Philips to introduce theft-proof display system
Monitors used to be the last piece of equipment companies had to worry about when it came to sticky-fingered employees. After all, they were big and bulky, and had a resale value that was usually far lower than that of the computers they were connected to. LCD displays have changed all that and monitor producers are starting to respond.
Later this year, Philips will launch what it calls SmartManage technology, which will let network managers track displays. Designed for large corporations, the Altiris-based system will also allow remote configuration of monitor features (such as power-saving functions) and will notify an administrator (or security) and disable displays if they're removed from a network. Looks like pretty soon the only thing would-be pilferers will be able to lift from the office will be the stapler (though we're sure someone's working on a USB-tethered version that'll have embedded security software).
