Jolicloud 1.0 demonstrated on Acer Aspire One 533, coming to your netbook soon
We're always skeptical when it comes to underground operating systems whipped up for one specific purpose, but Jolicloud has managed to continually impress us with each passing build. Now, at long last, the netbook-centric OS has arrived at the magical 1.0, and our comrades over at Netbook News have managed to score an early copy. Better still, they're showcasing it on Acer's just-released Aspire One 533, and if the bootup speed is any indication, we'd say the two are a match made in heaven. The 1.0 version sure looks grown-up compared to those earlier builds, and while we suspect it would take a bit of getting used to before we really found ourselves comfortable in an app-driven desktop OS, we definitely like the looks of it. Feel free to hop on past the break for a lengthy video demonstration of the refaced system, and if you're currently using an earlier version, the company has informed the world that upgrades will start slipping out as early as this week.

Looks awesome!
Now to make it run on the Nexus :D
@geniusdog254 This? On a nexus? Seen how tiny those tray icons are? You'd never manage to get it connected to a wireless. :/
@geniusdog254 I've always wondered, on these OSes that are mouse-centric, how does one control the mouse when it's ported on a phone? If the mouse goes where your finger goes, it would be horribly inaccurate and frustrating, right?
@The Madman Thats true I suppose, but if we can get Ubuntu we can get this.
@kitface You actually don't have a mouse in the traditional sense on the Nexus Ubuntu builds. Wherever you tap, you click, but there is no cursor
@kitface I believe they invented the trackball/optical pad for that.
@Auouywonz - Stole the words right out of my mouth. Looks neat.
@geniusdog254 it's not multi-touch oriented like Android, you know? Correct me if I'm wrong.
@geniusdog254
how would you get a cursor to open menus? I would just do something like Touchpad Pro for iPhone. Now iTeleport.
@The Madman
Make it run on a touchpro 2 and u could use it since a stylus and a resistive touch screen is very accurate
So is this like Meego? Man how many netbook OSs are out there now? I am guessing this is a Linux based distro?
@VAVA Mk 2
actually it's based on ubuntu netbook edition, which is linux based
@VAVA Mk 2
Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Jolicloud are the two main netbook OSes that are actually released. Meego is on its way. That's three full-fat netbook OSes. Then there's ChromeOS, I suppose, but I don't count that as an OS in the same sense as the previous three since it doesn't actually have(/give you full access to) local storage.
@The Madman isn't meego already 1.0?
Yes, another netbook-oriented Linux distro, just what we need.
If all the dev time for all the netbook OS (UNR, Moblin, ChromeOS perhaps four others that enjoyed brief fame at the dawn of the netbook era) was actually funneled into a single OS, we'd actually have something decent by now, not just a bunch of half-finished projects.
@bebop actually we have something decent right now, windows 7
@bebop that's all I think about Linux software in general. There's plenty too many software projects, but none work well.
@pabloda
well if you want to go like that, ubuntu netbook remix is based on ubuntu which is based on debian which is based on linux
@pabloda the vid said Jolicloud is no longer based on Netbook Remix - it is built on it's own foundation.
My iPad is still better, much better.
@Raytem People like you are why we have flame wars. Why bring up an iProduct in a discussion about netbooks.
Go away
@Raytem JFC, you are one giant fail aren't you?
@geniusdog254 I smell you all burning. It doesn't take more then a couple of minutes to iHaters to get a non iHaters comment disappear. You are asking me why I brought iProduct in it ? You guys hate/bash any iProduct any chance you get. iPad is competing with netbooks, to some SO ITS EFFEN RELEVENT.
@Raytem
And to some you are a douche while to others your just an idiot
@DefPoet My legitimate comment keep going to oblivion is a proof you iHaters are in big majority on engadget as commenters. So sad how ignorant you all are.
Look at how our lives are changing. All you need to look for now is Apps and Friends!
Why it's so jolly! Or is it joe-lee? Me thinkee it one big failee.
so anyone knows where to download the acutal iso of jolicloud 1.0?
@pabloda Not out yet. But you can get the pre-final .iso at their website and wait for the update this week. Thats what I'm doing.
downloading to my 1005HA can't wait to see it in action! and best off all it does the installation really nicely so I don't screw anything up with partitions etc. :D not that I would but it relieves the stress of it.
look the thing i hate about jolicloud is that i cannot use the .exe files to install and play low level games that i play on my netbook, its kind of poor taste imo
Google Chrome OS will be my choice for my netbook, because it will most likely have a .exe reader that is easier to use and not a huge learning curve, which is why i mostly do not like linux...its not as simple and simplicity is good when i am forced to reinstall OSs constantly
@23542354 how can you expect any OS other than Windows to run .exe files?
If you need to run .exe files, stick with your Windows. You could try virtualization or emulation, but netbooks aren't powerful enough.
@23542354
No other OS will ever read/open .executive files. You are a plume example why companies have to dumb down products for the average consumer. People need to Google topics and read on them. This goes for everything not just tech
@DefPoet
Other operating systems do use exes, they aren't compatible with each other though.
I had this installed on my MacBook for a looong time. I might try to dual-boot my Netbook with it, or triple boot with it(I have Mac OSX and Win7 right now). It certainly is a lot slicker than when I first tried it.
I wonder how it'd turn out on a Tablet...
Space Invaders? I'm in!
Last week I used pre-final 1.0 and it sucked. But this looks nice, and I was using it on a normal laptop anyway.
This is kind of delicious.
I'm debating a netbook, and if I end up taking the plunge, this would be fantastic to at least try out for a bit.
Wow... this is the perfect little OS for the average netbook user. I might just give it a go on my laptop for the fun of it.
Wow, it took like forever to boot for some reason.
What's wrong with Easypeasy 1.6?
I've been running the beta version for a while now, and I enjoy it. It runs great as a media PC interface, since it also supports Hulu Desktop. Definitely worth a look, even if you don't have a netbook.
