Microsoft previews Windows Phone 7 app design process with a golfing scorekeeper (video)
You don't need us to tell you that apps have grown to become a core part of modern smartphone ecosystems. Android and iOS, the two major app-centric OS environments are growing in leaps and bounds, while a substantial part of Windows Phone 7's eventual success is expected to hinge on exactly how it matches (or betters) those guys on the app front. So, what better excuse than that to check out this concept golf scoring app from Redmond? Designed using Microsoft's favored Metro aesthetic, it really streamlines the user experience by employing "multiple touch targets [that] are spread out from one another" and distilling content down to large, easily readable data. We've got to say, it's hitting the right note with us, but do follow along after the break to learn about a few of the WP7 design quirks -- such as the drop-down system tray and the reason why rounded app icon corners are undesirable.

Golf FTL!
@rhimbu
As if we didn't already know that Bill Gates was retired.

media failure. yay
the phone mock up picture they have there is pretty hot i do have to say.
@KingpinEX
my exact sentiments. I want one.
@rhimbu
Nice App + Design!
@rhimbu
I wan't the white device in the first picture
@KingpinEX I have to say that it sux that all mock ups look better then actuall selling products
@KingpinEX
Yeah, I was about to say. What a sleek design. I'd buy it, providing the specs were decent!
@KingpinEX
Stole the words...
@huzzlehoff Look at this phone and the Evo side by side, and you'll see they're almost the same. Get an Evo instead.
@zuogolpon It will get boring, because majority of apps will look identical...
@KingpinEX agreed! before i read the title i thought it was a phone announcement.
i wish that hardware would become a reality
@KingpinEX
I agree. DO YOU HEAR THAT MICROSOFT? WE WANT THAT PHONE - with awesome specs! And I don't mind a phone version of Zune HD either
I honestly think this OS will do well
@AlienSix: I think it will be a distant third, but with the muscle of Microsoft behind it, it will be a viable platform for anyone who chooses it - and choice is always a good thing.
@AlienSix no multitasking = lame
@dagetz First 3 generations of the iOS would like a word with you
@AlienSix
Yes, it probably will. WP7 is a really nice-looking OS, at least. It has more polish than Android - my current OS of choice - and I like the minimalist look more than that of iPhone OS - though it seems it may launch behind in features.
Hopefully, Microsoft will open it up a bit and not limit it to being Windows-exclusive. I wouldn't mind giving Windows Phone 7 a whirl, but there's absolutely no way I'm jumping desktop OSes just to use a phone.
@Tubular Forget android, have you heard about Oracle suing Google over it? yeah but you think Google may pay some billions and get the license? oh sorry i should inform you Oracle is not after money, it would be hell entertaining to watch!
Also a not on WP7: it will be successful because Microsoft owns every technology in it from the ground to top, what does it mean? well it means too many different things that all of them will end up to WP7's success.
Muscle? Please, it's money not muscle - they have to buy their way in - it's the only way they'll get people to buy their crap - this POS OS is a huge fail
@arash I wouldn't be so quick to say MS owns everything bottom up. It depends on what the cross licensed from Sun to use in a VM. Anyway Oracle doesn't have much of a case. Thy are just trying to undo the open sourcing of Java which was done by Sun. It's too late for that. In fact Sun even congratulated Google on the launch of Android. Google wrote their own VM so there is nothing to license.
Cool. These guys are horrible demo guys though, they all stutter and can barely talk. yeesh, haha
@InnocentEd: They're devs, show some appreciation for the guys who actually do the hard work to make all the cool shit you use. Not all of us can be smooth salesmen types.
@tonicboy it was a joke, lol.
I work with devs every single day in the mobile world and I am friends with a lot of them....of course I appreciate everything that they do. I just thought it was funny. yeesh again, haha
I heard this is MS's last attempt at a mobile os. Are they aiming it at the untapped retired market, is a phone tax deductable if you are of 70 ?
@MikeGSY
No. But I bet you can get a good deal on a Jitterbug.
@MikeGSY
Nope - they are targeting executives - you know the guys who make decisions on budgets and technology.
You'll learn all about it once you leave high school and get a job.
couldn't they make a more.. fun app?
@keanu096
I am sure the MS game studios are taking care of that. Halo etc...
@keanu096 u mean.. put more candy and get stuff done more slowly?
cause whats zune interface is about: clean, sparse, quick, efficient
@zob ..or, perhaps..just about something a little bit more exciting than golf?
@zob on the contrary. going through lots of lists is not, quick. nor efficient.
@huskie fluff Really? have you ever worked with one? do you know you can hold the start button and SAY the app that you wanted to run to run?
@zob - Zune interface is: strange, counter-intuitive, futuristic for the sole purpose of being futuristic.
i like the look of the white phone in the picture.
Sounds fun...I love golf without the actual golfing :P
Pff, extremely boring, and i'm mobile developer who thinks about developing on win phone 7...
@Moze
No half-decent developer judges an entire platform by one random video, especially as multi-platforming theoretically increases profits. Most half-decent developers don't claim what they are on weblogs, they let their products precede them.
Says a lot about you then. Sucks how any kid nowdays with a fart app or whatever generic copy app for iOS/Android is now a "developer".
@Almo First i'm judging the video and not the platform.
Second i'm not "self employed" I work in company.
I really like the looks of it.
Now we just need some awesome hardware to compliment.
Simple, in my opinion to simple.
This app is presenting you a lot of information in a table view style. I think that iOS does it better. There are no seperation lines and everything is white. Too white. I am getting lost, really.
@rybek Do you also need someone to hold your hand when you goto the bathroom? Typically, bathrooms have white walls. Do you get lost in them as well?
I wonder how MS is suppose to get a jump back onto the mobile bandwagon with so many folks already pimping android.
@pspitts There's this thing. Where a huge number of people don't yet actually own smartphones. And even if they do, their contracts expire at some point in time or they just want a new phone. Sure Android and iOS are running things right now, but there's totally a market for an OS with multiple handsets without the fragmentation. And Xbox Live.
It is a cool example of how brands can make apps that integrate into the phone really well.
About the system tray... whether or not it is a problem will remain to be seen. But atleast they give developers notice of things that can be a problem, instead of a certain other company that always tries to pass off possible problems as non existing.
Wow that white phone looks fantastic.
I want to be an early adopter, but damn I'll miss out on some great hardware if I am.
Its a shame microsoft have pitched their flag and claimed the sharp square and clean UI aesthetic. This is surely territory that apple were hoping to move towards and it would have fit much better with the look and feel of the iPhone 4. Much as I kinda love what windows have come up with I cant help feeling a bit nervous they might mess it up.
On a completely unrelated topic... whose player is the first video using - looks a lot nicer than the embedded YouTube one.
