Smart's diminutive vehicles will all have EV options in 2017
With a respectable 99-mile range.
Smart's teeny-tiny and highly parkable vehicles aren't exactly known for their highway speeds, but they do make sensible grocery-getters for city folk with limited space. So it makes sense that the next model year from Mercedes-Benz's pint-sized line will offer an electric version as an option on every single vehicle.
As TechCrunch reports, the EV Smart cars will be available on the Fortwo, Fortwo Cabrio and Forfour models, but owners shouldn't expect to set any records for EV range – the 17.6 kWh capacity battery is good for around 99 miles. On the other hand, that'll cover more ground than Volkswagen's E-Golf, in a slightly smaller package. With such a small battery, the charge time is also a relatively quick two-and-a-half hours using standard outlets.
There's no pricing for the EV models yet, but the Fortwo Electric Drive is expected to be available in spring 2017, with the drop-top Cabrio coming in time for summer.
