Motorola's first Android phone to be the T-Mobile G1 v2?
Okay, so T-Mobile confirmed on Saturday that it's launching "multiple" Android devices from "three partners" later this year, and since most people assume the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / whatever and the Samsung I7500 are pretty much locked in, speculation has generally centered around that mysterious G1 v2 and the identity of the third partner -- and it looks like it's going to be Motorola. Not only did commenter Someperson notice that the button labels on the alleged G1 v2 are basically identical to those on other recently-launched Moto phones, Boy Genius Report says today that they can "more or less confirm" the v2 will be Schaumburg's first Android set -- a development that lines up perfectly with last month's rumors of a slider QWERTY piece. Yep, it all fits together nicely, except for the fact that HTC is oddly out of the loop on the sequel to the G1 -- but since T-Mobile owns that particular trademark, it can do whatever it wants, you know? Hopefully we'll find out more soon -- if that sketchy leaked roadmap is correct, we'll be seeing this guy in the fall.
Update: Or... the G1 v2 could really be the Samsung Bigfoot. It's a mystery for now, we'll let you know.

The only issue here is, this would imply that Motorola is capable of making a phone without shoving a giant ^^ somewhere.
(Yes, I realize the Motorola logo is not actually the ^^ smiley but is in fact intended to be a stylized M)
The M is actually indented into the glass on this screen and you can feel it as you rub your thumb across the screen.
Unfortunately it is not visible in this shot.
While it's great more companies are embracing Android, there needs to be some quality control going on.... we don't want another Windows Mobile... hell, we don't even want Windows Mobile in general
I love WinMo and Android.
Can someone love an OS without hating another?
Really though, who is "we?"
i like windows mobile
it supports tons of software the other's dont have
such as GIS, mapping software, and lots of advanced features that... well will never even hit the Iphone for example. Hopefully there will be some for Android.
i am not too sure on symbian, does anyone know if symbian has support for high end mapping gis/ software?
Come on guys, nobody can really "love" windows mobile, I like it, I use it every day, and I still hate it. I cannot wait for moto to realease a great qwerty slider with android and a cap touch screen.
WinMo, as capable as it is, is showing it's age and it's clunky and unstable and microsoft refuses to update at the pace the rest of the industry is keeping, so when he says "we" he at least means me and him.
i am not looking farward to any new HTC phone
they all have no headphone jacks
I am sorry but if i am buying a phone thats basically a laptop, for 600-700$, you put a headphone jack. I am not dealing with an adapter after paying that money.
i was really looking farward to the TP2, but now has no interest. I am not gona be that (guy) who is plugging 2 things in just to play a song.
Or you can choose to plug nothing and use A2DP.
It might be on the back of the phone, similar to the iPhone.
Personally, I've never found the size of Motorola's logo to be any bigger than the size of that forbitten (typo intended) fruit on any phone in existance.
It was meant to be a reply to Epsilon's first comment. I'm pretty sure I clicked the reply button. Oh Well!
Nobody may reply to my comment! Muahahaha!
Well, I do have to admit that Motorola isn't the only company to make sure their logo is as in-your-face as possible... I mean, Apple is really in a category of their own in this regard. (Who else makes their logo glow? Though not on the iPhone, admittedly)
Who else has glowing logos? Some of the HP laptops have a glowing "HP" logo.
Seriously? Huh, I guess I haven't seen those laptops before...
I think the G1 v2 will be made by Samsung because the picture in the sketchy leaked roadmap is the same as in the leaked slide from a Dutch dealer event. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/03/18/leaked-slide-reveals-samsung-going-big-with-touchphones-in-09/
It's a really nice looking phone in my opinion, but I just pray that Motorola won't ruin it with sub-par specs.
On the contrary, the Samsung i7500 is looking promising hardware wise but I don't think I'd be able to live without a physical keyboard. Nothing against people that are fine with the virtual one, it's just that I feel like I text so slow with software keyboards.
Motorola's phones are designed in Libertyville not the corporate headquarters in Schaumburg.
Wasn't the new HTC 'G2' being relabeled as the MyTouch anyway? Maybe T-Mobile are calling this the G2 to keep some sort of sliding keyboard identification with the G'x' branding.
A decent Moto phone after a very long time!
If this is a Motorola device, it really could put them back into the ball game. It will also be nice, to have a selection of Android devices from different vendors. They all tend to put their own spin on things.
I haven't had a ton of phones, but my two phones prior to my current htc were by moto and they held up quite nicely. My current slider htc phone feels like it's going to fall apart, and I'm pretty gentle with it. Anyone have any thoughts (data?) on build quality of moto vs htc?
Plus, I second the annoyance of not having a headphone jack... yet another reason why I didn't get the G1.
It looks like a promising phone. Certainly better than other moto phones I've seen (or the previous moto android concept ideas that were leaked). But, there's still not enough details about THIS phone to know if it's going to be viable or not.
5 row keyboard?
3.5mm jack?
battery life?
is that a dpad at the left end of the keyboard?
etc.
I'm glad my point was finally realized. I, aka ChrisHansen, will look forward to this phone.
This is the G1 V2 the G2 is all touchscreen no sliding qwerty.
If this rumor about this Motorola being the G1 v2 is true, we can surely say motorola is save from bankruptcy!
The still-profitable cable box and such business is another reason for Moto to be safe from bankruptcy :P
Yes. Welcome back Motorola. Now if only they could make a dual hinge QWERTY Android RAZR....
Looks like Moto's last chance to get back in business.
Back in 2003, Moto was among the first to come up with a decent WinMo phone with the excellent MPX200 and I certainly hope they will do the same with the Android platform.
