Dell gets "official" with colorful Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptop lines
Not like Dell's done an exceptional job keeping this one a secret, but yes, the Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops do seem to be more than a figment of someone's imagination -- at least, according to a believable release posted up at BetaNews, which has since been pulled. Predictably, the former line features a 15-inch panel while the latter steps up to 17-inches, and both crews will be offered in a smattering of hues including black, grey, blue, green, pink, orange, purple and red. Prices on these units are set to start at $799, while you'll find Intel's Core 2 Duo alongside up to 4GB of RAM, upwards of 320GB of HDD space, an 8-in-1 multicard reader, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, an optional Blu-ray drive and the usual assortment of ports. Folks looking to stay connected around the clock can opt for a Sprint / Verizon WWAN card, and there's also an optional 9-cell battery if the standard 6-cell just isn't longevous enough. Check out two more shots after the break, and the original page (in three parts) in the gallery below.

WOOHOOO!!! Finally!!!
Oh wait... I just bought a 1520 6 months ago.
DAMMIT!!!
Color me impressed. I only wish they offered smaller models, a 12" perhaps for the ultraportable lover in me.
E Slim.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/12/dell-e-and-e-slim-revealed-taking-on-eee-and-air-in-one-fell-sw/
The link is dead, the page doesn't exist on the site
With the Dell E, the new Studio line, the Vostro line (they're really solid little computers), and Alienware/XPS bringing it home for high end... Dell seems to be doing everything right these days.
Except the phonecalls to India for tech support.
So I guess I should say they're doing everything right for PC users who know what they're doing already.
XPS customers don't have their calls answered by people in India.
Stop badmouthing India. Just for the record, how many of you idiots have actually spoken to someone in India and had an experience worse than talking to novice, untrained IT staff in the US. If your IT company hired idiots, you'll speak to idiots. Don't blame India, blame Dell.
And if you have a problem, call me, I'll fix your computer for free, and do it well. And yes, I'm in India.
How about you shut the F*ck up? All he said was expect your calls go to to India. How is stating a fact badmouthing someone?
Having to explain your problems (in English) ten times to someone who doesn't speak English is extremely annoying.
"Dell seems to be doing everything right these days. Except the phonecalls to India for tech support."
Please read the first word in that quote ten times. Then read the rest of the quote. Sounds to me like he's blaming Dell, *NOT* India.
You must be one of Dells outsourced tech support workers, because 1, you got way too upset over him stating a fact, and 2, your English sucks if you couldn't tell that he didn't insult India in his post.
@Nonedone
Relax, buddy. Yes, I HAVE actually called and spoken to Dell's tech support in India. It was terrible. But nobody is badmouthing the intellect or ability of a trained tech support agent in your country. Unfortunately, Dell seems to prefer handing their "specialists" slips of paper with troubleshooting advice that could just as easily be found using the "help" button in Windows. People in India aren't unintelligent, it's that the people Dell hire from India are unqualified (and I'm sure much cheaper than well trained techs) and unable to really help anyone with advanced tech problems.
Relaaaaaax.
"Just for the record, how many of you idiots have actually spoken to someone in India and had an experience worse than talking to novice, untrained IT staff in the US."
The last time I used Dell support I could understand about 1 out of every 10 word the person was saying. In fact, if I didn't have an extremely intimate knowledge of the topic, there would have been no chance of me being able to communicate with her. I am not sure she was from india though, sounded more like Malaysia.
Having said that, have never had a problem with Dell computers themselves, very reliable and the studio line seems like it might actually look half-decent as well for a change.
release date??
Should be an good alternative for those who aren't willing to spend more on a Macbook Pro.
You just had to say it, didn't you?
Not unless they offer an Ubuntu option promptly. Windows is no substitute for a Real operating system like OSX.
Yeah I might sell up my MBP and get one of these...
Let me know when they are really for sale. All this is is vaproware teasers for now.
Finally.
I've been waiting for this ever since they (mostly) axed dedicated graphics from the inspiron line, probably they'll offer dedicated graphics as an upgrade option for the studio line. At the moment you have to go for an XPS, vostro, or the 17in inspiron to get a proper graphics chip. Usually it's only an extra $100 more or so for an Nvidia or ATI solution on those models too so there's really no excuse to so severely limit the functionality of your computer by getting an integrated chip. Macbooks, I'm looking at you.
What's the weight of these laptops?
Doesn't run OS X. What a waste.
AC, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
OSX can't handle this hardware, and that is Apple's fault, not Dell's. Watch who you call a waste.
Actually, I imagine it does run OSX. With a little bit of work. None of my Dell laptops have ever failed to run OSX86.
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I like the naming scheme. The average person never knew if a 1520 was better than a 680 and all that jazz.
Looks like they finally learned from Apple.
I hope they provide Ubuntu option beside those Vista Home and Ultimate which are useless...
Definitely.
*Head explodes*
....or you could just install ubuntu yourself?
Yeah really, just install it yourself. Quite frankly, there are not more people who want Ubuntu on their computer than there are people who want Windows of some kind. (my laptop dual-boots Ubuntu and XP but I pretty much only use XP nowadays, even ignoring the fact that I can be more productive in XP, its a better choice for me because it's stable and Ubuntu isn't and I'm really not willing to spend the time to sort out the various shitty drivers which make it unstable)
A pox on Dell and their TrueLife only consumer notebooks! Give me the frickin' *option* of a matte screen!!!
Ubuntu please Micheal. Stop arseing around with only a few machines that are more expensive that the Windows ones.
People who are saying it won't run OSX?
STFU. It is a proprietary piece of software that is just as bad as Windows.
Ubuntu still sucks.
Oh my goodness. More fools who have never used Vista !!
I have used OSX and Vista. OSX sucks a big dick. Steve knows it...
That is EXACTLY the reasons why Steve (blow) Jobs allowed Windows to be loaded in Apple machines. Because he knows that OSX sucks and that he can only sell Apple PC's with only OSX loaded to complete morons.
So, he bamm !!! he facilitated Windows to be able to be loaded on Apple machines and bammmm, there you go!!! An Apple PC running Vista - a proper user friendly operating system. There is no argument here, ipso factum (let the facts speak for themselves - moron !!).
I have some sympathy for those who own Apple PC's (and they are PC's - no different from an IBM) and who run Windows. But really there is no excuse for not buying a Voodoo Envy now or a Dell.
BTW
[[ I frickin hate that power cord on the back of my mac, it falls out all the time - firckin magnet crap ]]
[[and...how do you hide icons on the desktop with OSX - do you have to install 3rd party software ? --> I can do it in Vista in 2 clicks ]]
And all the Apple fanatics can now blame Intel for all their hardware problems such as system lockups, systems failing to come out of sleep, systems falling asleep, etc.

