Notion Ink Adam 'on track' for Q3 after all, may have 'more aggressive price'
Thought the Notion Ink Adam was delayed yet again? So did we, but founder Rohan Shravan just cleared up all that nonsense with a new update. If you've been pining for a Pixel Qi screen, you'll be happy to know the Tegra 2 tablet is still on track for Q3, and will be joined by a cheaper LCD version around the same period. Celebrating his good fortune at securing investment, Shravan teased lower prices and a third, more battery efficient Notion Ink as well, but on this last point even he agrees he might be getting ahead of himself. Honestly, at this point we'd be happy to see even a single retail unit -- we're already getting distracted by alternatives.
Updated: We just heard from Rohan again and he tells us that the Adam will likely run Froyo. Instead of Google's Market for apps, Notion Ink has its own content and application store called Genesis. We pressed him for more exact timing and pricing, but apparently our charming personalities couldn't get him to give up anymore at the moment.

I like the "more aggressive price" part
@f2000372 *cough*less than the ipad*cough*
@f2000372
Yup, but "may have" is not good enough... If they want to make it, they "will have"... And they should throw in a "very" in front of agressive.
@f2000372 I agree, the more aggressive the better.
@The ***cough with flash*** memory slot.....but wait there's more.
@The Geek
I did the math (from the blog in Notion Ink's Site)....
100K Units/month = $350M/year revenue.
So the price will be close to $300 ......
@f2000372
Sounds like their margin will be close to nil which makes the future sound not so good.
@f2000372 I like the Pixel Qi part
@madmanmostafa Windows 7 tablet! what where?
Could be yummy. At 11mm thick and cheaper, the non-Pixel Qi unit could be very compelling...all depends on how the UI is done, of course.
@CRA1G
I have faith - watching this guy doing interviews he is very confidant in a real world way that he has a good product here and the means to get it to market. this won't be some joojoo disaster.
@madmanmostafa
I see a downrank in your future...
Bring on the competition, and please dont vanish
@AlienSix
I bet it will be priced $699.
Email me when im right, because you owe me $10.
matt.s@live.ca
@Technologeee
Well considering i didnt bet you anything, I dont owe you anything
Alternatives indeed. The first few of these to market are likely going to be the winners. This 3rd and 4th qtr junk is a mistake.
aggressive price? $300~ please
@ComeShot In his blog he states that he expects 100k devices/month and a revenue of 350 million dollar in the first year.
That would be an average of $292/unit?
It sure is on the low side, but I hope it's true.
@ComeShot
yes Notion Ink already mentioned the price range $300~800 long long ago
so be even back in the period $300 was promised to be the starting price
now i can even get cheaper as they're looking at an alternative hardware choice for a more competitive price
but I mean, I'll rather spend more to enjoy the full freedom with this dream device
all im worried about are the accessories such as the dock, carrying case and even stylus
@MaTdg
Let's hope it's not true if that's the revenue total after manufacturing costs...
Current specs say: "Over 140 hours audio and over 16 hours of HD video playback"
And now there's a more battery efficient version? Eat that x86 platform!
@MaTdg
Can't argue with that.
Did Engadget disable the comments or something?
@BrookLynnsFinest
On topic though I agree about the "alternatives"
That other Pixel Qi tablet look mighty impressive (although a lil similar in terms of design).
Hopefully though one of these 2 can come to market and not fail like the JooJoo.
@BrookLynnsFinest
"Did Engadget disable the comments or something?"
But... you had to leave a comment to say this!?
its a shame nvidia can't be trusted to get a chip out on time. how long have we been waiting for a tegra powered phone? pretty sure i was waiting to buy one last year lol
that said, i have super high hopes for this and sincerely wish this provides some great competition!
Tablet is a total niche product. People are sucker for niche product. Tablet viewing angle is horrible, you have to hold it with one hand and adjust the viewing angle constantly. The screen get more blurry with each swipe than Mr. Blurry Cam. Mouse over state for tablet is mostly broken and non existence. Typing is horrible and slow (not to mention if you were to use 2 hand typing then you have no support for the angle viewing and get hand cramp). Need I say more?
@cdf74dc9 "Need I say more?"
