HTC has fix in the works for EVO 4G screen sensitivity; separation problems are minor
We've just been tipped off on a couple feel-good items for EVO 4G owners that should end your Friday on a bright note:
- The glass separation issues are real, but said to be super minor and have no effect on the usability of the phone apart from a nearly imperceptible "give" to the touch. That said, HTC has made some assembly changes that should reduce or eliminate the problem going forward, and it'll keep an eye on the situation.
- This is really interesting: the screen sensitivity problems are also real and are apparently far more prevalent in arid climates, but it can be fixed with a software patch alone. That patch will be rolling out to EVOs soon.

this is the best news ever since Evo came out!!! And the incredible too. Well most of the last wave of HTC's models??
@GetDange
Speaking of software updates... When will engadget update so that I can "multitask". In other words, I want to leave the app, check something, and then comment/own somebody. I know it's irrelevant by I want to multitask!!!!
@GetDange
I hope this doesnt happen to the iPhone 4, I think the plastic surrounding the glass (not talking about the stainless steel rim) looks weak and it looks like if it is dropped very delicately the blass may pop out
@uckApple i doubt the iPhone will have such problems ... Apple's build quality s top-notch !
@AnAnt
Well when your iphone gets a 4G connection, 4.3" screen, and an 8mp camera maybe it will be able to compete with the Evo. Heck the device is struggling to catch up with android in general, imagine when the Evo gets froyo?! Ha your iphone will truly be a POS when that happens in July =]
@uckApple
Let's face it. If you drop just about anything, it's gonna have some kind of mark. I've never dropped my 3Gs in 7 months and I don't plan on dropping my iPhone 4. In the even that I do, I'm probably gonna splurge on the rediculously expensive bumper, but without a case? It's apple guys. Say what you want about software and OS faults and specs, but their build quality does not fail to impress
@Wjackson25
False. Average consumer has no idea about 4G. Ask my parents and just about EVERY single one of my friends. No one knows about the evo! I'm not saying that's the phones fault. Say what you want about apple but they get their pretty little under-powered products to the people. That's something you have to accept.
@Wjackson25 .. Have to disagree.
* 4G - Fine if you are in the US. Completely irrelevant if you are not.
* 4.3 inch - And my laptop has a 17inch screen. I and many other don't want a bigger phone. This isn't the 90's.
* 8mp - Completely irrelevant. The sensor quality is much, much more important than number of megapixels.
@AnAnt
Huh? Doesn't get me wrong, I love my iPhone. But the one currently in my hand is the 6th one I've owned in 3yrs (owned a 2G when they first came out, only to be replaced once do to personal/ upgrade reasons. Their iPhone build quality isn't what you make it out to be.
As for the dude that wants to compare the Evo 4G to any iPhone, STFU. Seriously. One phone is for the masses, one is for bleeding edge phone geeks. Which phone is best is 100% personal preference so stop arguing now.
As for the original poster, what's up with your comment? Trying to be 'first' with whatever filtered through your brain coherently? Greatest news ever since the announcement.... makes me think you figured HTC planned for it to go wrong before it hit the shelves and this announcement is "proof" they are a consumer orientated company who's objective is to make the consumer happy. If that's your belief, you're no smarter than an "Apple fanboy". They are out to make their investors happy and that's the bottom line.
@taligent
Well put! That's exactly right! I like the giant screen, but I prefer my iPhones. It's perfect. I suppose 4 wouldn't be bad, like the droid incredible.
@taligent Sure, the sensors are important, and the low-light sensor on the iphone is gonna help it deliver good 5MP photos. But to say they matter more than MP's? BS. If you drank that kool-aid steve jobs spat out during the announcment you need help. Frankly, 5MP on a high-end smartphone nowadays is embarrassing. The camera has always played second fiddle for Apple and it probably always will.
@GetDange
agreed. this is great news. in fact, after reading the engadget article about the screen sensitivity issue, I tried it out on my Evo and sadly it had this problem. I thought it was a hardware problem since the video engadget showed said their "replacement" droid incredibles had the same problem. I assumed my Evo then had a hardware defect. It's a minor issue since it only occurs when I'm not holding the Evo which is rarely.
