HTC starts selling phones in China under its own name
It's long been the case that if you wanted a HTC handset over in the world's most populous nation, you'd have had to look for its rebadged variant under the Dopod brand. But, as of today, that is no more. The prolific Taiwanese phone maker has decided that its name is now recognizable and valuable enough in China to be put on its own hardware and is kicking off a campaign with four own-branded phones. The Wildfire and Desire we're all familiar with already, while the Tianxi looks like a mildly tweaked HD2 and the Tianyi is a mix-and-match of design elements from the rest of HTC's portfolio. The company's also announcing a partnership with China Mobile to bring these puppies to market, so it's looking like smooth sailing ahead. Full PR after the break.

BREAKING NEWS: HTC sells phones as HTC.
BREAKING NEWS:Apple CEO to speak at apple event.
@Androidsugly
HTC has never sold it's own branded handsets in China before so, yes, this is news.
@Androidsugly
It's an ungodly hour so your downranking might take some time. Let me get you started anyways.
@strawe
why not uprank? its a factual statement
@Androidsugly
it's a trivial statement that isn't worth reading. A downrank hides it from sight and would be appropriate.
@Androidsugly
I actually agree with you........
@Androidsugly BREAKING NEWS: You insist on continuing posting on a techblog you have been banned from on multiple occasions to spout your ridiculous bullcrap because you have no life.
The Red Menace
@Coke Engadget, I must say the communist Android robot is an abomination.
Will it be cheaper than in the US/UK?
@cdf74dc9 it must more expensive than us/uk
@cdf74dc9
since its made there it should be cheaper :/
@Coke
All my HTC phones are made in Taiwan... so where is your proof they are made in china?
@Coke Most consumer electronics for export enjoy significant tax subsidies, so even if they are made domestically, they will still be more expensive when sold locally. It's often the case that a laptop you buy in the US will cost less (w/shipping and tax) than when you buy it in Kunshan (where most HP/Dell/Acer/Lenovo laptops are assembled).
That's too bad. This looks cooler than plain HTC:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/dopod-looking-to-slap-its-name-on-g1-for-china-next-year/
Any more details on the Tianxi AT ALL?
Dying for a HD2 style phone that will work in Australia with Android :\
@nvrend
The unlocked EU verison works just fine in Australia and Froyo runs great
on it
http://pocketnow.com/how-to/how-to-run-android-22-froyo-on-your-htc-hd2-video
@DefPoet
Oh wow, does it run froyo 100% or is it still buggy at all?
I 100% want a android phone but if it runs android perfectly then i guess ill pick it up!
@nvrend
It runs, but it's far from perfect.
It doesn't utilise the hardware properly yet, for example, the automatic light sensor doesn't work properly and it can occasionally have trouble charging.
Above all, it's only capable of utilising about 256MB of the total 576MB for now.
All in all, it's a hell of a lot better than Windows Mobile, but it's far from the speed and fidelity other Snapdragon phones from HTC attain.
@TT
See this is exactly what im afraid of.
Also i read so many good things on the samsung processor being much faster than the snapdragon.
Really want to get a phone that will serve me for atleast a year.
I have two iphones and a BB9700 to sell that im completely sick of.
Just want the perfect android phone with 4" screen give or take.
Also want it to run gingerbread perfect.
Is it worth waiting for the 2ghz androids?
HTC/high tech computer = Dopod? Sounds like a crappy Apple rip-off... oh wait, that's exactly what it is.
@kruger4gamecocks
i know! .... they have touchscreens!
TOTAL APPLE RIPOFF
Just another round up of crappy phones...
@rswllgrns
There are 3 other type of trolls. iFan, Microfan, and Blackfan. Which one are you so I can feed you some cookies?
@cdf74dc9
you forgot fandroid and ..... palmfan?
I always read "Dopod" as "doodoopod". I just can't get that out of my head~
Why I get down-ranked? Everyone agrees!
wow the dopod logo is pretty awesome.
*an HTC handset
You're slipping Engadget!
Tianxi looks more than a mildly tweaked HD2 to me. it looks like it has a front facing secondary camera and capacitive buttons. And the Tianyi looks like a mini Nexus One
So are these devices going to be running standard Android, or will they be running the forked OPhone version?
Will they have access to the Android market?
And will they have access to the *full* market if so, with paid apps and uncensored?
Take that commies!
I spent all these years thinking that dopod where HTC kirfs
@TheIndyGamer
Another reason the KIRF label automatically devalues something in the mind of anyone who takes it seriously. Sorry argument spilling over from last KIRF... Feel free to ignore an irrelevant.
Taiwan will retake China with the an army of Androids.
And you thought there stock was growing fast before?
-Boom
?!
Wow, a Taiwanese company selling their products in China? And China allows it?
What a breaking news!!!! HTC is HTC finally in China!! Hurray!!! Banzai!! Wansui!!!
HTC Tianyi = CPU STE T6719, 416 MHz 3.2 Resistive touch screen
Resolution: 240 x 320 QVGA thats worse than the HTC hero Spec's from 2009 and also the wildfire is Resistive and 320x240 res so the only decent phone that could run Gingerbread out of the Android 3 in China is the Desire - ill stick with my modded 2.2 on my hero until then
