iPod touch coming in a 'few weeks' with dual cameras and Retina Display, suggests John Gruber
The sun will rise, pigeons will annoy, and Daring Fireball's John Gruber will get inside scoops on Apple product releases. So it goes. This time he's touching on, erm, the iPod touch, making an offhand (though firmly declarative) comment on a post about the Dell Streak: "if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you'll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras." The man's not one to fool around with such matters, so we tend to believe him here. It also helps that nothing he's saying would be really surprising -- a new iPod in September? With features trickled down from the most recent iPhone? Then again, that camera has proved elusive before.

should i wait for the white one?
@dark star if it has dual cameras (5 MP on back like iPhone 4), Then I'm selling my iPod Touch 3G 32GB that I bought in Dec. 2009 to get this one. At least I'd be pleased with it for nex couple years. iPod Touch 3G IMHO will be outdated after this one is released as it wasnt a big change from iPod Touch 2G. The only two new things were faster processor & RAM and Voice Control.
@statickeith next*
@dark star It depends on which story you believe. "Painting it white is difficult...more difficult than we imagined." (their story). "They are fixing the antenna issues." (internet rumor, which I was totally surprised to see Engadget nearly spit as fact in their most recent post on the firing of Papermaster as they either blamed the delay of the white iPhone on him or implied that Steve was emotional and couldn't think straight about the guy who may or may not have been to blame about the iPhone 4 antenna.
"Whatever the real story is, we're sure that Steve, visibly agitated at having to host an antennagate press conference, wasn't too pleased at having stood in front of the media promising an "end of July" ship date for the already delayed white iPhone 4 only to delay it again just a few days later. Straw, meet camel."

@statickeith
I completely agree. My 2G 16GB iPod Touch is already outdated (too slow and prone to crashing) already!
@dark star If it comes with such spec plus gps, for sure, i'll buy one.I just don't think it's worth to pay over $600 for a phone which has design flaw.
@statickeith Don't forget, the 3g can multitask also ha ha.
@dark star I think this iPod has a chance to be thinner than the iPhone 4 because it wont have a cell phone radio
@statickeith
Yeah, that's exactly what I was planning on doing!
That Retina Display is quite the looker. Plus, I'm a secret CAMWHORE.
@statickeith - I wonder if apple will try to differentiate the ipod touch with a lower rez camera? maybe 3mp back and via front. Either way, I am getting this :) WIth an android that can tether freely, this is the perfecto match. I just hope the rumors of a 3" display are wrong. Keep it 3.5! and I sort of doubt apple would make 2 different size screens anyway. What are your thoughts, statickeith ?
@statickeith That really wasn't iPod touch 3G, it was more like 2.5G. This (if it's real and legit) should be considered the real third generation iPod touch.
@POZ I don't know about the camera. I mean, the iPod touch 3G is about 9mm thick and iPhone 4 is 9.3. So may be they can fit in the 5 MP camera?
And I don't think apple would sacrifice a 3.5 inch for 3 inch. 3.5 is an ideal size for such devices. Also, iPod touch is actually just an iPhone that can't make calls (and without camera until now) so everything should be the same as the iPhone 4.
@statickeith Actually apple only Claims 2 generations of iPod touches. This would be the 3rd gen version. Just an FYI
@dark star I hope they get rid of the stupid chrome back. It gets dirty, scratched and within a few days, gets is really ugly. And it makes the device unnecessarily heavy. But, please don't use glass. The plastic used on the older iPhones seems like a good choice.
@dark star
I can't believe the importance of that damn GSM chip... That's basically all the iPod touches are missing. Slap in a GSM chip and you must sell your soul and cough up a boatload of money to use it. I really don't get that... It's gouging IMHO.
Where's that external GSM iPod touch pack again?...
DOUBLE CAMERAS? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!!!
@Sax25
FML, bought an iPod Touch in February 2010.....
@juanvaldez I just think they don't want people to whine about the brown "staining" on the back like with the 3gs. I have a few white electronics that this happens too, and I don't really care, but some people are more anal about such things.
