Defense Grid: Containment set for Jan. 23 launch

Defense Grid: Containment, originally expected in December, now has a solid release date of January 23. Containment is an expansion to the tower defense game Defense Grid: The Awakening.

It includes 8 levels that bridge the gap between The Awakening and its upcoming sequel, and features voice work from Ming-Na Wen of ER (and Mulan) fame, as well as Alan Tudyk of being Alan Tudyk fame. Furthermore, Containment includes four user-created maps chosen from the Defense Grid community.

Last year, Containment began as a Kickstarter project to help fund Defense Grid 2. While the project did surpass its $250,000 goal, it never hit the cool $1 million that developer Hidden Path sought to fully fund a sequel. Project backers will still receive Defense Grid 2 whenever it is completed.

Containment will be available on Steam for $5 individually, or as part of a bundle with Defense Grid and all of its DLC for $20.

Defense Grid: Containment Coming January 23rd

All-New Levels, Characters and Story Expand the Defense Grid Universe

BELLEVUE, Wash., January 16, 2013 -- Independent developer Hidden Path Entertainment today announced Defense Grid: Containment will be available for download on Steam on January 23, 2013, for $4.99. The entire Defense Grid: Containment bundle (all Defense Grid content to date) will be available for $19.99.

Defense Grid: Containment is the all-new expansion to the award-winning, tower defense game Defense Grid: The Awakening. Built from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Defense Grid: Containment provides players with many hours of new content including eight new maps, a new story, two new characters (voiced by Firefly's Alan Tudyk and E.R.'s Ming-Na Wen), and 32 new challenge modes. DG:Containment's storyline picks up right where The Awakening left off, and leads the player on a new adventure that opens up exciting future possibilities.

From the start, Containment has been a collaborative project with partners, backers, and players. It began the summer of 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign. Partners Razer and AMD supplied top backer rewards and helped incorporate new technology and features into the game. Supporters from all over the world, from game industry luminaries to fans of Defense Grid contributed to the making of Defense Grid: Containment.

The Defense Grid community's involvement went well beyond just funding the project. As part of the Kickstarter rewards, backers gained access to a private discussion forum that allowed them to submit ideas for Containment and future titles, and have them reviewed and voted on by their peers. One of the digital rewards for backers was a Level Previewer which gave users the power to design their own Defense Grid levels and submit them to the team at Hidden Path.

Hidden Path's Defense Grid team chose four user-created levels by community members to feature in a unique additional treat: Defense Grid Community Levels. This additional content will also be available on January 23rd, in exchange for player email registration.

Defense Grid: Containment is just the latest chapter to Defense Grid: The Awakening. Joining previous map expansions Borderlands, Resurgence, and You Monster, Containment adds new environments and modes of play, requiring new strategies to beat back the aliens and defend humanity. Frequently cited as the best tower defense game available and one of the 25 highest rated games by users on Xbox LIVE Arcade, Defense Grid is for many the definitive tower defense experience.
