Battle vs. Chess sets up September 28 release gambit

Southpeak has announced that its chess title, Battle vs Chess (which is totally not Battle Chess) is headed to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 28. Much like Interplay's classic game of nearly the same name, Battle vs Chess lets players compete in the ancient strategy game using animated pieces. Battle vs Chess also includes several different gameplay modes, including a campaign mode and puzzle mode which house "over 50 puzzles and scenarios." Another mode allows players to manually place pieces, which can only be seen by the opponent after the game begins.

The PC version will retail for $20, while the Xbox and PlayStation 3 versions will be available for $40. Meanwhile, the Wii, DS and PSP versions are slated to be released in the first quarter of 2011 with prices still under wraps for now.

BATTLE vs. CHESS MOVES TO ASTONISH PLAYERS

Innovative Reinvention of the Classic Strategy Game Receives Release Date

MIDLOTHIAN, VA - August 31, 2010 – Leading videogame publisher, SouthPeak Games, today announced that its inventive strategy game Battle vs. Chess will ship to retailers on September 28, 2010. Developed by TopWare Interactive and Gaijin Entertainment, Battle vs. Chess redefines what chess is and can be. Although the 'classic' game of chess remains at the core of the game, players will experience not only the pieces on the board coming to life through fantastic animation in a battle between darkness and light, but also innovative new game modes, puzzles and story-driven campaigns. These twists offer players a range of challenges delivering a strategy game experience like no other.

Battle vs. Chess includes new variations in piece placement such as 'Madness Placement' where pieces are randomly placed all across the board and 'Tactical Placement' in which pieces are manually placed by the player pre-game, only becoming visible to the opponent once the game starts. Battle vs. Chess also includes over 50 puzzles and scenarios which can be found in a full-featured Campaign Mode and a bonus Puzzle Mode. Finally, Battle vs. Chess includes several modes which challenge players to throw the traditional strategies of the game out the window and defeat one another in full-on head to head battles in 'Slasher' and 'Duel' modes.

"Chess is one of the oldest competitive games in the world and has a huge global fan-base. Battle vs. Chess breathes new life and new game-play into a game that has thrilled millions of players over the years," said SouthPeak Product Manager Jonathan Rosales, "with the innovations that Battle vs. Chess brings to the table, a full-fledged tutorial system for new players and the utilization of both the Fritz 11 chess engine and a corresponding real-world ranking system, Battle vs. Chess is sure to give gamers of all ages and experience new and original challenges."

Battle vs. Chess is set to ship to retailers on PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC on September 28, 2010. It is rated T for Teen by the ESRB and comes with a suggested retail price of $39.99 for consoles and $19.99 for Windows PC.
