Email-based FaceTime support surfaces in iOS 4.1 beta 3
Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice? Fuhgetaboutit. Apple has a thing for introducing new iPods each fall, and given that the existing touch is being given away gratis with a new student computer (not to mention how long in the tooth it is), we're guessing the tradition will continue in 2010. We'd heard earlier on in the year that Apple may toss FaceTime over to the iPod line whenever it finally gained a front-facing camera, and now the evidence is nearly too strong to ignore. In the latest iOS 4.1 beta (numero three, if you're keeping count), there's an option to connect to a contact via FaceTime by ringing their digits or by pinging their email address. We're guessing that the latter is there mostly for iPod touch users (the ones without Apple Peel 520s, anyway), and it's the most glaring sign yet that the next generation touch will flippin' finally boast a camera (or just a way around that SMS-based activation?). Still, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high -- falling ain't no fun, you know?

@Potts
There are good rumors going around that the next iPad will also include the RetinaDisplay.
The iPad screen in terms of dimensions is two iPhone screens high by two iPhone screens log. This means that the RetinaDisplay would take the iPad's resolution well beyond HD. That's an insane amount of pixels.
@HighestRanked1 I very strongly doubt it. That is waaay too many pixels.

;)
@APV There is no way in Hell Apple would sell an iPod touch that thick
@APV
Odd, because that's the same thickness as the current iPod touch.
@APV
I dont know about that exact look, but im pretty sure they will be doing something like that.
Did you make it though? it looks very good :)
@uckApple
Yeah, I made it. It's what I would want in a new iPod touch.
I have an iPhone 3G with no-service, mainly as an iPod touch with a camera, mic, better speaker, etc...
If the iPod touch get's upgraded similar to what I show in my little mockup, I'll surely get it.
:D
And where did my Tip from 5h ago land?
I think tipping engadget about news isn't worth it anymore..
3rd time i tip something, and then later on they post it... without giving credit...
*sadface*
@creepin
i bet many people tipped this
@creepin
You can still tip your hat to Engadget though.
Where is my iChat Mobile?? I thought it was a given considering the front-facing camera. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Beejive, but nothing beats integrated in the phone.
So, does this already work on the iPhone 4 (using an email address for FaceTime calls), or is this just an unused piece of code at this point?
i wanna use facetime on my macbook to talk with people on their phone........Billy singvosa is a bitch
I can't wait to send an email FaceTime request to Steve Jobs.
@TechNick
Funny. He's known to respond to random people.
sjobs@apple.com
@TechNick
Well what do you want to tell him/ask him?
Darren Murph is by far one of the best writers on the site why can't the other guys write good, clean Apple articles?
@threpac I thought for a moment you were ending that sentence as, "...why can't the other guys write good." My head nearly exploded, thankfully that isn't the case.
Doesn't Skype let you video call anybody else with Skype already? Is this new tech to anybody?
@HKCally
Skype only connects to Skype. Apple made FaceTime an open standard so any one can connect to any one.
@HighestRanked1
Except Skype is already the de facto standard and Skype is available for iOS and just about every other OS. How long until Jobs announces that Skype is buggy, drains the battery, a security risk etc despite a few hundred million people having zero problems with it?
@HKCally This article has nothing to do with Flash. Please take your Apple hate and Flash and Adobe love elsewhere.
@JojoMojo
You said Flash, not me.
I hope the base model is 16GB and $199
I'm betting on iPod Touch and iChat support this Fall.
What's the chances of apple including microsims and 3g dataplans on the new ipod touch?
Latest rumour:
My trusty old PIII box (that's Pentium III for you young whippersnappers out there):
- Slackware version: dunno (downloaded it onto 30 floppies last time)
- X11 with some minor video issues (that S3 Virge ain't a virgin anymore)
- vic, vat, wb and sd
Yep it does multicast. Multi-what?
Multicast. Like stream video to lots of peeps all at once. Without totally blowing away bandwidth by sending bazillions of streams to a bazillion individual hosts.
Yeah, it required me to punch up 'vi' a couple of times to change some config settings. But at least I didn't have to sell my soul with the devil and put a mortgage on my firstborn just to 'register' with some big corp.
...For all of you who don't get it, this was a flash from THE PAST. Look how far we've come in 2010? Fewer options, more payola, less knowledge, fewer skillz.
Big Brother likes this, 'cause He can tap into any camera or mike (whether front-facing or not), mailbox or Twitter timeline.
How I long for the olden days...
@miki4242
but does it run crysis?
@who else but Quagmire Giggity
Cnet has a rumor on their site that said the new iPod touch, nano, and a "mystery" device would be released early on the 16th or 17th. I hope it does!
@feelinmycrotch The mystery device better be a new apple tv -- based on iOS 4?
Huh, I thought the email thing would be for iPhone to computer facetiming, but iPhone to iPod facetime makes more sense...
All I want is 128GB! Bring it...
Man, since jailbreak- I've used Facetime SO much on my iPhone. idk how much i'd use it on an iPod touch, but being that more people will have the iPod touch i'm sure it'll be used by a lot of users. Once it hits the iPad then it'll really set sail.
