PSP Go box design lends more credibility to slim PS3 rumors

Remember when those slim PS3 shots came out and skeptics bemoaned the missing "spiderman font" as proof of mischief? Well, if you believe that the PSP Go is a lock, and really, at this point there's no reason to doubt it, then a side-by-side shot of the PSP Go and slim PS3 box art should be quite revealing... and it is. Note the similar font, horizontal band, and general placement of device specs like memory capacity. Pretty similar, thus giving the slim PS3 rumor that much more weight. If this is the new slim PS3 then the only question now is whether it'll be unveiled at E3 next week or not.

Nicely analyzed, Mr. Ricker. :)
If sony gave us PS3Slim in E3 + price drop to 299$ everyone who call himself a gamer should get one
This thing HAS to have a touchscreen.
Where are the volume controls?
Home Button?
Brightness?
These missing buttons means it must be a touchscreen.
Or are you going to have to go into settings every time you want to change the volume level?
i think the playstation button on the outside is the home button but other that that i'm not sure.
I noticed you spelled "analyzed" with a Z as opposed to an "S"
AHAHAH!!!
but it's but ugly I hope MS come out with something because i can't buy this and it doesn't HAVE THE 2ND FUCKIN ANALOG WTF SONY
I hope the PS3 isn't what it is. It looks plain ugly, graphics will probably suck (due to hardware cut downs to make it slimmer of course), and just giving it a bad image. The PSP Go actually looks OK, not great, where are the two dual analog sticks? Touch screen perhaps? Just no...
@belloq: there are several buttons along the top of the unit. Watch the Qore video closely.
@sk8ordie:
"graphics will probably suck (due to hardware cut downs to make it slimmer of course)"
WUT. That is an INSANE bit of thought there.
Did the graphics suck when the PSX was reduced to a PS1? Did the graphics magically take a hit when the PS2 reduced to the Slim PS2? How about when the PSP Phat became the PSP Slim? How about the original DS when it became the DS Slite?
Protip: the graphics don't change at all. When chipsets get reduced (smaller dies with a bonus of better yields), you get the same functionality in a smaller form.
I can't agree. Look at the differences in the P and S fonts: the Go has sharp corners, the Slim has rounded corners. I doubt Sony would have slightly different typefaces on two new products in their high-visibility PS* line.
Nice. the PS3 Could stand to loose some weigh.
your mom could stand to lose some weigh also
It doesn't have a second thumb stick, wtf? That's the only reason why I would upgrade...
Yeah, they both do. I wont be surprised if sony over price this one too
Both look like shit, what's up?
I actually like the slimmer PS3, but the PSP looks too much like my Fisherprice equipment - and I want to separate these things ;)
Why are the slimming it down?
Miniaturization of parts doesnt make a console cheaper...and if they are removing stuff...well thats just absurd.
For me to buy a PS3 it will need to be $100 cheaper, i dont care about slimness. Just like i dont care how thin my dvd player or tv is.
just think of it this way: because some guys really care about looks, they bring out a slim version. everyone is gonna buy the new "cool" slim version, so the price of the big old fat one will drop, which is very fortunate for guys like you =D (i agree with you, by the way. I don't get one because my bank account loves bittorrent... stupid overpriced console games =P )
In mass production, miniaturization of parts usually does make things cheaper. If they can get it done with less components, less complex components (streamlining the design), lower power requirements (smaller ic's produce less heat), thus a smaller power supply, less fans and heat sinking, smaller boxes in shipping, lower ship weight, Suddenly each unit costs a substantially smaller amount . . . once production volume is high of course.
I care about looks as much as the next guy, heck, i do buy Macs after all, but for a game console that sits in my entertainment unit and doesnt move or ever get noticed slimness isnt high on my list.
Perhaps im comparing the miniaturization too closely with computers. With computers miniaturization almost always costs more. The atom N270 costs roughly $20 while the identically specced yet smaller Z530 costs roughly $70.
not to mentton the 90% chance itll STILL lack PS2 backwards compatibility. its not an issue for everyone... but for alot of ppl.. (ie: me) we're still in love with our 60gb/mgs80gb consoles and dont think its worth throwing away BC just to get a slimmer console that noone'll look at anyway (cuz... idk... we'd be too busy looking at the TV screen. playing, um... games. you know. cuz thats what it does.)
I'd go for a slim version. The price is certainly important but I also don't want something that looks like a shoebox, which is what the current PS3 does. With assorted devices attached to our TV already, I don't want something that takes up more room than it needs.
Making it smaller wouldn't necessarily cost more at all. The original PS3 Cell processor and RSX graphics chip were built at the 90nm scale. Building at a smaller scale is a tradeoff between increase in manufacturing equipment costs versus savings in silicon used, plus the smaller chips use less energy and create less heat. Newer PS3s already have 65nm Cell processors which has greatly decreased energy consumption and heat creation. Maybe they have moved the RSX to the 65nm scale as well, which would allow them to use a smaller encasement that would otherwise have gotten too hot. They also have been talking for awhile about plans to move the Cell to 45nm.
Smaller case means smaller packaging which means savings on shipping and store floorspace too.
So smaller isn't always more expensive. The PSone and PS2 Slim were cheaper than their larger counterparts. Manufacturing smaller components had become price competitive, and smaller packaging allowed for the other aforementioned savings.
it still looks like a hurrendous kirf
Well, I'm finally convinced the Slim PS3 is en route.
So long as the new model comes with a lower price and the ability to swap out HD's like the older models (and not some absurd mods), count me in for one.
