Email-based FaceTime support surfaces in iOS 4.1 beta 3
Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice? Fuhgetaboutit. Apple has a thing for introducing new iPods each fall, and given that the existing touch is being given away gratis with a new student computer (not to mention how long in the tooth it is), we're guessing the tradition will continue in 2010. We'd heard earlier on in the year that Apple may toss FaceTime over to the iPod line whenever it finally gained a front-facing camera, and now the evidence is nearly too strong to ignore. In the latest iOS 4.1 beta (numero three, if you're keeping count), there's an option to connect to a contact via FaceTime by ringing their digits or by pinging their email address. We're guessing that the latter is there mostly for iPod touch users (the ones without Apple Peel 520s, anyway), and it's the most glaring sign yet that the next generation touch will flippin' finally boast a camera (or just a way around that SMS-based activation?). Still, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high -- falling ain't no fun, you know?

iPod Touch w/ facetime is starting to make perfect sense now.
@Rick Astley
Yea totally. I'm just hoping it has a nice sensor like the iPhone 4, and that it will also boast the Retina Display.
Quick question, as I have never really handled the iPhone 4 long enough: does the screen turn blue when you tilt it?
Thanks in advance.
@Joseph9307
I've heard that the viewing angles are very good.
@Joseph9307
It does not, same colours from any viewing angle.
@Joseph9307 No, it doesn't turn blue at any angle. It looks great.
@Joseph9307 No it doesn't. Have to say it is the best looking screen on any phone so far.
@Almo
Your wrong.
My iPhone 4 turns blue at almost any angle*
*While viewing a blue background
@Joseph9307 No it does not the iPhone 4's screen is amazing and clear also there is no discoloration.

"No it doesn't. Have to say it is the best looking screen on any phone so far."
Why do you have to deal with absolutes, its good looking for sure, but it isn't the best screen by a long shot.
@BlackedOut
Then please tell us, what is the best phone screen you have ever seen.
@BlackedOut
There is no better screen on the market. It's the higest quality IPS with the highest DPI resolution (320) of any screen in the market.
Super AMOLED still has too many problems to be a viable competitor.
@HighestRanked1
super amoled is great. better color contrast, letters not as sharp...but still sharper than any phone not called iphone 4.
@who else but Quagmire I have both an iPhone 4 and Captivate. I just set them side by side and looked at all sorts of viewing angels. The Captivate has way over saturated colors as it is, but definitely has a nice bluish glow at harsh angles, the iPhone does not. Although it isnt really a big deal unless your comparing it directly to an iPhone or similar device.
@RLBurkes Oh...... what good are *facts* to haters?
@RLBurkes Facts are no good for iHaters.
That would be great
good thing im upgrading from my ageing itouch 2g this september, i hope the back camera is at least the quality of 3gs(maybe even hd recording but thats unlikely), that it has a retina display, design like iphone 4 (unlikely, but at least theres no calls to drop and itd look better tan iphones cos it wouldnt need a jacket)
@nq83 What are you talking about? Apple doesn't make a device called the iTouch.
@TheBrizz don't be a smart ass
@TheBrizz
Funny...
@Almo I would say its very likely we see HD recording. Apple likes to keep their systems no matter if they're slightly a different product (i.e. iPod Touch = iPhone 4) similar. I'm also about 99% sure we will see an A4 processor.
@Jake Root
Rummor tally for the iPod Touch 4th gen:
- Front facing camera
- Back facing camera
- Retina display
- A4 chip
- FaceTime integration
- 3G data circuitry (iPad style)
- Anodized aluminum back
Rumored to be appearing sooner than later this year.
@nq83
I need to upgrade from my 1st gen iPod Touch, myself.
Personally, all I REALLY need is a massive amount of space. That way I can replace my iPod classic while we're at it.
@Phoenix
Also I'm really glad I remembered the comma between "Touch" and "myself"...
@Phoenix a 128gb touch and I can use my 160gb for photo and music backup/secondary ipod at work.
Cool, now integrate with a desktop chat client and we're in business
Has anyone else noticed that facetime is NOT video calling as it doesn't work with actual video phones or even the over the mobile phone network. It's basically using a webcam on a (small) computer like in messenger or skype.
@R2 D2 What is the difference? It's video calling on a locked down format, only over WiFi (sans-Jailbreak).
@R2 D2
Which is pretty much what video calling on windows live messenger or skype is wouldn't you say? I guess it's quite a subtle difference, but as video calling had already existed in Europe for years as something any manufacturer can support it would really suck if people started thinking apple invented it or it was normal for it to only work with iPhones.
@R2 D2 Completely agree that it would be wrong if people assume that Apple created video-chat, but they may well popularise it (I think it's too early to say if they have yet). It certainly hasn't been popular yet, in Europe or anywhere else (to my knowledge).
@d0mth0ma5
I video chat almost every day, and I'm sure plenty of people use skype, google chat, etc.
@threpac Sorry, to clarify I meant video-chat on a mobile.
@d0mth0ma5
Actually Apple made FaceTime a free and open standard. Anyone can use it to integrate video phone calls into their system/software.
Not the same as an MSN/Yahoo video chat. This is an actual phone call to an actual telephone, with video. However it does have the ability to seamlessly integrate and switch to a computer video chat. For example if Skype chose to integrate FaceTime it could call an iPhone 4 -like calling any other phone- but would have video included. The iPhone won't need to launch its Skype app to exchange video feed with the caller. Hard to say if Skype is going to like that but the competition probably will.
@d0mth0ma5
In Korea, some native korean samsung phones models (not android) already have vdo call feature since the past couple of years.
Any possibility of an iPad version?????????
@pishmish When the new iPad is out in April next year, yeah.
@d0mth0ma5 I hope a version comes out in fall that would be awesome, and I would tottaly buy one!
@pishmish Obviously as this is Apple virtually no one knows when they'll bring out iPad2 but they seem to have set themselves up for some nice evenly spread time periods for the iOS products (iPad in April, iPhone in June/July, iPod in September) with a nice big gap for the "Holiday" shopping period.
So new iPod Touch drops September 8th then?
@d0mth0ma5
It could be released earlier, just won't be included in the back to school offer. Has happened once before.
@Almo You're right, twice in fact. Offer ended on the 16th in 2007 (original iPod Touch got released on the 13th), then 15th compared to 9th in 2008 and 8th compared to 9th in 2009. It's that kind of ballpark though.
Couldn't they simply call it iChat and have a combined system with their desktop version to chat through video whether through phone numbers or email? It makes more sense.
@Saad
it does
it could be a bit like their version of blackberry pin (but with videochat)
@Saad
Since they're saying it's a standard, naming it iChat would've complicated things I would imagine.
@Saad
I think that make sense too. I mean Apple already has a good iChat foothold. Plus it would probably be a better push for the application if it was named iChat and went across all Apple devices.
@Saad that would be too easy ;(
@Saad : you're missing the point. They are already doing everything you say, except they aren't calling it iChat. What difference does it make what they call it anyway? It's more likely that when the desktop client arrives it will be iChat, but re-branded as "Facetime."
Now put the same feature in the next Ipad , and include a good camera with photobooth, and skype support
@Hydra
I'm totally with you there Hydra. A front facing camera (or current lack of) is the only reason why I've not yet gone doen the ipad road. Let them get all this up and running for us first, then we'll swoop in for the kill...!
This has got to be the first Apple related thread I've read on engadget where people have been allowed to simply just have a good general discussion about the article - no flaming, trolls, made-up negativity. Amazing! Hope it lasts...