@statickeith Exactly what I have been thinking since the iPhone 4 came out, I want this iPod touch if it has what I want: dual cameras (5mp) retina display, A4, gyroscope would be an ok bonus, but I have no practical use for it currently, the only thing I've been thinking about is how much my iPod touch will sell for, and if I can restore the new iPod touch from backup of 32 gb 3rd gen, also hoping but not caring remotely for 64 gb entry model, so it will easily last me a few years, honestly, while all you suckers are either dealing with at$t and it's data caps, or saying that you lobe verizon but you just ignore it's high prices, me and this guy are using iPod touches that have no competitors, and no contract, and no service plans, but obviously I understand some people need phones, just want to make fun of them
@dark star I love how some of you are actuaaly taking seriously! Lmao
@weaky6 Taking seriously that this will be the new iPod touch? I knew since the iPhone 4 came out that the new iPod touch would be this, and it makes sense, and I don't know if this guy is legit inside leak, but it could be a lucky guess, cause we all know it's happening, but all we have to argue about is whether this guy is just using common knowledge like the rest of us, or if he has inside knowledge
Wow Face Time and all.
And guess what? It doesn't have a flawed antenna b!tches.
@statickeith Lucky for me my 32GB Classic finally shit the bed....looks like I finally have an excuse to upgrade!
@Joseph9307
Somehow I don't think the iPod Touch will be able to have the Retina display. Didn't iSuppli put the cost of the Retina screen alone at almost $200? Unless they raise the price of the iPod, I don't know how they'd be able to basically just give us an iPhone 4 sans the antenna.
I'm also crossing my fingers for GPS, but still, I'm not too hopeful. We'll see.
@Gadget Addict
If you want a 3g iPod, get an iPhone. Plus the pack was sprint cdma.
@Arayta Nope, I just now looked up the pricing for the retina display and they said it costs $28.50. The whole thing according to them is 187.51.
@statickeith I am guessing that they would have to make it more squared off if they want to fit those cameras in instead of using the old contoured design this time around.
@bob1000 They should use the metal they used fro the iPhone 4 antenna for the back of the iPod touch or the Unibody stuff they use on macs that would be dope
@goopy its not flawed. do your research people honestly. i take that back... just dont take the media at their word. my pre does the same thing if you "hold it wrong"
lol
@Sax25
3D!!!
@andrewia how can you call even a 1st-gen iPod touch "outdated". theyre almost the only company out there making something like this. the only thing I can think of that makes something similar is the Archos 5.
@statickeith All iPods are outdated once the new ones comes out. However, if you really want to sell your current iPod Touch, I'd try to do it now before the new one comes out if you want to get any money at all for it. Otherwise just keep it and use it for something else around the house (perhaps a remote) because you'll definitely not come out ahead by selling it after the new ones come out.
@Tohe It doesn't /have/ an antenna...
@dark star: The iPod touch will be rebranded as the smallest model in the iPad family; you should also wait for iOS 4.5 - coming at the back end of this year. A very impressive piece of new UI functionality will be known as 'platelets', a clever cross between dashboard gadgets and popups. Why 'platelets'? Because you'll be able to drag them together, where they'll stick or coagulate - merging their respective UIs, collating, sharing and aggregating information whilst they're together and joined - becoming standalone again if dragged apart.
You read it here first!
whwooh ahakoowa aooohuoaac? RRRrrruurgh!
@wookieecrisp Translation: A new iPod touch? Sweet.
@wookieecrisp A new gimmick account? Shit.
Translation: A new gimmick account? Shit.
Seriously. Cut it with this role playing bullshit.
@Pickaxe Bless you sir for promoting responsible commenting. :)
@Pickaxe
+1 roleplaying stopped being funny after lord vader made his third post or so. stop it.
@safe travels
lord vader is an exception.. appears to be!
@safe travels
roleplaying accounts can be done well; try reading joystiq for a while. there are quite a few of them over there, they just don't overdo it so it gets old.
@Pickaxe Three stuck up commenters in a row. Role playing can be extremely phone. Not to mention you're on a technology site so I'm sure at least a quarter of the people here have either played DnD or went LARPing.
@safe travels Lord Vader is always funny.
@WilliamNighthawk
What does it mean to be "extremely phone"?
And guess what, it can also make phone calls if you hold it the right way.
@muol
Um no it can't. It's and iPod...
@muol
You just had to do it huh.... I think I smell a downrank coming your way. Ruuunnnn!!!!
@hexoDAT64
An iPod widely rumored to feature a 'front facing' camera for... wait for it... Face Time Video Calls!
So... I guess it just might be able to make some 'calls'.
@DaHarder Actually, it's not exactly a "call"
As the 4.1 software showed email based FaceTime invitation
Anywho, dual cameras would also mean built in microphone (YES!); a feature I had been waiting for since the first iPod touch. Retina display will be awesome on it. I'm really hoping to see a 5MP camera like the iPhone 4 considering the fact that they managed to squeeze in a really good camera (if not the best) into iPhone 4 which is only about 0.5pm thicker than the current iPod touch.
