Nokia 7- or 9-inch MeeGo tablet rumored to be running ARM (not Moorestown) in Q4
While DigiTimes has been known to get a rumor correct now and again, its success rate falls off dramatically when dealing with companies HQ'd outside of its native Taiwan. Keep that in mind when you hear it discuss a Nokia tablet with either a 7- or 9-inch screen. DigiTimes, speaking with "upstream component makers," claims that the Foxconn manufactured device -- of which, about 100 engineering samples have already been produced -- will be ARM-based with a Q4 launch targeted. If true (and that's a big IF) then it would certainly be running the MeeGo OS (that's a Quanta-built prototype above) when it ships. Of course, DigiTimes has been rumoring an ARM-based smartbook from Nokia due in mid 2010 for almost a year. And guess what? It's mid 2010, with smartbooks/netbooks now out of style and tablets all the rage. Thing is, we'd have thought that Nokia would be more likely to opt for Intel's Moorestown in support of their partnership given the Q4 timing. But hey, it's just rumor, let's not get too carried away.

I wonder if I will be able to run OpenOffice or other existing Linux software on MeeGo. If yes, then it will be BIG WIN.
@stoffer
If it doesnt run directly, it can be made to run on meego, without that much modification. Plus MeeGo is compatible with QT, meaning that software made with QT can be ported quite easily.
So in the near future you will see a lot of linux software running on MeeGo. MeeGo might be the OS that brings linux to the masses. Since android is stripped down, chrome OS is even more stripped.
MeeGo has great potential, an is backed up by two big players on the market. At this point, there is no other OS that really competes with it, being a cross platform OS.
@JonHolstein That's what I am hoping for. At last, with Intel pushing for Linux we might get more Open Source for the masses.
@stoffer
Yes, this is products with full linux, pushed to consumers.
Not like Android och Chrome, that are stripped down, and wont do anything to bring applications to linux.
These products we will se in a store near us... not just an installation of ubuntu, on a webstore far away.
Everbody who is sensible and who doesn’t want to give all your data to Google, will go either for this nice little thing or the ipad.
@magadget
considering this is a real computer OS, you cant really compare iOS, Android or iOS with this.
The fantastic thing about MeeGo, is that you can have the same OS in your phone, and run the same applications.
MeeGo based tablet I could actually consider. It would be running Open Office, VNC, mplayer and firefox based browser with flash. Now that is a tablet that beats the crap out of iPad in my books.
Still not convinced tablets are usable enough though...
@Rev
yeah, they should really make a convertible. Then you can sit in a relaxed position, watching the screen, without the need to old it up.
But they should keep pretty low specs, to make it ligh enought so that you can hold it as a tablet if you need.
Meego????????
I am very sorry to see Nokia following its own way... Everybody else on Android, and the lonely Nokia battling with the poor Meego.
I mean what's the point? Nobody cares about Meego. The rule is iPhone OS, Android OS... in the sector of smartphones/tablets. Thats where the developers are, and what the customer asks for... not Bada, not Meego, not Symbian, not WM....
What's the point on insisting on a doomed choice? Specwise it may be fine, but I wouldn't go for it... Give me android, and I will consider it.
I am not an android zealot, but definatelly not a fan of dead OSes...
@Corsair
Sorry you feel that way. I'm sure nobody should never develop anything new (Maemo / MeeGo is actually lot older than iPhone and Android but anyway).
Besides, while I haven't tried MeeGo yet, neither iOS or Android comes close to the potential of Maemo. I really, really hope Nokia doesn't abandon it based on current platform dominance. Nokia has plenty of marketshare and resources to make MeeGo a viable choice.
@Corsair
ANd clearly not educated in what MeeGo is.
First, nokia is not alone on this, they have joined forces with Intel, and there have been several of hardware manufactors that have made conceptual products with MeeGo.
Far from everyone else is on Android.
A whole lot of people care about MeeGo and more will in the future.
MeeGo is a real computer OS, real linux, not a stripped down core like with Android.
MeeGo is a computer OS, that will run on computers, tvs. information devices, mobiles, and more.
MeeGo is compatible with QT, meaning that applications made with QT can quite easily be ported to MeeGo.
Since MeeGo is full linux, linux programs can be ported to MeeGo.
Here you have the choice, when you buy a tablet.
Do you want windows 7, a real OS, with lots of programs. Lots of drivers.
Do you want MeeGo, a lightweight real os, with lots of programs, but not yet as many drivers.
Or do you want a phone OS, that is limited in multitasking. That is not developed for a big screen, running applications side by side for example. Well, then you can go for android or iOS, but then you are not really getting a tablet, then you are getting a portable media player with touchscreen, and some internetsupport.
Google does not even support Android for tablets!
@JonHolstein
good post , i have said it before , but i really hope MeeGo is the OS that makes linux really popular
@Corsair, yeah, a dead OS that is full GNU/Linux (just like Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSE...) backed up by both, the largest CPU and the largest mobile devices manufacturer in the world. I can clearly see it failing...
This one looks nice.
wow a huge first gen. iphone.
here is a more nice video demo of meego os

Nokia as got release a Tablet with Meego on it an just to show that are still competeing an not going to be outshined by Apple an the others,an this will always show people the upcoming software of future Nokia phones,can"t wait to see an use it
The Google and Apple fanatics downplaying Nokia's capability don't seem to realize that Nokia has ten times more experienced in the mobile industry than Apple and Google combined. More power to Nokia for trying something different with MeeGo.
What are you so proud and protective of iOS and Android, a grid of icons concept circa 10 years ago?
@shishi
Many years ago, Nokia already made this:

:)
meego certainly seems like a great os in the making. cant wait to get a tablet or a phone with meego on it. apple fanboys- wait and see
@prabs
Dont want to sound critical or anything but lets wait if the tablet rumour is reality (I guess they will want to announce in Nokia World) or it is just another vaporware (ala Courier).
@naashak
Nokia will will almost certainly make a MeeGo tablet, but if it will be ARM based and coming out in Q4, is the part of this story that is a rumor.
Its nothing like the Courier, cause the software has already been shown on working devices. Nokia will release a touchscreen based phone, sometime late this year, or perhaps delayed to q1 next year. And that one will most likely feature an ARM processor, since it has been in the works since before Intel/Nokia made their relations public. Since MeeGo is full linux, scalinng the exact version of the software on to a tablet would be an easy task. So surely this is entierly possible. Courier kept showing a demo video of something a little more complicated, and not on a real device. Courier OS wasnt even shown on any device and in any form, by then. Now We've seen Windows Embede Compact 7, and that was probably what was supposed to be the base for courier, With MeeGo we've Seen the Maemo 5 device N900 last year, and before that other Maemo based touchscreen devices from Nokia, We've seen an public release of MeeGo, we've seen the in the article mentioned tablet running MeeGo.
and that's resistive? imagine if that would have been capacitive?
