The earth rotates... why shouldn't your monitor?
Rumor has it (yeah, I hate rumors, but this is one of those not really a rumor kind of rumors) that Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger, in case you've just come out of a 2-year coma) has built-in support for rotating displays – or Pivot if you, too, are nostalgic for those glorius Radius days – which hasn't been available in an OEM OS X installation yet (although ATI has had VersaVision for their retail cards for some time now).
An anonymous, NDA-violating tipster tells XLR8YourMac's Mike Breeden:
"Mike, I haven't heard anything about this in playing with a pre-release version of Tiger, I noticed that in the Display control panel you can now rotate the screen 90, 180, or 270 degrees! Worked on an Apple supplied ATI 9600 Pro card (non-retail)..."
Looking back at the archives, Gregory Han actually posted about this rumor a full year ago when Apple's patent for this technology came to light and my current co-blogger Scott hinted at it just a few weeks ago. But you all know what a big fan of recycling I am, right?
I
don't know about you, but I am really jonesing to have this feature back. I'm not a designer or a desktop publisher so it's not like it's critical for me. It's just one of those cool features I always liked having in the old days and I've been jealous that Windows XP (yuk)
supports it out of the box while Mac OS X was left pivotally-challenged.