Please don't. Troll, and downrank :p
Mary Lou Jephsen already demoed a wide viewing angle 3Qi display @ Computex this year. There are oleophobic coatings. Thumb keyboards. Checkmate.
@techee44
Since when is commenting on a product became troll. Your comment is more trolling than an armored troll. Not exceeding even 10 words.
@PacoBell
Yea, so is my LCD display but it's always best to view it head-on.
Shraven's update did nothing to clear up the confusion. "On track" is about as vague as you can get. If the Adam isn't delayed, then why not specify a date?
As much as I want this thing to come out, that update does nothing to inspire me and certainly doesn't refer to any specific Q3 launch date.
Will this tablet have a kickstand?
@Crusader Rabbit No, it doesn't have a kickstand. Not a huge letdown since all kickstands I've seen so far for tablets aren't that great.
I honestly can't wait till this tablet comes out. I may actually purchase this thing when it's released.
Really anctious to see this sell in stores. This will be a very good competitor to iPad (if it's as good as they say it will be). I bet the next iPad will be some a lot better, otherwise it will become irrelevant :)
@madmanmostafa
"may have 'more aggressive price"
In other words, the device is gonna be expensive as hell, and we arent going to like it.
Come on now Engadget, be honest!
For me, waiting for this is the hardest part.
They promised sub $300, could it get more aggressive than that? But I'll pay $500 for a pixel qi screen and the entire Internet, just release it! (But don't release it if it's super slow or super buggy)
@zangetsu2 If 'the entire internet' means flash then they don't have to release it at all because flash i what makes it slow and buggy.
Check out this comparison with flash on froyo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtGCaKyd_co
Awesome. I too hope it is around $300 price range. Anyone know if it will have an internal hdd or just a small amount of rom for the OS and the rest will be SD card expansion? I saw the spec sheet a while back but I forget.
"we have evaluated another platform, which is proving to be extremely efficient on battery and much cheaper as well" so the Tegra2 might not have been the right way to go after all... (could it be Moorestown?)
In related news Irex Technologies, a small eink company, filed for bankruptcy recently. With the amount of delays that Notion Ink has had I will be expecting similar news from them in early 2011.
I find the fact that the release of this product is so close yet they (1) haven't shown anything new with it since January (there was big talk of their custom UI) and (2) components for the device still aren't even in production (Pixel Qi / Tegra 2) let alone the actual tablet, very troubling. This company is starting to seem like a fast talking snake oil salesman.
@budice4ever
An unheard of start-up based out of Hyderabad, India, without a proper corporate structure and a CEO in his mid-twenties who happens to have just six months of experience in a real company (Schlumberger). Now what could possibly go wrong?

@jmaine umm.. Microsoft was started in a garage when Bill and Steve were "jolly-good" friends. I bet people said the same thing about them when they came up with their first offerings... But future generations tend to learn from history, you somehow, lost the plot!!
@Winggie
They did software and at a time when there was basically no competition.
There is light years worth of difference here.
if it can come in at around $300 it will be really hard for any other tablet to compete
@hated one
if the price is $200 cheaper than apple as can preform as promised than says it pay trump the ipad. a lot of people were hesitant that name the ipad the best tablet mainly because a lot of people feel apple left a lot of things out and was a major improvement over the ipod touch. again this all depends on whether the adam is as promised but from whats been said the adam might be what the ipad was suppose to be. i just hope it can deliver on it's promises
OK, I know commenting on the quality of a display through another display is fairly pointless (like watching a commercial for HD on an SDTV), but every pic I've seen of this thing makes the screen look pretty terrible. Which confuses me, because not only have Engadget been praising it, but they've also been saying it's a photographer's dream. It just seems like color saturation and contrast are just very sub-par. Of course, I'm hoping I'm wrong, because this tablet sounds awesome on paper. Is it just me? Should I stop worryin?
@Levi Are you referring to the standard video or the high contrast video on the Adam? The high contrast video mode is washed out, it's nearly grey-scale. That's so it can be read in sunlight. The standard video is supposed to be very crisp with full color saturization.
@jsevans
Perhaps all of the shots have been taken while the devices are in the battery saving/sunlight viewing modes, and that's why they all look washed up to me. I hope it turns out nice
