Believe it or not, this isn't the first hockey stick accessory for the Wiimote -- the folks from
CTA naturally have you covered there as well -- but it is the first to be bundled with a game, and garner the glowing recommendation of Wayne Gretzky himself. The game in question here is EA's forthcoming
NHL Slapshot, which comes with the pint-sized hockey stick pictured above (just one, it seems) that holds both the Wiimote and nunchuck -- it also thankfully has a foam blade that
should prevent any
TV disasters. Just a gimmick, you say? Not according to Gretzky, who says that it's actually "very realistic" and "almost like playing in the NHL" -- yes, really. Interestingly, the game's creator also seems to have hinted at future versions for
Natal and
PlayStation Move, saying that the Wii version is "going to be a really good test." Look for it to be available on September 7th.
Almost like real hockey with a foam blade?
@Eli Haj Lol. Or they just used a real puck and are staring at the result.
@Eli Haj In any case Gretzky looks happy with the result. I think it's the girl's fault.
Check it out!
All Wireless!
Maybe it works with ***IMAGINATION***
@Eli Haj
The hockey sticks also double as wireless transmitters, they will also be able to be used with anything else. You can now attach your iPad to a printer using these wonderful hockey sticks.
@Eli Haj Or maybe Gretzky just finished the game on his own and the kids don't know what to say.
@Atkins Gretzky is happy because Nintendo just load his Ford pickup with cash.
Neat to see people so interested in a blank TV. No power cords, video cables or the like. NICE! Makes it feel so REAL! :P
I'll stick with Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey for N64
@macgregger NHL hitz was the sole reason I bought an xbox.
Aaaand another way to smash your huge LED screen.. keep those wii-cessories coming.
@gargle Ha, you didn't read thee whole article! Foam!
@Atkins they'll find a way.. they'll find a way..
@gargle True.. true..
YES!! Now I can accurately portray how my Flyers will actually choke in the Stanley Cup Finals!! It'll be like, I'm right there as Chicago crushes my championship dreams! :D
@LiveFromThe215
2-1 isn't bad with the horrendous one-sided refereeing. Hell, even the ass clown announces saw how bad the refs were. Still, were you this disillusioned when your Flyers were down three games to the Bruins? Keep the faith my friend. When Pronger is unleashed and allowed to hurt Toews and/or Hossa, the tables will turn. It would be nice if you had a decent third defensive pairing too. Krajicek and Bartulis were awful that game. Go Flyers! (From a St. Louis Blues fan)
So good you don't even have to plug anything in.
@grayskul
Yep, I was just going to comment on that. The kids have reasonable expressions on their faces, considering there's obviously nothing on the screen, but Wayne... He's just trying too hard to use his imagination.
@Kyzgar Maybe it's not his imagination, maybe he's seeing his own reflection... and that makes him happy...
I wonder what drug he was on when he thought that was almost like playing in the NHL . . . and can I have some?
@bolezhinkov What was he on? A pile of money.
I'll stick to Tony Hawk's "RIDE."
Oh, wait...
New Nintendo Wii: "Self-Powered + Wireless !!"
@Eli Haj you sir made me lol +1
"very realistic" and "almost like playing in the NHL"
No Wayne, no it isn't.
@Threlly
Hell if I got paid what he got paid to say that, I'd proclaim it to be the greatest thing since crack cocaine.
I really think i need to patient and start making my own plastic Wii hurling sticks (its an Irish sport) , as its about the only accessory the Wii does not have by now .
Umm... Engadget editors you are missing the real story here which is finally true wireless gear! What TV is that? It doesn't even need a wire for power, and is that the Wii HD? It's going wireless as well - scoop!
I'd love to see the video of the two kids throwing down their sticks and starting to beat the hell out of each other.
@Jaylittles531 Now THAT"s hockey!
These are a smack to the nuts just waiting to happen, good times for all!
I like how they are all staring with confusion because the TV wont turn on, they all must be Canadian (i kid).
So now we have wii-mote guitars, drums, steering wheels, inflatable karts, gun attachments, weight scales, bowling balls, boxing gloves and now hockey sticks. Whatever will come next?
wow, first the wings, then the kick ass gloves and now this hockey stick, what else??
Just when I thought CTA products couldn't possibly get any worse, they go and do something like this... and totally redeem themselves! I wish I was 12 again to play with this
Awesome to see him in an Oilers jersey. Hope this comes out on PS3 move.
What I want to know is..
Why an Oilers jersey? Why not LA
@tylersmyler
He was the captain on the Oilers dynasty team where he won four cups. Did he ever win a Cup in LaLa? No. You might as well ask why he's not wearing a Blues jersey.
Ah, the good ole' days of tearing up hotels playing ministicks at like 10pm, what was then the equivalent of 3am for a young boy.
Half the people will know exactly what I'm talking about, for the other half, playing hockey with the fake mini-plastic sticks (mini-sticks) is a staple of any young hockey player growing up.
these kids have obviously never heard of Don Cherry
Keep that stick on the ice!!
Look at the kids, they are having so much fun!
/s
It's clear that those kids aren't happy because they just got schooled by Wayne Gretzky. It's like real hockey, and Gretzky is better at hockey than them, so he ruined them.
They should have ordered extra cables from monoprice...
doh!
Great, kids with sticks near the new 3D HDTV... :-|