Forget it, new models will always cost more. That ain't that stupid right? New production lines have to be payed. The old PS3 en PSP versions will offcourse be cheaper (in every way)
The additional costs of the "Slim" models are always short lived. Eventually the "Slim" replaces the older model entirely and helps bring the system cost way-down. Given Sony's track record with the PS2, within a year the PS3's cost will come down dramatically.
I hope they cancel that PSP. /barf
The PS3 is looking nice though.
lol What's with the hate about the PSP Go ?
It's not like Sony is forcing you to buy it.
Sony might be able to make PS3's controller compatible with the PSP Go (Bluetooth), now there's you're second analog stick. Oh and R2, R3, L2, and L3 too.
That may be, but I still doubt developers would implement dual analog support if only people who have a dualshock 3 controller can use it. If a game required dual analogs then a person would be required to buy a separate controller if they don't already have one, that makes no sense when a psp is designed to be a portable all-in-one game system.
Hopefully my post made sense...it did in my head anyways.
it made total sense... sides... i wouldnt wanna lug around a bulky controller (as light as it is... dont know how sony did it :\) just to play dual analog... (i dont think it can even FIT in a pocket....)
I have been waiting for the PS3 Slim before jumping on the wagon! Sounds kind of silly when I already have several Guitar Hero games for the PS3 :P
At least I borrowed a PS3 from a friend so far.
at least they could make the psp with touch screen OLED display...
fuck sony i'm loosing respect to you...
Am I the only one who things ergonomically this this is a knightmare?
Grammar failure...sorry
Thats alright, I'll fix it for you.
"Am I the only one who thinks this is an ergonomic nightmare?"
Sony is taunting us! You can clearly see where the 2nd Analog stick should go. You can see there's space above it for Start and Select. But instead they cram Start and Select in the 2nd Analog stick hole and leave the upper area empty?! WHY SONY! WHY DO YOU HATE US SO!!!!!
(Seriously, we need a mole on the inside of the company to find out exactly WHAT logic, IF ANY, makes Sony so much against putting two Analog joysticks on the PSP! Somebody, please get us Answers!!!)
Also, I hate to see, with every new version of the PS3, functionality being removed. I'd gladly pay more for a version of the PS3 that did everything the original did at launch, then less for one that been neutered but has a more attractive price point. In this run for a more competitive price, Sony seems to forget there is a market for High-End gaming equipment. :p
The PSP Go is just a re-design of the PSP- so a 2nd analog stick would not be viable as none of the current PSP titles would support it. I don't think they were planning on branching off to PSP and PSP Go development trees- they are keeping one platform with two differnet form factors (like the original PS2 and the PS2 slim).
I think Sony is getting everyone used to downloaded games instead of having media with this go; in a few years they will probably introduce a PSP2 with PSP Go compatibility.
I didn't get the specifics on the Bluetooth; is this for controller emulation for the PS3 or is this for A2DP- or both?
This are really going from bad to worse for Sony, aren't they? First the PSP-Go leaks spectacularly (press shots and all!), then the new PSP games leak, then the whole Qore episode leaks, then that PSP-Go leak adds credibility to the slim PS3 leak!
And if that wasn't bad enough, both PSP-Go and slimmer PS3 look worse than the original models and don't appear to bring any noteworthy new features to the table!
I'm convinced that both are real, and IMHO I think both look ok, but a tad ordinary - and also neither bring any real improvement over their predecessor models. So that gets me thinking - why would Sony bother with them (at least why bother now). I think the answer must be that both the new PSP and PS3 have to be "value" models and they both look it. I think maybe Sony has shifted strategy from marketing the PSP and PS3 as high tech, luxury multimedia items, to high value gaming units, with extras. Both new releases are a big deal and I think will be joined with price cuts for both - with the aim to be significantly increase the number of units out there. OK they're not going to have throwaway prices, but they'll be a lot more tempting to purchase than at the current prices.
Did Sony fire their designers for a day when they designed these two. They both look really cheap and horrible.
Never seen that ps3 logo type before, and it would be very strange if they changed it just for a slimmer model. Changing the logo after a product release is usually a no go in branding/marketing land, even though it is a slimmer model. So I'm still not convinced.
You're not convinced, because you don't want to be.
Sony changed the logo when they went from the psx to the ps1.
The new logo is the ps2 logo with rounded corners. Possible callback to when they owned the console space.
Also they dumped the top logo when they slimmed the ps2.
It makes sense that these are real.
Yeah, I doubt the PS3 slim is real not only because of the reason you just stated, but also because the Qore video said the PSP Go! was the "hottest new member of the PLAYSTATION family". You would think the PS3 Slim would be the hottest new member of the PLAYSTATION family.
PS3 slim may be announced this week, but I highly doubt it.
At least Sony has a handheld gaming device, unlike another company I can think of..
I fail to see your point, fanboi.
*Cough* Zune HD *cough*
Zune HD is NOT a handheld gaming device. It's not really meant to be. And the iPhone is awful for games. Absolutely awful. I'd take buttons over a touch screen anyday. Why? Because people make garbage that sells well. a la DS.
Is the DS really handheld? It's certainly not pocket sized like this thing is.
MY GOODNESS!
What is going on with you Sony PlayStation?!
Haven't you learned your lesson? Do I sense panic in your camp?
Are you succumbing to the pressure tactics of the Nintendo Empire?
Are you going from Hero to Zero like Sega?
Is the 120 year old Nintendo Empire Striking back with full vengeance after a decade!?
Has the Empire got their act together and rebuild the Death Star? T_T
Nintendo= Emperor
Sega=Anakin,
Sony=Luke,
Microsoft=Han Solo