You hate Apple, but you own a Mac, that makes a lot of sense.
It takes three clicks... Right click on icon>hide>apply
Calling you OSX morons....!!1
Another question for you morons...
Why do you think that Steve Jobs sues these poor little companies that make PC's to install OSX ??
No !! wrong moron....it is not because he is a mean maniacal git. That was unkind of you to even think.
The reason is the same reason that ugly girls don't go to the prom; because he knows that nobody would buy OSX to put on them. Everyone would then see OSX for the crap that it is.
Talk about the Emperer's new clothes. Steve Jobs is NAKED !!!!!!
OSX is a pig with Lipstick. Or of you like, OSX is the dumb Blond.
Whilst Vista is the sexy smart brunette.
The only reason morons bought Apple PC's was coz they were deluded by flash aluminum and turtle neck sweaters.
Now the Voodoo Envy is here for the wealthy like me, and that Dell's are here for those less fortunate, Steve is low on scams.
The end of Apple... I don't think so... he will always find another moron.
[There will be no peace, so long as they keep on sh1tting in our shoes and we keep p1ssing in their bovril ]
...You really need a hobby.

However, you are the one who used to words "Hate Apple", not me.
I hate it when I stubb my toe. I hate it when the frickin pwoer cord keeps on coming out the back of the PC.
I don't even hate Mugabe. I dislike Margaret Thatcher a lot. I really don't care for Bush. I don't trust McCain. But I hate no one. Truly.
* But there seems to be a lot of venom in some of your comments to say otherwise

