SLCD-equipped HTC Desire 'coming soon' to Telus
We'd already seen an HTC Desire with North American 3G hit the FCC, and it looks like we now know exactly where it's headed -- Telus has just announced that the phone is "coming soon" to its network. What's more, the carrier has also confirmed that the phone will be equipped with a 3.7-inch Sony Super LCD screen instead of the regular AMOLED display that's in short supply. Otherwise, the phone is the same Android 2.1-powered, Snapdragon-based, Sense-skinned device we've seen all along, which is hardly a bad thing -- unless you're waiting for a Desire HD, that is.

Anybody wanna tell me what the fuck the difference between a regular LCD, a TFT LCD, an IPS LCD, and an SLCD are?
@kenny goo
Every LCD has it's own subpanel type. Here are a few of them with their pros and cons (none of them are perfect & picking one is a compromise)
TN: The fastest in terms of response time. Bad viewing angles. Poor black levels. Least in terms of color accuracy.
IPS: Average response time. Good viewing angles and color accuracy. Poor black levels.
S-PVA: The slowest in terms of overall response time. You are more likely to see ghosting on this type of LCD. Also has the best black levels of LCD's (2000-3000:1 static contrast ratio).
The quality and intelligence of your post is about right for a fanboy.
super lcd ? another marketing wording as of retina display ?
Lesson learned by HTC: Invest in screen technologies and make your own screens.
"SLCD" is dumb as hell. What kind of panel is it? Does anyone know?
Super LCD is the name Sony gave to this screen... It is an TFT LCD screen, with similar technology to the great IPS LCD that is used on the iPhone 4. We should then have good brightness and wide viewing angles. It should do better than AMOLED in sunlight... but compared with SAMOLED... (?)
BTW, the Telus site mentions also "Get a desktop like browsing experience with Adobe® Flash Player support to see imbedded videos" This sounds like a promess to deliver Froyo don't you think?
@Badmatt who knows but sense UI already supports flash
@iDroidPhone Only Flash Lite, which isn't quite as good as the Flash that's coming in Froyo.
I want to see HTC pull a Nokia N8 and support UMTS 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 bands. That's true North American 3G freedom.

Thanks for the cool phone, TELUS. Now can you get off your ass and give us that Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero? It seems everyone else on the planet has been blessed with it... what's the hold up?
@Traycer
Dude, like you, I waited, and waited, and waited -- and then got sick of waiting.
Here's what I'm running on a Telus HTC Hero; fast, stable, everything works, excellent battery life:
1) VillainRom 10.3
2) MinFreeManager set to "agressive"
3) Radio set to "GSM PRL" (check the "battery fix" thread in the xda-developers Hero Development forum. Yes, it really does work.)
Let me know if you have any questions.
@FreeAsInSpeech
Yeah, I only picked up my Hero at the beginning of May, and I promised myself I would use it like a normal person. Of course, back then, the assumption was that the 2.1 update would drop in June. Then July. Then August. And now "it'll come when it comes".
Although I have to say, even with 1.5 and Sense, it's still pretty sweet compared to my old Mike dumbphone. Cheaper plan too!
Could someone PLEASE OUT THEIR IN THE please tell me if this baby coming to AT&T? Cause I'm still waiting for this HTC Desire ever since MAY! I'm dying to get one but don't want to buy it unlocked.
@Inspector Gadget80
Step 1. Buy iPhone
Step 2. Sell iPhone on eBay
Step 3. Buy unlocked desire
Congradulations, you just got the Desire for the same price you would have paid were available in the USA.
Bout friggin' time we get another android handset. Still not enough. Want EVO if HD3 isn't real.

@FreeAsInSpeech Villain 12.0 is waay better
@iDroidPhone
hey -- could you tell me what the differences are that you've noticed? I have absolutely no issues, nothing to ask for beyond what I'm running with 10.3.
I'm too lazy too do a wipe and set everything up again unless there's a big positive change.
@iDroidPhone
Thanks, I'll check out 12.0 as well!
Good for Canada and all but it's not like it's an iPhone. Why does Engadget even announce non Apple phones within months of a major iPhone release? Nobody but WINnerds care.
@Fate
They wouldnt have a press conference if they were going to fix it. Thats what updates/recalls are for. Steve Jobs is just going to revolutionize the way we hold our cell phone... Only with our right hands lol
@pple is poo
How does one "wife the floor"?
Just as a clarification, FCC certification has no bearing on Canadian carriers picking up the phone, since the FCC is a foreign government body.
In Canada, the responsibility for such things are broken up into two institutions; Industry Canada, who handles spectrum allocations and device certification among many other things, and the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, technically operating under Industry Canada), which handles the regulatory aspect of things.
Retina display all the way
