New York Congressman knows what the kids like: Trump GIFs

Remember last week when Speaker of the House John Boehner was raked over the coals for reducing a complex political argument to a series of glib Taylor Swift GIFs? Well, now it's New York representative Charlie Rangel's turn. The apparent congressman for life posted a direct response to Speaker Boehner's attack on Obama's free college plan, with a series of GIFs of his own -- these ones featuring Donald Trump. Does the congressman have some salient points about the benefits of making higher education more affordable and accessible? Probably. Are those points lost among a sea of head scratch-inducing GIFs? Yes. Like Boehner and others before him, the seemingly undefeatable Rangel (even in the face of multiple ethics violations and scandals) made the mistake of putting virality ahead of content.

To make matters worse, the collection of Trump GIFs just completely misses the mark. Sure, Boehner's Swift GIFs were glib, but at least he had the decency to tap into current pop culture trends. In fact, it's pretty hard to get more popular than Taylor Swift right now. Hell, this is the woman who decided to stop playing ball with streaming services like Spotify and still managed to have the only platinum selling album in 2014.

Rangel's "9 Donald Trump GIFs for you, Mr. Speaker," on the other hand, probably only resonates with the few people left who unironically watch The Apprentice. (Pretty sure millennials don't even ironically watch The Apprentice.) Instead it comes off like a bumbling attempt to get in with the cool kids. Trump is simply not as culturally relevant. He's even somewhat of a laughing stock among his friends at Fox News at this point. And while some of the connections between Boehner's statements and the Swift reaction GIFs were thin, at least there was one. (Seriously, what's with the cat Trump at the end congressman?)

Here's one Conan O'Brien GIF for Representative Rangel.
