iPod touch coming in a 'few weeks' with dual cameras and Retina Display, suggests John Gruber

The sun will rise, pigeons will annoy, and Daring Fireball's John Gruber will get inside scoops on Apple product releases. So it goes. This time he's touching on, erm, the iPod touch, making an offhand (though firmly declarative) comment on a post about the Dell Streak: "if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you'll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras." The man's not one to fool around with such matters, so we tend to believe him here. It also helps that nothing he's saying would be really surprising -- a new iPod in September? With features trickled down from the most recent iPhone? Then again, that camera has proved elusive before.

@Tech Dude Probably not. The next iPod touch will probably have a design like the iPhone 4, which is noticeably thinner than the 3GS. 3rd party accessories will of course be updated for the new model after a bit of a wait.

Yes! Although this is not "real" as in confirmed by apple, I am so excited. When all my friends upgraded to the 3rd gen iPod Touch, I stuck with my trusty 2g. I am so glad now that I can upgrade to and even better one! YES!!!!!

That is an good iPod, really good!, with 5MP in the back, and the frontal camera for facetime, amazing, if they release one with 120Gb of internal memory, sign me in immediately.

I guess it will have iOS 4 and the A4 processor, so it will be more powerfull than the iPad, and smaller!

@YorchArturo More powerful than the iPad? The iPad already has an A4, and it's 1GHz instead of ~800MHz. The iPad doesn't have iOS 4 yet but should get an update in a few months.

@Macskeeball but the ipad doesn't have th 120GB I want, that is why I said that, and the camera!, so because of those reasons it is more powerfull not just the processor, and the multitasking, and the RAM

Even though it will most likely have a front and rear camera and FaceTime don't be surprised if the only mic available will be on the headphones! Apple will differentiate the iPod from the iPhone! They don't want to make it too easy and convenient to use iPod as a phone especially with the new cdma/gsm peels!

@jacksTLOS Apple could put a mic on the iPod Touch and for all those that want the iPhone, it won't matter to them at all. They'll still get the iPhone. They'll just say: "I don't care, I want an iPhone 4". :)

I HAVE to get one my iPod touch 2g is an mc model so I can't even get ios 4 best features even after using redsn0w cuz it won't work with mc. I hope he's right cuz I want this thing right now more than my left pinky toe. Who needs those anyway when I can get an iPod.

After you jailbreak with redsn0w or JailbreakMe, there is an app in RockApp that uses Winterboard to toggle features on/off for iPod Touch 2G (doesn't say only for non-MC)

I'm a student thinking about buying a Mac. They offer students a free ipod touch (8gb, valued at $200). They say you can pay the difference and upgrade it to the ipods with more storage capacity (and I believe they are a newer generation).
I know Apple usually introduces new ipods in the fall; I imagine their deal for students helps get rid of their old stock. This deal ends September seventh.

My questions are the following:
1. If there is a particular trend, what week of September does Apple release new ipods?
2. If anyone is familiar with the Apple's policy, do you think I could return an ipod touch and buy/exchange for the newer one? Is the apple store limit fourteen days?

WTF, Apple? How about you manufacture enough iPhones to manage your international demand before you start sucking away Retina displays for iPod Touches? Canada is suffering from SERIOUS shortages on iPhones (Rogers stores are getting 4-5 phones a WEEK, on average, and selling them out in approximately 15 minutes).