So I went to a local sprint corporate store here in Boston and put in a work order to get a new Evo to replace my defunct one. Only problem was that other people already had orders in and hadn't received their Evos yet. I became #27 on the list(!) to get my Evo replaced which Bob said should be sometime next week. Thanks Bob!
Hopefully HTC gets this rolled out within a week and I can test out the software upgrade to see if this really "fixes" the problem. It'll save me having to re-setup my phone, although there are some decent backup apps on the android market.
Get this out now HTC! I'm waiting for it!
@Btbessey Well, I think that's mostly because they get free publicity from the likes of Cnet, PCWorld, Engadget and others. Not saying that's a bad thing, but if these sources would actually give air time to other manufactures besides Apple, it would do us all justice. That's my opinion.
@AnAnt
These sounds just like the eponymous famous last words
@Wordlet the megapixel myth is not Apple kool-aid. It's professional wisdom that all but the most ignorant consumers have known for years. Your ignorance to this fact really puts it in perspective when people like you claim everyone who likes Apple just aren't aware of the technological prowess of the latest crapdroid phone.
I'm sorry, without an OFFICIAL statement from HTC this is all rumor. Engadget took information from an anonymous "tipster" regarding Qik video chat requiring a monthly fee. That turned out not true. I believe some people are attempting to make this a bigger issue than it is. In fact, it is not an issue. An issue being real and "super minor" is a contradiction.

I'm happy for the Evo 4G. Atleast HTC responds by saying they'll look into things rather than keep mum about it (Apple, AT&T and security issues). The ground issues can be resolved by a software update? That I have to see. The only thing why I haven't really considerd evo to be on top of my next phone list is that my current phone already drains when I switch the 3G on (which still gets me through the day without charging) but I want it to last a little longer such that when I wake up, my phone is still barely on standby (that I get from switching the 3G off). Now, I don't want to have a major feature which I should turn off just to get me running through the whole day (which I don't necessarily need by the way). But that's just me. I hope they also resolve the framerate issues which is no biggie but could make itself better.
@BryCivicSi
The EVO is for the phone geeks? Don't make me laugh. It is just another product cranked out of HTC's design department that will be quickly abandoned for a new model.
Please, stop flattering yourself.
@Btbessey, actually not true, for past six months Sprint have blanketed the airways, radio, online a print with 4G advertising. The Overdrive has been selling like hotcakes.
@Android looks Hacked Together
so your saying you would rather have a camera with less mega pixels? That just sounds dumb to me. And the Evo is not actually that much bigger than the iPhone yeah? Its just HTC decided to use the whole front of the device istead of leaving two "irrelevant" huge black bands on the top and bottom....
@Btbessey
i'm not talking about the average consumer. I live in Boston, and 4G is great for me. Thats why i got this and not the iphone. I never mentioned why other people would get this phone. Just me.
Please learn to read. Thanks.
@Btbessey That may be true but most ppl don't kno what 3g is so u can't say that cuz no one knows about 4g there not gonna buy the evo and since android is open source Theres a huge chance that it won't lose the more there is of one thing there's a bigger chance of ppl buying it unlike the iPhone which is one company one carrier and one phone apple should atleast make a cheaper version of the iPhone
@taligent Well the 4g yea that's true but it won't be in 2 3 years the screen that's true but only to an extent cuz if it was true then y would ppl buy a 17" laptop rather than a 15" one? And the cam is the only thing I can fully agree with u 100% but just like u said ppl don't want such a big screen phoned well maybe a lot of ppl would like to have high quality pics
@Wjackson25 wow I love android to o but you really just made yourself look ignorant as hell. Have you been on another planet the last week? The iphone had blowing past their own pre order records they set with previous models. You can't find an iphone pre order anywhere. They are certainly not playing catch up to anyone but RIM and they aren't even in the same class. Do some research next time do you don't make all android fans look stupid and give anymore ammunition to iphone fan boys. Just sayin
@Android looks Hacked Together no only idiots make a name like you got and troll engadget articles about android on a friday night.
