  • Replicate Grandma's Homestyle Cooking with these Modern Gadgets

Grandma's cooking was legendary. She cooked during a time when people made everything from scratch. Egg substitutes would never make it into her pot, and even replicating her grilled cheese sandwiches – something so simple to make – is downright impossible. Maybe it was the love she poured into her food, or maybe it was the ingredients – no one knows for sure. The one thing that we do know is that replicating a grandma's homestyle cooking is difficult. But I am here to tell you that there are modern gadgets that will allow you to recreate grandma's cooking techniques. You might never cook your favorite dish exactly like grandma, but you can come close. These gadgets can help: 1. Zojirushi BB-CEC20 Bread Machine Who has the time to make bread from scratch? Grandma did, but you sure don't. Working a 9 – 5 gives you little time to knead bread, wait for dough to rise and monitor the oven every second. Grandma, and many chefs, will make the following from scratch: Rolls Baguettes Homemade croutons (with leftovers) And there are a variety of other breads you can make, too. The good news? There's a bread machine that can do the job without needing to call grandma, or the entire family in hopes of finding her "secret recipe." The Zojirushi BB-CEC20 is a breadmaker that can bake a two-pound loaf of bread. There's also a quick bake cycle which prepares bread in a mere two hours. And there's a 13-hour delay timer that you can set before you leave the house so that you have fresh bread when you walk through the door. You can make: Bread Jam Cake These delights are offered with the pre-programmed cycle. Just add the ingredients and take credit for your homemade bread. 2. Masha Mashed potatoes are amazing. Steak and mashed potatoes are a perfect pair, or chicken, or beef – you get the hint. Everything tastes better with mashed potatoes. Grandma's arms were strong because she spent countless hours mashing potatoes for you. It's a lot of work. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself and see how the lumps never seem to come out smooth like grandma's potatoes did. Masha changes the way you make mashed potatoes. The low speed motor and mesh outer allows you to mix everything to perfection, including: Mashed potatoes Cake mixes Guacamole Pastries Baby food This is a kitchen appliance even grandma would be proud to own. 3. Marcato Atlas Pasta Machine If you didn't have an Italian grandma, you may want to skip this section – unless, of course, you have a deep passion for pasta, too. Making homemade pasta is difficult, and it's so tedious that even grandma would be impressed by your effort. Marcato offers the Atlas Pasta Machine. This pasta machine comes in nearly a dozen colors, and it allows you to make homemade pasta while taking care of the hard part: Rolling Cutting You just hand crank the unit, and it takes care of the rest. The great thing is that there are three pasta shapes provided with the machine. You can purchase 12 accessories separately if you want to make different types of pasta. The unit offers 10 different thickness settings, and the pasta shapes provided with the unit, for free, are: Fettuccine Lasagna Tagliolini Designed and manufactured in Italy, this is the machine you want by your side if you salivate every time you think back to grandma's homemade pasta. 4. Anova Culinary Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Precision Cooker Maybe you want to cook great food with little effort. You know, sometimes, especially for bachelors, it's difficult to make anything aside from macaroni and cheese or Hot Pockets. Sure, the cheese and pasta tastes good now, but it's not the best for you health-wise. If there was only an easier way to cook without fear of burning the food or insulting your taste buds. There is a way: Sous Vide. Yes, yes, Sous Vide is French, but it's a breakthrough in the way people cook. See, water is used to cook your food, and the food is put into bags that ensure the flavor is sealed in. You won't be eating water-logged food. No, your machine keeps the water out. Anova changed the way people cook, and this precision cooker uses Wi-Fi to allow you to: Alert your cooker to start cooking while at work Change settings Get status updates on your food on your phone This is a way to cook that's futuristic and seems unreal. You can do it all with the click of a button. This unit can fit any pot, and the auto-cook setting keeps your food safe. Excellent temperature control and a small footprint make it a no-brainer for anyone who wants to season their steak, place it in a bag and come home to homemade, grandma-style food. 5. Ball FreshTECH Automatic Jam & Jelly Maker Jams and jelly spread across fresh bread is a true delight. There's no reason to buy jam filled with preserves and sugars – you can make the real thing. Grandma knew that jam and jelly goes straight to a person's heart. But making jams and jellies on your own is difficult. A lot of attention to detail goes into jam and jelly making. Ball FreshTECH knows the struggle, and the company has designed an automatic jam and jelly maker that can rival even grandma's jams. Easy and safe, this model makes 4 cups of jam or jelly at one time. Just push a button, and the machine takes care of the rest. There's no guesswork involved. Just supply the ingredients, and the rest is history. The Jam Maker will sift and stir the ingredients, heating them to perfection until your jams are perfect. You will need to adjust your own recipe to fit the constraints of this jam maker, but it's easy to do and worth the effort. I'm confident that even your grandma didn't want to sit and stir strawberries waiting for the perfect consistency. Now, you (and maybe even your grandma) won't need to wait on jam or jelly to cook again. Grandma's homestyle cooking is part love, part ingredients and part effort. You can replicate some of your grandma's cooking, and these five machines take most of the effort out of the process. Now there are no more excuses left not to cook.

