Well, none of this will come as a big surprise here, but it's always nice to hear it straight from an official source. Microsoft has confirmed that a $199 version of
new Xbox 360 will be coming in the fall to
replace the now-$149 Arcade, which is no longer in production. In addition, the company's also spilled a few more beans --
Kinect will be available as a bundle with the new Xbox 360, and though there isn't any official pricing information on that one just yet, we've seen some telltale evidence on that front which would lead us to believe it'll run somewhere in the neighborhood of
$399 for an Elite and $299 for the Arcade. So now you know.
Wait, so should I get $100 back from GameStop since I bought mine for $299 ($326.xx after taxes)?
@BrentSchmidt The $199 is the price of the 360 Arcade, which has no hard drive. If you paid $326 for a 360 with a 120GB hard drive (previous form factor) or for a 360 with a 250GB hard drive (new form factor), then you haven't been ripped off.
This story makes no sense. The current "new" 360 is going for $299 everywhere so wtf is this story about
@Biopsidy The current "new" 250GB model is $299. Later this year, once stocks of the old models are depleted, they will release another version of the new model with a smaller or possibly no hard drive at the arcade's $199 price.
They will also offer both the 250GB and smaller model with a Kinect camera bundled in for $100 more each, making them $399 and $299 respectively. Is that so hard to understand?
@KeegdnaB
Did you miss the posts about when the article was originally posted, NO MENTION of it replacing the Arcade was written? It was clarified later.
Quote from source
"Q: Will you sell a $199 version of the new Xbox 360?
A: We will offer a $199 Xbox 360 this fall."
So, its not the new Xbox 360 that was announced, its one version of it, that will be cheaper. i.e. smaller hard drive and what not, I guess.
I think this is a confusing post. The $199 is the replacement for the current Arcade. The current Arcade is the one without a hard drive. MS said they'd start selling a "slim" version to replace this arcade when current stock runs out. The question here is if the slim "Arcade" replacment will again be without a HD.
Above that is what's on the shelves now, the replacement for the Elite that comes with the 250GB HD. It's currently $299.
And when Kinect is released, there will be bundles that include Kinect.
The way this post is written sounds like the box that's on shelves now will be $199, which just isn't true.
Is this the Arcade version? Because the new one just released is $300.
@Stephanie C
Thanks for fixing the post!
They are talking about a new arcade version of the Xbox. Mostly likely minus the Wi Fi and a smaller hard drive.
Is this Rite!!??? $199!! Holy Shit!!
$200 WTF?!?!?!??!?!
Does the Kinect come with the xbox?
Most likely they are talking about the new Xbox 360 Arcade console. As it is now known that Microsoft is replacing the old arcade. They probably just forgot to mention this bit of information in the article.
I thought this thing was 299... people have been paying that.
I'm apparently not following... as mikmik111 asked, what is $199? GameStop has them listed on their website and a local one has them in stock at $299. The article isn't clear if this is an Arcade equivalent model, or what it is. It sounds as if they're saying the 250gb model we've seen is $199.
Read the damn article you morons. It clearly states "Microsoft has confirmed that a $199 version of new Xbox 360 will be coming in the fall to replace the now-$149 Arcade"
@CJisohsocool
That was just added. It wasn't there before.
@CJisohsocool lol i know, didn't confuse me :s
@CJisohsocool Yeah. Came back to see the confusion in the comments and see they have corrected it. IMO they should have added an "updated" tag and to apologize for confusion from original article.
the award for most confusing post.... lol
Okay Microsoft if you make it $199 and include a 120 GB HDD I'm in. If you start up with that bullshit no HDD nonsense, and make it an extra $150 or whatever than I'll just pass. Nothing wrong with my original Xbox 360 with the a 120GB HDD but that new design will fit a lot better with my black components. Please don't disappoint us.
@Slvrgun
You might get a 20GB, but no way are you getting 120GB.
@Slvrgun The whole point of the core Xbox 360 is to have a SKU that is as cheap as possible through which you can upsell optional accessories. If they are smart they won't even include wi-fi in the arcade unit and continue to sell the wi-fi adapters that everyone seems willing to buy.The wi-fi included in the new 360 is only plugged into an internal USB port so it would be very easy for MS to remove wi-fi from the barebones SKU.
If I was them I would have no HDD, wi-fi, or headset, but I would include a small USB thumb drive of about 4GB or 8GB. That gives them a lot of room to price drop the system next year.
@cool8man Wasn't there just an article where some MS guy implied all upcoming units would have a HDD?
Terribly written title/article.
People are really this stupid? If this article seems confusing to you, you most likely lack the IQ to operate the console.
