If you haven't downloaded and installed iOS 8.3 yet, you might want to hold off for a bit first. Apple says the update packs that new emoji keyboard and a slew of performance fixes, but multiple reports on Reddit, Twitter and Apple's own support forums claim that the new software build basically breaks TouchID support for iTunes and App Store purchases. It's not yet clear how widespread the issue is -- Twitter in particular is light on the moaning today -- but we've just installed iOS 8.3 on a pair of iPhone 6s on different carriers and now neither of them work the way they're supposed to.
Never fear: You can still download to your heart's desire by punching in your password, and the fingerprint sensor still works just fine for unlocking your device or authenticating an Apple Pay transaction. Still, affected users have tried all the usual tricks -- restarting their devices, toggling the appropriate settings -- and they're never even prompted for the usual finger identification when trying to buy some new content. What's more, the issue seems to have taken hold of users across multiple carriers who have installed the update over-the-air and via iTunes. We're sifting through the reports to see if there's any rhyme or reason to who gets inconvenienced by the issue, and we've reached out to Apple for comment in case they feel like shedding any light on the matter -- stay tuned for more as we get it.
Update: And just like that, the issue seems to have cleared up without the need for an update, or even a public announcement. It's likely that Apple fixed the problem server-side, but regardless, happy downloading.