  • Sous Vide Equipment Holiday Gift Guide

Sous Vide Equipment Holiday Gift Guide Over the years, consumers have experimented with a wide array of different cooking techniques. While each has its own set of pros and cons, the sous vide method of cooking is deemed by many to be the best choice. Through this form of cooking, the edibles are stored in airtight bags and placed in a water bath. Alternatively, the bags may also be cooked in a controlled steam environment. Typically, the temperatures remain between 131 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a specified duration. The objective is to ensure the inside of the food is cooked evenly with the outside. This guarantees optimum moisture, while also reducing the chance of burning the food's exterior. Truly, sous vide equipment can make an excellent gift for almost any member of your family. Once your loved one has familiarized him or herself with the sous vide cooking basics, they'll fall in love with the equipment. And, they may never use the stove or oven ever again. Types of Sous Vide Equipment There are two primary types of Sous Vide equipment, the stand-alone unit and immersion circulator. Both of these units work efficiency, with the operation processes being very similar. To help better understand these machines, each is broken down further. The stand-alone unit does not require any extra equipment, which is why it is highly preferred. This unit provides innumerable benefits, with one of the most notable being quick and easy cleanup. The food items are placed inside of a vacuum-sealed bag and then placed into the cooking chamber. Preset the cooking mode and timer and before long, you will be able to enjoy a healthy, delicious meal. The immersion circulator is a very unique cooking unit that requires an additional pot. The setup is virtually the same as the stand-alone unit, but the sealed vacuum bag is placed in the cooking pot, along with the immersion circulator. The cleanup process is slightly more difficult, but to achieve an enjoyable meal, it will be worth it. When comparing the two cooking machines, the functionality is virtually the same. The only recognizable difference is the design, but the end results will be the same, a perfectly cooked, delicious meal. Popular Standalone Units The market is over-saturated with excellent standalone units. Nonetheless, a few have managed to excel far beyond their competitors. Below, you will learn a little about the two most popular standalone units on the market. Tribest Sousvant SV-101 The Tribest Sousvant SV-101 is truly the perfect combination of beauty, functionality and simplicity. The all-in-one design ensures the unit is cost-effective and this makes it a great gift regardless of your budget. The unit's digital display makes sous vide cooking straightforward and uncomplicated. With a few minutes of fidgeting and reading the included manual, anyone will be able to operate this unit efficiently. The Tribest Sousvant is immensely easy to maintain and it features a handy safety indicator. If power is interrupted, the user will know about it. This ensures unsafe food can be cooked more thoroughly before being served. The insulated housing will prove to be much safer than immersion circulators. Finally, the unit is protected by a 2-warranty. This guarantees it will serve your loved one for many years to come. Sous Vide Supreme Demi Water Oven Those looking for an excellent alternative would be wise to check out the Sous Vide Supreme Demi Water Oven. The product is available in two individualistic color schemes, which ensure your gift will satisfy the receiver's design preferences. The unit operates silently, so it can be used any time of the day or night without any problems whatsoever. Utilization of the Sous Vide Supreme Demi Water Oven is truly simplistic. The user can simply configure the settings and leave things be until the cooking process has concluded. Cleanup is also very easy. Just give the interior a good scrubbing and you're good to go. For added peace of mind, the product is covered by a 1-year warranty. Popular Immersion Circulators While some consumers will prefer a standalone unit, there are some benefits associated with immersion circulators. If you believe your loved one will be better served by an immersion circulator, you will want to check out the popular models below. Anova Precision Cooker The Anova Precision Cooker is a highly innovative immersion circulator, which will put a smile on anyone's face. The product's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility makes it possible for the gift receiver to prepare their food from almost anywhere in the world. The associated mobile application gives the user complete control over the cooker's heat and timer settings. At the same time, the user will receive alerts via their phone. To make the product even more compelling, you can guarantee the Anova Precision Cooker will be suitable for anyone. No additional equipment is necessary, so it is truly a suitable gift for each member of your family. Gourmia Immersion Sous Vide Pod The Gourmia Immersion Pod is a slightly more affordable alternative with a little added personalization. The product is available in several unique color schemes to ensure you can find one that suits each of your loved ones. This immersion circulator is equipped with a convenient clip attachment, which ensures it will remain secured to the pot at all times. Utilization of the Gourmia couldn't be easier. The user can simply adjust the dial and wait for the cooking process to finish. While the Gourmia Sous Vide Pod doesn't feature the Wi-Fi functionality, it is much more affordable and it will get the job done. It is truly no coincidence that it is one of the most popular immersion circulations on the market. Sous Vide Accessories The Sous Vide cooking machine will be the most prominent equipment in a kitchen. Every cooking enthusiast, culinarian or professional chef will want to complete his or her cooking gear with Sous Vide accessories. The vacuum bags are a must, since they play a huge role in the cooking process. These bags are designed out of BPA-free materials, so there will never be need to worry about consuming harmful toxins. A vacuum sealer is a necessity and the Sous Vide cooking method provides consumers with two sealing system options. The manual hand pump, with clips is simplistic, but capable of sealing the vacuum bags to perfection. However, if the desire is to complete the process in a time manner, the automatic vacuum sealing system should be on the agenda. Overall Christmas will be here before you know. Now that you have ingested the information above, you should have a good gift idea for at least one member of your family. Before going any further, you may want to check out the sous vide holiday gift guide. Remember that standalone units and immersion circulators have a few differentials, but they're also very similar. At the same time, there are numerous factors to consider when attempting to invest in one of these units. To ensure you make the best possible choice, it is recommended that you check out the comprehensive buying guide. Doing so will provide you with further insight to these products, their features, and the different models available. While you're at it, you may also want to consider slipping an accessory or two under your friend's Christmas tree. Put in the effort and learn about these machines a little more thoroughly. This will give you the upper hand and help ensure you put a smile on the receiver's face!

