Alienware M11x gets overseas Core i3 / i5 / i7 and NVIDIA Optimus bumps (update: US too)
We've been hearing about an impending CPU update to Alienware's M11x for some time now, and now Dell Malaysia has quietly updated its website with options to order the revised not-quite-netbook. So what's new? Well, there's NVIDIA Optimus for starters, and the Intel Core 2 Duo processor has been thanked for its time and shown the door in lieu of Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs on a QS57 chipset. Prices start at RM 3,699, or about $1,110 in US bills. Speaking of which, while Dell's US site has yet to update, we've seen what's purported to be some internal documentation that pinpoints the official stateside launch for the revised M11x as tomorrow (technically, it's already Tuesday in Malaysia). No confirmation yet, but hey, it'd make for a pretty nice pre-E3 gift.

Update: UK Alienware lovers can now also get their Core i5/i7 M11x fix, as the new hardware options have gone live on the laptop's local microsite. Yes, Optimus is there too. [Thanks, Mike]
Update 2: And now it's live in the US with prices starting at $949 with a Core i5 520UM. Less if you're thinking Core 2 Duo, which you're not. [Thanks, MastrCake]

If you seen one of these in person you would be dissapointed, I was. I was wanting one of these when they were first talked about until I saw Its just slightly bigger than a netbook youll be hard pressed to do any real gaming on it. I would rather have a Asus G73 or the coming G53 stealth models with DX11 graphics option in the mobile ATI 5870. Still I think Alienware is very cool and draws attention everywhere you take one.
@Soldier1969
Its funny you should mention the size, because that is what is being advertised and is why most people are interested in it. And for things like Left for Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2, it scored very well for what it is, and I believe most people would consider those "real games".
@axendo79
Apparently all "real" games came out in the last 10 months.
@Soldier1969 Not true! I played battlefield ba company 2 on the older c2d version at PAX east this year, an was stunned with how well it performed. And this was on a larger external monitor. This new version should be absolutely killer.
more overpriced dell computers
@Ops
Overpriced? how is this even expensive for what you're getting?????
Wow, okay.. I didn't mean that as maliciously as you all apparently think I did.
I read his comment, chuckled at his engrish, and then made my comment; I certainly don't think I'm worthy of anybody's hate.
I think I'll wait until it hits Best Buy in a standard config, unless they only get the i3 model. I definitely want the i5 model, but can't really see a tremendous benefit to the i7 except extra clock speed. vOv
Not to mention the i3 chip has a lot of things "missing" that the i5 and i7 have, like Turbo Boost (might be moot if they "overclock" the i3 like they did with the original chip).

@pbdye
This was my thought as well, until a co-worker wisely stated, the Core i7 would be perfect for making this 11" notebook powerful enough to be a desktop replacement. Definitely peaked my interest to think of being able to carry my full computer anywhere I go -- not just a pieces from it.
@Broderbund
Don't be a douche. Get your head out of your ass. Realize not everyone can speak/write well.
@Broderbund
Your misjudgment of how ignorant the comment came off doesn't exactly patch that you sound like a wanker. A clear apology and acceptance of your mistake might help, though.
For 0.8 lbs more, ENVY 15 blows this thing away.
@gordonyz
Except I actually *want* it because it's 11.6", not really for the weight.
I just wish Asus would make something just as solid with the same specs that didn't have that "OH GOD STEAL ME" alien logo on it.
@gordonyz
Although, I am pretty sure the 335M is faster than the mobility 5830 which is the only option on the envy 15.
@BoxBabaX
Get your facts dude. Even the 5650M ( which will come with ENVY 14 ) is a bit bettere than GT335, leave alone 5830M.
@sabby
better*
Damn Engadget, when will you enable editing ? :(
Dell, take all my money
This is a phenomenal notebook, for the price. I love my m11x, now. It plays the vast majority of today's games... the only one it couldn't cut was BFBC2, and that's because I need a high frame rate to be competitive in multiplayer.
The keyboard is excellent, all those lights can be turned off, and I got it loaded with a four year warranty for just over $1,000.
I apologize for nothing because I didn't do anything wrong, you all need to get off of your incredibly high horses.
Why don't you all write the owners of www.engrish.com a letter complaining about how insensitive and ignorant their website is, or every stand up comedian ever for making a racial joke? Fucking grow up.
@Broderbund
Fuck the gadgets y'all we've got some social situations to tackle!
@Broderbund Wow, taking it personal now. I think these guys get paid to be funny, particularly the comedians, and most of us go to the shows (maybe website, I've never heard of it) with this and relaxes standards in mind.
As they say, there's a time and a place for everything. I think you picked the wrong both, but mostly the wrong place.
@Broderbund Wow, you think everyone who reads Engadget speaks perfect English? That says more about you that about angelusp... douche.
i really like this laptop but is there anything similar with an optical drive, same sort of price? maybe with a normal housing, no lights and other crap?
@Mouniface but the keyboard lights are all good
does this mean that any of the current alienware will get cheaper? I'm in the market for a gaming laptop, and there so damn expensive!!!
the i5 and i7 m11x are up for the US now.
What do you guys recommend , i5 for the price or i7 for the performance. gonna buy this baby soon
@Broderbund
Lol @ the troll backpedal, followed by "I apologize for nothing"
...smooth.
Yay! I've been saving since the first generation came out and just ordered myself an i7.
I am going to college this fall semester and I would really like a laptop. This thing seems to be the perfect set up for mobility and power under a really small hood. I just have to ask all of you guys, if you had $1500 bucks on a laptop to spend, m11x or Asus N82jq? The N82jQ is only a slight amount bigger, probably about the same in battery life, but has a 14 inch screen versus 11.6 in. I will be majoring in Mechanical engineering, and I use heavy demanding programs regularly. Mass Effect 2 included.
@Justuseless I'm in the same boat as you, except knock it down to about $1k. That probably puts the Asus out of the question. But, does the Asus have Optimus? If not, it probably gets worse battery life by a significant amount (unless you spend all your time gaming).
@Justuseless Some that's probably more important for you to consider is how often are you going to bring your laptop around. Even if slightly bigger was the case, I'd still go with the M11x. You will appreciate its size and portability as college goes on. The performance is only slightly different I'd say when comparing. Also, since you are a student you also get a price discount from Dell on the m11x. The extra 100 dollars (or percentage discount or whatever), is sure enough to allow you to make it a core i7 or something else. Make sure you check out Dell University when you are buying a laptop.
@FallenArms3 Yeah, it has Optimus, it's the same GPU.
@Adeezy THANK YOU for mentioning that student discount! That throws the m11x back down under 1k for me. Sweet.
So I'm thinking about buying this. When do we get a review?
REVIEW, REVIEW!!!!!!
