iPhone 3GS announced: $199 16GB, $299 32GB, June 19th

As endlessly predicted, Apple's unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3G S -- the "s" stands for speed. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. You're also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too -- holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple's touting a new "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating." New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 19th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August -- and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You'll have to pay a bit more if you're mid-contract, though -- $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.

Can you use the iphone 3.2 MP camera to for biometric authentication...such as face recognition and fingerprint scanning? Why is there no app yet to do this yet? Pick up phone with finger on the camera lens, slide to unlock automatically switches on camera and puts it in macro mode. No need to enter a security code, the finger photo is authenticated against stored finger photo and you are in.

Bit of a stab. But some sites are offering £200 for a 16gb 3G. (dunno what they are going for on ebay) so is there any mileage in buying a payg 3GS sticking your 3G contract sim in and flogging your old 3G.
That would bring the PAYG price back down a bit.
Still don't know if I will upgrade though. and don't know if there are any t's and c's on O2 to prevent this......

as a existing iphone owner and a early adopter of all the phones since there launch i am appalled that AT&T is giving current iphone owners a 200 dollar tax to upgrade to the new 3gs. I don't know about you but i think apple is going to have a significant decrease in sales from current iphone owners because they have to pay this fee. I hope that apple will negotiate with AT&T to eliminate this unlawful and unjust tax.

On a more positive note i am excited by these new features. Too bad i need to pay 400 dollars to try them out for my self

Hey guys.. I work for a Sprint B2B dealer and picked up a Pre on opening day.. I must say that the phone is better than any other smartphone Sprint has ever released, but in all honesty, the whole pre interface shows obvious "wanna-be" status of the iphone. I used to work for ATT corporate and I've been using an iphone 3g for almost a year now.. The pre is nothing worth looking at in my opinion. The only neat thing added is the multiple applications ability which LOOKS like something apple would do with its smooth gestured interface and multitouch capabilities. I will be selling my pre in about two days and convert my sprint dealer line back to just an air card.

As for the 3Gs, all these new features could have been added to the current 3G with just the 3.0 SW update (besides the compass and higher res camera, of course).. I'm VERY underwhelmed at what Apple decided to do with this release.. they should have developed an entire new hardware concept (something along the lines of the newest ipod nano or an aluminum "unibody" style iphone similar to the new macbooks).

My final thoughts:
-Don't buy a Pre, it's Palm's attempt to be an iPhone
-Don't buy a 3Gs if you have the 3G already (3Gs might be a nice upg from original iphone though)
-Wait for a new concept of iphone design

I literally have the Pre and iphone 3g sitting next to me, and the iphone takes the cake without question.
As you can see, this is coming from a completely unbiased Sprint employee using both Pre and iphone.

With all the hype surrounding this latest iphone, I think its important to remember that Apple aren't perfect, and the long-term price tag associated with the iPhone etc. is both unjustified, and larger than it first appears.
