Though it's
really quite a capable handset, Dell's Streak brought several disappointments to its
belated US launch; namely, a pastry-based OS
without any creme filling, and a $549 version
that's still SIM-locked. While we doubt AT&T's iron grip will release the Streak from the latter servitude, Dell's Lionel Menchaca suggests that the former problem may get solved all at once, because the company is considering skipping Android 2.1 altogether for stateside Streaks and upgrading them directly to the
faster, more capable Android 2.2. We don't have a timeframe for a potential release, of course, as the device just went on sale, but it's clear that Dell hears your cries for the functionality Froyo brings.
thats great to hear. but i hope the rumor doesn't go he way of other tablets (i consider this a big phone) which always seem to be "coming soon" but never arrive or join the party too late.
Thats awesome! Its kind of sad how long it takes to upgrade to new os versions though. The nexus one has had 2.2 for what? A month or two? The companys should put more of a focus on getting that software out.
does anyone think that the upgrade to 2.2 will make the audio quality of the mp3 player any better...this is like one of the only thinks still keeping me iffy about this thing since I would definitely use it for listening a lot
These manufacturers like Moto will be all making WP7 handsets soon , for fear of Oracle suing them individually. I`m out.
Droid for sale.
Ballmer was right , open-source isn`t really free and turns into one big lawsuit quagmire.
Microsoft went through this in 1997 and cost them over a billion back then.
Microsoft is now sitting pretty with .NET , Silverlight , Visual Studio , Expression Blend for WP7.
Android is really kind of a mess anyways.
For every good phone , there are tons of crap ones.
No unified interface or hardware specs either.
Time is perfect for Microsoft to pounce !
@bufbarnaby RawR...the sleeping giant has awakened !
Im on treak with 2.1 and its fast and all you know,bot still no video calls ,no skype,no vid calls phone to phone so i dn't known what for its the front cmera?? Come on thad was 5 yers ago? Prosze holera!
Bot still i love my dell :)
And can't wait for 2.2
At this point if dells not releasing gingerbread on the streak soon I don't really care for this phone anymore.
@Apple Smasher
Gingerbread isn't even out yet. Froyo has only been official for a month. I think you're asking for a little too much.
2.2 is a must....not too sure about it being locked on AT&T.....
Still wouldn't get it. It's too little, too late. And being SIM locked just makes it even worse than it already is.
Archos 5 Internet Tablet is better than this, has better video support and is shipping for $219 without any subscription contracts required: http://www.jr.com/archos/pe/AHS_501308/
@Charbax I have the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. I wouldn't say better. It has a resistive screen, no front facing camera, no removable battery, no phone radios and 1.6 software with no upgrade so far since release.
Just got it 9am yesterday and getting to know this new device. It is a nice android phone. However, some of reviews said the sound from the speaker is not good, and I say yes it is really bad. My HTC tilt2 is much better. I wish they release 2.2 very soon. I already waited for this phone for too long.
@simplydata
Did it come with a backpack to haul it around?
@HighestRanked1
Yes, I expected it is big and it is very hard to use it with one hand. ; )
@HighestRanked1
That joke gets less funny every time I hear it ... and it wasn't even funny the first time.
I am interested in the Dell streak, but the fact that if i go to any other country... i cannot use it, makes it useless. I do not want to have to buy another phone for when i travel or go on vacation.
@brothaa
It is a quad band GSM phone. You can use it in any country - just have it unlocked and buy a sim when you get to your destination.
@brothaa
It should work in most countries. AT&T will charge you extra for international calling while you're on vacation but at least you have that option. CDMA phones just plain won't work except for Mexico and a limited number of other countries.
I hate how manufacturers think it's even a good option to put anything less than 2.0 on their devices. google needs to start enforcing standards. I understand they want to be open, but it's getting kind of ridiculous.
@iName
Makers are only compelled to look after their own interests and Google is simply looking the other way instead of enforcing.
@iName
The OS is open. The manufacturers can do whatever they want with it. If you want stricter control than you're going to have to look to iOS, Symbian, Bada or WP7 and forget about WinMo and Android. That's just how it is. Open source has it's advantages and disadvantages like anything else.
I'm here to tell ya your network isnt all that either, I havent had any problems with AT&T since 2003. I get tired of reading all the bashing about AT&T. Dont like the story go somewhere else, go buy your precious Droid x or HD2. No network is perfect and all you haters need to get a life. Most of you wouldnt have a 5 inch screen anyway, your just mad your network didnt get it so move on. I didnt get one because it wasnt sold in store for me to check out in my hands first before I lay down $300. When 2.2 releases and they sell these in store I'll get one unless something better comes out by then.
