Acer Stream preview at Computex 2010
We've seen Acer's Android 2.1-powered Stream a time or two before, but we couldn't resist the opportunity to give it a look ourselves here in Taipei. Acer's full gamut of smartphones were out on display, but this 3.7-inch monster was easily the standout. Build quality was remarkable, and the screen was downright luscious; viewing angles on the AMOLED panel were nothing short of incredible, and the haptic feedback was a nice touch, too. The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU handled the transitions within the OS with poise, and it actually felt a good bit lighter than some of the other touchscreen-based smartphones that we've played with recently. 'Course, we couldn't help but long for Froyo, but with a hardware set this powerful, we wouldn't be shocked to see it handed down shortly. Vid's after the break, vaquero.

meh...
@MSM
You serious? That's an awesome phone.
@Physicsguy89 Awesome is a word I seldom use. I don't mind hearing how the iPhone is/will be awesome, as I understand the draw. Evo, I'm with them too. This does not equal "awesome" IMHO. If this draws the top dollar for a phone I think there will be better alternatives offering more speed amongst other things. If this hits your niche and performs better at release then I wouldn't dispute the lust, but "awesome" deserves to be down-ranked more than "meh".
Things that can change this, better video recording (I've seen both the sd and HD video samples on youtube and compared to other phones) and faster UI. Both of these can happen, as there is still time, but I am surprised the attention Engadget has given it.
@Physicsguy89
Don't get me wrong, this device looks really good on paper, but I tried to play with a few android phones, they aren't my thing... thus justifying my "meh"
@MSM Hopefully this phone will be the beginning of acer's streak to android devices. http://j.mp/first-androidphone-from-acer
I'm glad many of these devices are coming out with processors and RAM that is sufficient enough to provide a smooth experience. I'll be glad to ditch my Qualcomm 7600 in favor of the Snapdragon, as a much-welcomed step up in performance.
Now if only Qualcomm could manage to provide decent video acceleration in their chipsets. My Touch Pro / Touch Pro 2 and even the HD2 all suffer from poor gaming performance, and it's really annoying.
make the screen at least 4" and I'll buy it
Can't help but wish the whole case was brushed metal.
@tobsmonster2
this gets me so often - there's some new sleek looking phone/tablet/whatever with a nice and shiny metal edge around the screen and i'm always expecting/hoping it to continue around the back, but it never does
Where's the LED light on the back?! Once again omitting the important things.
good to see HDMI becoming a standard on HD recording phones. Wonder what the God phone will have
It looks like the UI is a little slow at this time. I couldn't cope with that lag when moving between features/apps.
@Martin27
You couldn't "cope"? Get a grip man.
FYI, OLED should always have a 180 degree viewing angle, so it's not really remarkable. It would be remarkable if it *didn't*.
I'm already set on the Evil 4g but I'm impressed by the video capture of this preview using a compact camera.
Those square buttons at the bottom still look weird or tacked on...
@Impulses I'm with you on that. This would be awesome if it didn't have the physical buttons at the bottom. Still a beauty of a phone though. Am wondering if it is coming to AT&T? I'd still probably buy it though.
@Impulses That's for sure, I actually though it was in some kind of sleeve or something at first. What are the buttons at the bottom? It doesn't look totally finished.
I'm impressed with how every app swivels into view. If you'll notice, ,each app does a center revolve into the center of the screen. It's the little things that make the experience better.
I like the phone, a lot, but that OS looks a bit slow when opening apps, just a tad, something very odd having the high specs it has.
I suppose it'll get quicker with final release, or at least I hope so...
Seriously, the hands-on guy will need to know how to operate an Android phone. Stock OS won't typically do 360 degree rotation when turned, the guy who did the Moorestown Android hands-on also doesn't know how to operate an Android device!
This looks nice, but as an Incredible owner, I can't really get excited about it.
That said, why does the phone itself have to be so much larger than the actual display? You have a 3.7" display, but the phone's dimensions are much, much larger. What's all the excess bulk for? The part protruding on the bottom seems like it could go--I don't really understand what those three buttons are for.
@grumbles They're media controls. Play/pause, forward and back.
All the acer android phones I've seen look really dull and frumpy to me. It's just missing that extra little oomph needed to give it a more stylish appearance
A "3.7" monster"? That, my friend, is an oxymoron.
@Spiny Norman
Or maybe just a moron..
Dolby Mobile...good audio quality for a change ?
I like the design (except for the odd multimedia buttons) but that UI is pretty crazy. doesn't seem as user-friendly as Sense but for a power user this could be pretty cool.
btw, how the hell do you use the notification bar if its smack in the middle of the home screen/on the bottom of apps??
I don't think this guy has ever used an Android phone before.
slap windows phone 7 OS on it and i'll buy :p
mainly cause I WANT ZUNE !!!! :p