* Maybe you should put your Mac up for sale.
I'm thinking this guy is trying to justify to himself that vista was actually a good buy
me: *click*
vista: *you clicked something, are you sure that was what you intended?*
me: *yes*
vista: *this requires admin privileges*
me: *ok*
vista: *you clicked something, are you sure that was what you intended?*
me: FFS, I'm going to install OSX, or *buntu, or BSD, or ANYTHING BUT YOU
:-p (I don't much care for vista, and yes I know you can turn UAC off. I would much prefer buntu/osx's sudo mechanism any day. it is more reassuring to have to insert a password to activate a secure feature than just clicking *continue* - mainly because it stops idiotic blind-clicking where you've become so trained to click "ok" or "continue" to do something that should be locked away)
How the.... how the hell did this blog post attract so many Apple fanboys?
because "apple fanboy" had become synonymous with anyone who uses a mac apparently
This is not just ahobby, this is a mission;
to right the wrongs of the Apple morons, lest they infest more decent people and turn them into mindless morons also
Fight the good fight, with all thy might !! We are the force of good against Evil. The Evil Naked Emperor, Jobs will never win.
You really are a crazy and random person.
Even though this kccboy2004 guy's comment is "over the top", there is some truth to what he wrote. Apple has done evil things such as bullying amateur journalists and website owners but people quickly dismisses and forgets that because Apple fanboism is cool nowadays. By contrast, people has never forgiven Sony for causing the shutdown of Lik-Sang. Is this selective memory or double-standard? Probably both. BTW, regarding OSX, I'll give it respect when it can actually support hundreds of thousands of hardware and can accomodate the requirements and needs of enterprise and businesses. If ever OSX reaches that level, let's see if it'll still be so stable and secure.
Nice... now to decide: Dell Studio 15 or HP dv5t?
Like BMW and Porsche fanboys, Apple has its fanboys (and girls). You don't say bad things without offending them. When you pay so much for a computer compared to Windows/Linux PCs you gotta' defend your choices.
There are numerus compliants about unreliable Mac hardware and buggy software at macintouch.com.
@Rick you talk a lot of sense. I don’t agree with all of your posts entirely. But you are sound as a pound. You could be a little more venomously polarised from my standpoint, but you can’t be perfect.
If there was still doubt that kccboy is just trolling, there you go. STOP FEEDING HIM
Dell needs to change the font on their logo and remove the circle.

No 802.11n? Awww.
These notebooks will be released on Thursday June 26th 2008.
Its now 26th June and no Studio laptops, tsk tsk DelllnSide, ur info seems somewhat wrong
What happened to the back lit keyboard? and the mac style keys? and the 14inch version...seriously now...wtf? I wait and wait and wait and in the end they puss out and come out with the same ugly crap.
If I read the press release correctly it's "up to" not "upwards of" 320GB of HDD.
it's funny actually, all the Apple lovers out there can only say "what, no OS X?" whereas, Apple, as usual, is being killed on the hardware front. Believe me, Vista is half way decent. I have not found any real problem with Vista other then driver issues, but that was fixed with the latest drivers. And honestly, who wants to spend more money than they have to?
no, not all apple lovers say that.
i prefer OSX, and i hate those posters as much as you.
pc users have the fanatics too.
"oh, its an apple, must suck."
theres ignorance on both sides.
and for all the idiots saying OSX cant handle hardware...
do you honestly even know what youre talking about?
mac pros arent exactly hardware lacking.
and mac servers?
and people seem top forget OSX is unix with a visual cap.
but how often does unix get bashed?
hating something simply because it is a trend
doesnt exactly scream intelligence.
I should think they are official - the last computer mag I picked up (UK) had a double-page Dell ad in the front cover, with one of the pages devoted to the Studio line. No prices or specs, but the name and photos like those on this website.
So you can view them on Dell's site but you are unable to build one still. Hopefully that will be fixed by today.
Hi everyone. I have worked for Dell India and have taken many calls for the UK consumers. I think they are very polite people and they don't mind speaking with people in India. From what I hear the Americans are as friendly and polite, if not friendlier. I don't see what the problem is.
As far as the language gap goes, yes it can be a bit annoying but then Americans don't have to pay a cent for calling Dell Tech. The English don't seem to mind, atleast 85% don't mind and Dell is always trying to train their techs on accents so eventually the customer is happy.
However, I must admit that language can be considered as quite a barrier because there were times people wouldn't understand me even though we managed to give them a speedy solution.
So it is not always a case of your problem being resolved in quick time. Sometimes they would just like to speak with people who speak good english rather than someone who's in india who's just sitting back taking calls.
I feel Dell needs to change the process of renumeration a tad bit.
About XPS support being non-indian - I don't think the statement is entirely untrue. However, the emailing bit is handled by Indians. I don't work for Dell anymore but they're a great, great company and they truly care for their consumers without a single doubt in my mind.
I also feel not a lot of people from ireland, england and america can actually do this job with basic skill and training. So if the common man cannot do the thing, they have to PAY MORE for experts who are willing to sit for hours and hours. It is much cheaper for Dell to start this in our country. I think it costs them 30% as much and reaps only more and more benefits in the long run.
The occasional disgruntled customer has nowhere to go though so it's the best and worst of both worlds, I guess.
SIDENOTE : To Dell, Im sorry if I have given away too much info.