  • Rover Cards will Revolutionize the Dog Walking Industry

Dog walking is a huge industry. People have an affinity for our canine friends. Maybe it's the love and affection that dogs are known to provide, or maybe it's knowing that you have a loyal companion who needs your companionship and care, too. In either case, dogs need to be walked, and a lot of people are paying dog walkers to do the job for them. People have responsibilities, and while they slave away at their cubicle, their four-legged friend at home will need to be taken care of properly. For anyone who is at work for 10 – 12 hours a day, this means hiring a dog walker to act on your behalf. But how do you know your dog walker is really doing their job? The walker you hired may bring your dog out for two minutes to do his business and leave afterward, although you're paying for 30-minute sessions. Rover Cards Aim to Change Dog Walking Rover.com is a network that connects dog walkers and pet sitters with dog owners who need their services. And the service has been a major success. Innovation has helped the company jump into the spotlight, but now, Rover Cards have been introduced. Think of Rover Card as a report card that is given to the dog's owner after every walking. This card, or app, uses technology to ensure that a dog is walked up to the owner's standards. It's a way to offer transparency in the dog walking industry. The technology has been built into an app that allows dog walkers, or anyone caring for a dog, to track and share information with the dog's owner. The app will tell the dog owner: When the caretaker arrived Where the dog was walked via a GPS map The dog sitter or walker will also be able to take photos of the dog when they're in the person's care. Notes can even be attached to the app "report card" to tell owners anything of importance. "Zeus ran after the mailman – here's a picture" may be a note added to the report card. And if the pet is recovering from being sick or from a surgical procedure, the app can have notes attached that puts the dog's owner at ease. "Zeus took all of his medicine and is standing better today" may be a message left to the owner. All report cards are delivered to the pet's owner immediately when the dog gets back to the house. It's a step in the right direction to ensure that dogs are getting the time and attention they need when not in their owner's care. With 83% of owners worried that their dog walker isn't doing a satisfactory job, this is a way to ease the mind of dog owners. "Dogs are an integral part of people's families, and with 65% of people getting dogs for companionship, it makes sense that people would want their dog's properly cared for in their absence," states Joe, an expert on dog care and training. Dog Walking is a Huge Industry Who hires dog walkers? A lot of people don't have the money to make their rent every month, but people are willing to splurge on their dogs. And believe it or not, people are willing to pay a lot to have their dogs walked. There was a recent article on MarketWatch about dog walkers. People with small backyards or no backyards at all – think people that live in the middle of New York City – often pay someone to walk their dogs. It's an industry that has been popular since the 60s, and the industry brings in $900+ million a year. The growth of the industry is 3% per year, and 23,000 people are employed as dog walkers. It's a niche market, and it's likely to remain one, but it's an industry teeming with high energy dogs that can't stay in the house all day. Ryan Stewart, a dog walker in the Big Apple, was covered by MarketWatch in the same article linked above. Stewart charges $15 to walk clients' dogs, and walks 40 – 50 days every day. Did I mention that he also has three employees under him? Do the math. He makes $600 - $750 per day. He has expenses, but he personally walks dogs 25 hours a week and makes $110,000 per year. Stewart isn't alone in this money-making venture. A lot of people are cashing in on the craze, with one of Stewart's friends making $2,000 a week walking dogs. And now with the help of Rover Cards, there is proof that dog walkers are earning their paychecks. There is no longer the fear that dog walkers are cutting corners and lining their pockets in the process. Rover Cards offer details for: Start times End times GPS maps Food breaks Water breaks Pee and poop breaks And for people that melt when they see their dog's smiling faces, cute photos can be added to the report card, too.