@Android looks Hacked Together You're a F'n moron to think that WiMax is not 4G and to think that LTE, which isn't even on the market yet, is the only technology that is.
Look how jealous you are of Android. Having to make all sorts of negative comments on every Android artical. If you really thought Android looked "hacked [all] together" then you would just let it be and die out because if it really did suck then that's what would happen. Well guess what. it's not dying and justs keeps growing and getting better at a faster rate than any other OS.
Android FTW sucker.
@toyotatundra
You are not very smart when it comes to marketing in the real world are you? You think because apple gets some publicity from tech nerd sites like engadget and Cnet is why it is so much popular?
Go back to college and take a marketing class. They get their product out to the masses because it appeals to the masses. They have commercials that appeal to everyone. They changed the smartphone world from just being business people with email devices to making it appealing to every one from business people to bus drivers and 5 year olds to 95 years olds. That is why it sells so much better than every other phone on the market.
Every first year business major in the world could tell you that it is not about having the best product, it is about making that product appeal to the majority!
@uckApple I thought it was all glass on the back and front....
@taligent Yeah, because Apple has always had top-notch quality sensors in their cameras... Oh wait...
@Wjackson25
No wonder you got down-ranked into oblivion. You are one of those arrogant fanboys. PS. Over half a million pre orders on the day (of pre ordering) sounds much better than 150,000 EVOs SOLD on the first day!!!
@Btbessey
Yea of course, the iphoney has been out 3 yrs compare to the evos 3 weeks.
Tell that to my 3G who's has been babies since day one with proper charge protocalls who needs to be juiced every 3 hours and is struggling with 4.0 like a child born to a crack whore
@AnAnt They are all made in China.
@Wjackson25
that cheap EVO of yours won't even hold itself together until then. Let's be honest. You only bought that cheap phone because of the specs wich doesn't mean anything when your phone falls apart. LMFAO!!
@Android looks Hacked Together
I see idiots everyday and they're all around me.
@Dkgreen84
the ones i have seen have not fell apart... plus they get a reliable and fast data connection.
@Wjackson25 Let's hope so, apple needs some actual competition.
@AnAnt Actually I had the glass separate from the corner of my iPhone 2G. It wasn't fully adhered when I got it, and over time it worsened. The wake/sleep button slowly quit too. Along with the 17" unibody macbook pro that needed the CPU and motherboard replaced after a few months, my only two Apple products have both been lemons. Even if they truly are top notch, its still a notch too low in my experience.
@Btbessey
Are you new to android? Just hold down your home key after you exit the app. Whala multitasking
@Wjackson25 I agree with you. Cheap, plastic, security issues. And no flash make Johnny a dull boy.
@Wjackson25 Actually, cameras with lower pixel counts for a given sensor size have better high ISO (read: low-light) performance.
@Wjackson25 I prefer Android and HTC (or motorola) over Apple and iOS ANYDAY. I seriously hate Apple and Blow Jobs
It shouldn't of had these problems in the first place.
Ahh shut up. Its a new product, and the issues are getting fixed @ the speed of light...... if u had a Sprint Hero u would understand that this is a massive improvement in response time from HTC
EVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@CJisohsocool
What ComboBreaker said....Shut up. Seriously, just shut up.
The bad ass phone known as the Evo had some first-run production problems, much like MANY pieces of tech do, and now they're being fixed.
@CJisohsocool
LOL wow shows what a noobie you are to tech, LOL. Have known about the assembly line fixes for the past 24 hours but ya know, working for the company I don't tattle stuff that I'm not authorized to but its good that this is out now...seriously, the 250 people on our wait list for this phone will be getting this product revamp in hardware and is the reason why this week is sans EVO shipments...they will continue next week after the adjustments.
@TheNexxuvas
*apologizes in advance* S. Jobs laughs at your 250 person strong wait list. *apologizes again* ......I just had to be THAT guy.
@CJisohsocool
Because EVERY first gen product is perfect...
@Waltah
The product has been out since early June, this is not a pre-order. Way to compare apples to oranges.
