The MacBook Pros, when running in windows, are actually quite capable gaming machines, and if you can get it with the student discount, quite a good deal comparativley. I have the cheapest model, and it runs C & C III with most graphic options set to high and Hellgate at medium-high.

Sager is literally the worst laptop company I have ever worked with. Not only did my computer, the NP4881 break a whopping 5 times in the first year of ownership, but don't forget that you have to mail it in yourself every time, and pay for shipping. Not to mention that it now refuses to charge up a battery AND sager now refuses to service some of the parts of the machine, because they are, in fact, out of stock. STEER CLEAR OF SAGER. IF ITS ONE THING IVE LEARNED FROM MY EXPERIENCE ITS GO WITH A NAME BRAND AND GET THE EASE OF MIND THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SERVICE YOUR COMPUTER TWO OR THREE YEARS DOWN THE ROAD.
For $399, the Asus eeePC is a nice, hackable machine. Comes with Xandros Linux, but XP and other *nix flavors are more-or-less compatible, for the earnest young hacker to try. There's even reports of OSX running on it.
For roughly the same price range, the Sanyo Xacti camcorder makes decent videos for the YouTube crowd. Just make sure you have a lot of light.
I'd still take the Premium over Arcade anyday, and poor PS3 and Wii (although on sales pretty much everyone must have one...) =P
Well, um, I'm quite sure 'most' boys wouldn't want an eeePC.
If they're the computer user I think most boys are, they're going to want to install games from time to time, be able to use some of the same programs that their friends do, and honestly prefer Windows to Linux, as far as I know, most boys aren't hackers.
The eeePC might be good for a geeky type person, that doesn't mind cheap, but most boys will seriously not want an eeePC.
That's the way I see it, in my opinion.
hey im a boy who loves my eeepc, well...technically a boy if you define it as still under parents command. There are ways to install games from time to time that you want, maybe not the newest baddest most insane detail game out there but age of empires or starcraft, which is good enough for me. it just takes a little work to put on but im sure if they try hard enough they'll get it on, i did.
Also, its perfect to get kids motivated to take notes in school, all my teachers love to see me with my little laptop taking notes, but the only problem is if the class gets too boring and you decide to "take notes" if you know what i mean.
This is good enough for a kid, as long as they aren't a hardcore gamer, but even if they are im sure they will have a system to make up for it

I'm pretty sure anyone could admit that there are much better games currently out on the 360 compared to the ps3. Not only that, most multi platform games look best on the 360.

You know... I have all three playstations, and an xbox 360. I only bought the xbox 360 about three months ago, from there on I've been happy. Me, my premium, and HD DVDs. OMFG! So many more features and good games, not to mention Halo 3! Dude, 360 is so much better. Sony has pleased me until now. And XBL has awesome DLC center for GH3, Halo 3, Burnout, etc. I'm not denying people may like a ps3 better than a 360, but I don't. Hey... Shouldn't all three consoles be up there (Wii and Playstation 3 left out. I truly have nothing AGAINST them, besides their lack of features.)?

why not an iPod touch?? I got one yesterday for my birthday and my wants for an iPhone were actually slowed because I didn't expect the wifi to be this amzing I mean, I've never been able to comment on engadget from my bed. I agree with jeromy. I'm typing this on my iPod touch and I think it works beautifuly as a web browser. Although I wouldn't give up my laptop for it its good enough for the casual web browser or youtube surfer.
I think he is comparing the iPod touch to the chumby or the eeepc, Obviously a laptop is a lot better but is usually more expensive for something that is decent. The ipod touch offers music, vidoe, web browsing and is portable for a price that more friendly to parents.
I _would_ be typing this from my iPT, but my means of wireless access is a mac mini. And iPT's very picky wifi behavior doesn't even like the mini one bit. All it'll let me have is google for some reason.
(Clarification: the mini acts as an access point with internet sharing enabled -- it doesn't like my wireless router either. Sucks)

lol... A3 pwns an iPod easily. woot! I'm a big A2 fan, but even I was surprised to see the A3 up there. It's good to see Cowon getting some lovin' even though they still haven't ditched the cumbersome joystick. Regardless, A3 is also nicer than the Clix, since the clix only has up to 8GB storage and a 2.2" screen.

if you didn't notice, this is a list of gifts "off the beaten path." ie, other than psp ds ipod or a cell phone.
although, xbox probably shouldn't be on this list. I would have put instead the limited edition halo 3 controller or some other novelty like the mentioned wii zapper, or for that matter, a wii.
As for cameras, keep in mind that these are for kids; I don't think an exilim would be as much as a utillity as say, an olympus 790sw or some other everything-proof camera.

I've had my Xbox 360 for two years and never had an issue with it. I can't think of a reason not to get one at this point, unless you can find a Wii, then i'd go for that.

Im so glad jeremy is happy with his ipod touch. Im getting one for my birthday on the 20th and im so exciting. Just sittin on the couch with my ipod surfing the internet!!!