  • How Technology Makes Training Your Dog Easier

Training dogs is a difficult task for a lot of owners. Some dogs just "get it," and it seems like they can be trained with as little effort as possible. Then all of a sudden, a husky comes into your life, and while beautiful, this dog is a free spirit and doesn't want to listen to a single command. The mirror training method works for most dogs, but there are some dogs that are simply not driven by food and positive reinforcement. Utilizing technology can help you train Fido faster and more efficiently. What technology is available to help you train your dog? Some of our favorites include: Electric Fences for Safety Rewarding good behavior is a start, but there are times when a dog can risk his own life if he don't listen to his master. A good example of this is trying to teach your dog commands outside of the home. Even simple commands can seemingly be forgotten when once your dog steps foot in the yard. And if you lose his attention for a split second, there's a chance he might dash across the street and get hit by a car. Electric fences stop your dog from leaving the yard. Many models have different levels of correction that ensure small and large dogs alike stop dead in their tracks when they come in contact with an electric fence. If you have a dog that likes to run out of the house while you're trying to open the door and juggle five bags of groceries, an electric fence will reinforce your dog staying in the yard. Distance Training Reinforcement Traditionally, you needed to be right next to your pet to teach him commands. Electric remote dog collars, for example, allow for correction even when you're not right next to your dog. A good example of this is trying to train your dog to listen to the stay command. You can walk 5-feet away, and if the dog moves, you can correct using the collar and reinforce the command. And these collars can reinforce in different ways: Shocks Vibrations Tones Distance training is a lot easier thanks to technology. Smartphone Apps Can Help, Too Even the best resource for dog information won't help you train your dog unless you're dedicated. Smartphone apps have changed the way people train their dogs because there are apps for: Clickers – a universal tool that corrects a dog's behavior Housebreaking – no one wants their dog to have an accident at home. Apps for housebreaking can alert you when it's time to bring your pet outside. Videos – forget what Cesar Millan said in his video? Watch it on your smartphone. Dog owners will not be able to find success training a dog if they're not dedicated. You need to be diligent and reinforce behavior often. Dogs are said to be able to learn up to 200 verbal commands, and a new study released in August 2016 even showed that dogs understand tonal changes in their master's commands. Dogs are smart animals, and when training and technology meld together, you'll be able to train even the most stubborn dog new commands – or shovel treats down his throat until he listens.

