Maxell announces "archival-quality" DVD-Rpro discs
Remember when CDs first came out and the media industry told us that they were indestructible and would last forever? Well, they're at it again. As more consumers become savvy about the limited lifespans of most CDs and DVDs,
manufacturers are pushing new discs (at premium prices, of course) that they claim will still be readable when your great grandchildren find them in the attic. The latest entrant is Maxell's new DVD-Rpro, which, like the company's CD-Rpro, uses a proprietary coating to protect the discs from the elements. We can't vouch for the veracity of Maxell's claims, though we are impressed at the chutzpah of the Maxell flack who sent us a press release with the subject line "DVD that will outlive us." Somehow, we can't think of a really good way to test that claim.