@scots79 They came back and edited this article after it was posted for awhile. The original article was just badly/confusingly written. This is explained in the commentsby some people as well.
Since I sold my previous 360 for being a vacuum cleaner and having a power brick (among other reasons), I might take advantage of this bundle. That if Kinect has at least 1 game I can be interested in...
@MegaJapan
The new 360 still has a power brick unfortunately. Look at Engadget's unboxing.
It would be nice if the new 250 GB box does so well that by xmas they can drop it to $250.
Drop the hdd to 120 GB and sell it for the $199.
Create the Kinect bundles with those.
Two days ago at Traget I paid $80 for an xbox arcade
if I ALSO bought a $50 store gift card. =$134 with tax.
Plugged in a 2GB usb thumb dive in the back, so I can download demos/videos.
Got 30day free trial to Live-gold.
@tonyp12 Just bough the Xbox 360 s (glossy) lol. 299. Don't need a USB drive but have several extras. Has built in wifi so no $100 extra adapter charge. And won't have to delete videos when I finish watchin them. I sold my old xbox or 150 and my original for 50. Only $99 upgrade for me
I already have a 360 (literally on my 5th one due to issues with EVERY SINGLE ONE) so I'll be getting the Kinect attachment as a standalone for $150. My three year old is going to love it.....and yes, that's exactly how I'm justifying it. Ha!
Will the $199 version have built-in wifi?
@Paul Ryan
Everyone wants to know this but no news yet.
@Paul Ryan I'm betting it won't. The wi-fi in the new Xbox 360 is only attached by an internal USB. It would be very easy to remove wi-fi without disrupting or complicating the manufacturing process. Very smart design decision. I'm betting they won't include it.
@cool8man
It could be designed that way simply because it was more costly a change to add it onto the chipset.
Just keep the built in wifi when releasing the cheaper xbox.
If they don't include a HDD in the 200 dollar xbox, big deal, as long as it has built in wifi I'm alright. I have a program for my mac that lets me stream all my stuff to the xbox 360. Tried it on my current one, it works like a charm. Plus I will just save my games on my 16gb usb flash drive.
Whats wrong with you people, this crap is outdated by 5 years. Get a real gaming platform the high end PC. Unbelievable Microsoft is milking this garbage over and over every year. Paint a turd shiny black its still a turd!!! You think gaming at 720p is as good as it gets your soley mistaken. Try 2560 x 1600 res thats 1600p for you that think 1080 is as good as it gets...oh and get a new shirt while your at it!
After reading all the comments posting, there is one thing no one seems to have noticed or mentioned from the original article. It clearly states that the new 360 version coming out to replace the "arcade version" will cost $199... now bear in mind that the arcade version is currently priced around $150. So that means the newer version will cost about $50 MORE!!! What does that tell you?? It tells me that there will be something OTHER THAN the newer slimmer body included with this version. It would not make any sense to charge $50 more just for an updated body. So what ever the arcade DID NOT HAVE... this newer version would have to have it built-in to justify the PRICE INCREASE, right?
I can't really speculate on what it will come with standard, since I have never owned, nor even played with the Xbox 360 before... I'm a PC Gamer...
@SBMfromLA The arcades quietly dropped to $150 from $200 so they could move the old ones out of stock and make room for the new ones. They only recently dropped the prices on both old models by $50. And by recently I mean June 15. In other words: The day after their E3 conference.
Sooo kinect alone $150, kinect w/ cosole bundle $299...way to scare off ur existing hardcore fan base. Loving my ps3 more & more everyday
You know what's sad? Microsoft is currently selling a console SKU that's the same price as Kinect. With or without a software pack in, that price point is a fucking joke.
@kenny goo
¿And you know what's a joke? people saying kinect will cost 150$, when Microsoft hasn't released the price yet.
We DON'T KNOW how much Kinect will cost. Not yet.
@Hamaki
You know what's pathetic? People not believing Kinect will cost $150 when EVERY MAJOR RETAILER is listing it at that price. This is the same shit that happened with DJ Hero and Tony Hawk Ride last year. Activision wouldn't announce the $120 price point even though every retailer was saying it was true, then they finally come out with it right before the games launched.
When it comes to release dates, you should never trust retailers with any type of certainty, since they're almost always placeholder dates, but prices usually aren't. If there's a consensus among retailers, it's safe to say that's what the price is going to be. It's rare that that's not the case.
What would be really nice is if Microsoft would decide to give those of us that already bought the new console a $50 discount on Kinect when it releases...
you bet your ass i am getting one
Prediction: ~80GB drive and no wi-fi