  • 3 Cooking Technologies That Will Change the Way You Cook

Cooking just got a lot more awesome, and you probably missed it. There have been a lot of advancements in cooking in recent years, and they don't require you to slave over your stove night and day to cook food. Your grandma may not appreciate these "shortcuts" to cooking mind-blowing food, but anyone with limited time or that isn't a sous chef will appreciate a little help in the kitchen. Let's see which technologies have changed the way people cook – or will in the future: 1. Smartypans Pans haven't seemed to change much since I was a kid. Sure, some metals have gained favor, but the chef is really in control of the cooking process. Until now, no one has used technology to really change the way we cook. Smartypans bridges the gap between delicious food and cooking. This is the stuff of sci-fi movies – seriously. Smartypans do a lot to change the way you cook. The technology is in preorder right now, but it allows at-home chefs to: Connect to an app with a microcontroller. Measure all ingredient weights in real-time Measures temperature settings in real-time And it uses an 800 mah LiPo battery to power itself. The battery is rechargeable, too. So, cooking will look something like this: Start up the Smartypan Connect to the accompanying app Choose your recipe Use your voice to say: Adding chicken Adding onions Adding peppers Adding mushrooms When you say the ingredient, the pan will weigh each ingredient along the way and track all of the nutritional data, too. If you're trying to lose weight or get jacked like The Rock, this is an awesome feature. You can follow recipes precisely and even share them with a friend to make the perfect recipe each and every time. Every recipe will be calculated to precision, a timer will alert you when your food is done, and if the temperature gets too hot, you'll be alerted about this, too. If you find yourself burning food often or not being able to get the recipe just right, Smartypans will do the trick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCxREhBfr5M 2. Sous Vide I'm not sure whether to call Sous Vide a technology or a technique (it's kind of a hybrid between the two), but I do know it provides the utmost flavor with meats and vegetables. When you cook, you subject your food to very high heats to cook the food quickly. Chicken's internal temperature needs to be something like 165 degrees, but we cook it at 350 degrees or higher because, let's be honest, no one has the time to babysit food all day. Sous Vide takes all of the difficulty out of cooking to make it as simple as possible. And you'll be cooking food using water not the air that's in your home oven. A Sous Vide oven will be needed, and these are water ovens. I know, a water oven sounds odd, but it works, and it works really well. Think of this as a form of slow cooking that uses sturdy plastic bags to protect the food and trap in flavor. It's different, but it improves: Flavor Ease of cooking Nutrient retention Normal cooking over a hot flame will degrade some of the nutrients in the food you eat, but Sous Vide keeps many of these lost nutrients intact. I eat a lot of chicken (can you tell?), so I am going with the previous example. Add the following into your bag: Chicken Spices Onions Whatever else you like All that's left to do is vacuum seal the bag, set your Sous Vide oven to the right temperature (146 degrees I believe), place your bag inside of the water, and close the oven up. It's that simple – and it takes 30 minutes or so. Tender, filled with flavor and nutrient-rich chicken is the result. It doesn't get easier than this, and you never have to worry about burning your food either. The good news is that there are a lot of resources online that will help you get started with Sous Vide, so you can cook delicious food today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q21O515OLxU 3. Lynx Grill What grill do you own? If it's not the Lynx, you're living in the Stone Age. I'm not even exaggerating here – this grill will talk to you. It sounds crazy, but it's truly revolutionary, and this grill has been around for a few years, too. This is a smart grill, and it's so simple to use that even a five-year old can make the best food in town. Don't get me wrong, this is an expensive piece of cookery, but this high-tech grill is Wi-Fi-enabled, voice-activated and practically cooks your entire meal for you. The Lynx has blended the everyday barbecue with the technology you would find in your smartphone, and added cooking into the mix to make your life a lot easier. What can this grill do? Follow each food's instructions Tell you when to flip food (through voice) Tell you when the food is done Everything is made so simple that even a person cooking for the first time couldn't mess up their food unless they walked away from the grill. The included app has a slew of recipes available. All you need to do is select a recipe on your Android or iOS device, and send it to your grill via Wi-Fi. The grill will then ask you a few questions, like how many burners you want activated, and then it will start to warm up. After a few minutes, the grill will tell you to put the food on the burners and instruct you the entire way to cook delicious food each and every time. But wait, you can even tell the grill to activate. If you put scallops on the grill, just tell it what you're cooking, and the grill takes care of the rest. Say "scallops' status," and the grill tells you the exact time, down to the seconds, that the scallops have left to cook. Temperature sensing probes allows you to make the perfect burger, meat, vegetables and any other food. The grill learns your preferences, and the included recipe database is updated through user recipes. Worried that you like medium-rare a little differently than other people? A "less rare" command will help the grill learn your commands to "teach" it your personal preferences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q0YQ7EDPpI