@Soldier1969
You read my mind. +1
Chance are, something better will come out before the Streak gets 2.2 and is sold in AT&T stores though. Wonder what the next contender will be.
@Frogboy
I hope there will be more companies willing to build phones with 5 inch screen.
I love this device because as an insane movie buff, I think this is the perfect size to still be portable, but still have a large enough screen to enjoy watching movies on.. I just wish people would STOP SKINNING ANDROID! This device (as well as most others) would be much better off with stock Android instead of their clunky skins!
@iBurley
"I just wish people would STOP SKINNING ANDROID!"
Why? The OEMs and carriers need to differentiate their products. Besides, nobody wanted a pure Android experience. If that was the case, everybody would've bought the N1.
@pika2000
I love the Nexus one, I was really looking forward to it coming to Verizon but Verizon denied it when HTC presented the Droid Incredible, but honestly, I would rather have the Nexus one, it is as close to Google as you can get, and you get Android updates first. I prefer greatly stock Android to all of these skins. HTC's Sense in the only acceptable one and I would still rather it be stock Android. Especially the Dell skin that makes it really awkward looking and seem very cynical instead of the fun Android experience I'm looking for.
@pika2000
Nobody wants stock Android because they aren't willing to pay an extra $330 for a phone that they can't even try out first? Whatever dude.
Can't one of these companies differentiate themselves *by* using stock Android. If no one else uses stock then it'd be like their own custom skin that they don't even need to code or maintain. They could even get updates out faster which would be a huge advantage. Why isn't anyone smart enough to do this?
Is this just Dell saying that the north American launch is delayed again? :(
FYI! Sound quality is very bad using its speaker. Try someone else Streak before buying one. Using earphone is reasonably good.
I have the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. I wouldn't say better. It has a resistive screen, no front facing camera, no removable battery, and 1.6 software with no upgrade so far since release.
@majortom333, Archos has released 18 firmware updates in the past 11 months since release and they are releasing a hardware update during the next few weeks. Archos is better for video playback, which is one of the two top most important features of such a tablet, video and web browsing.
@Charbax No major OS upgrades (say to 2.0, 2.1, or 2.2 rumoured but not seen yet), resistive screen, no camera, no phone, no removable battery, and lesser hardware specs. Sorry, I don't see that as a better choice. Guess it is fine if you just want to watch your vids.
Well, my old iPhone 3g was going to get replaced with a white 4 on launch day, then I saw only black was available so I tried to order that, then the sites all crashed, then I decided to wait for the white iphone, then it got delayed, and after all the iPhone mess I've lost interest. Don't get me wrong, I love my MB pro and my G4 desktop and even my 3G but my Streak will be here on Wednesday cause it's time to try something new and I really like the size of this phone.....Maybe I'll go back to the iPhone for number 5 and I can use my apps again, we'll see......
[Manufacturer] [Model] may get Android version [Name], 8/15 edition.
Of course the Streak sucks; it's made by Dell. EVERYTHING they make sucks. They're the new Acer, the Acer of 5-6 years ago, even while Acer themselves have been improving their build quality.
I think Dell laptops actually came in dead last in product reliability in the latest Consumer Reports issue.
I'm sure their phones are the same.
It won't be long before manufacturers realize that skins are a bad idea. Most add no value, and slow the upgrade path, so they are really a negative. I don't see why phones makers don't think that they can sufficiently differentiate their products with hardware. There are so many variables: Screen type, screen size, keyboard, camera, audio quality, battery life, wireless charging, fast charging, call quality, storage, CPU speed, CDMA/GSM, clamshell, candybar, slider, etc. Just make the hardware for the market niche and skip the skins.
Does it come with a defective mobo like the computers?
There is more than one way to skin an Android.
Is this phone actually for sale or not? I've checked a local store and called ATT telesales and they know nothing of it.
Why doesn`t Dell release this as an Android version of an iPod Touch ???
It would be perfect !
I`d buy a nav app for it so it would work off-grid.
Perfect for Nav...c-mon Dell.
Starbucks and McDonalds have free wifi now , and cellular data plans are turning into an overpriced joke.
WIFI is more important than ever now and there is a lot of free wifi.
Screw that...I`m getting a WP7 !
