3 Cooking Technologies That Will Change the Way You Cook
Cooking just got a lot more awesome, and you probably missed it. There have been a lot of advancements in cooking in recent years, and they don't require you to slave over your stove night and day to cook food.

Your grandma may not appreciate these "shortcuts" to cooking mind-blowing food, but anyone with limited time or that isn't a sous chef will appreciate a little help in the kitchen.

Let's see which technologies have changed the way people cook – or will in the future:

1. Smartypans

Pans haven't seemed to change much since I was a kid. Sure, some metals have gained favor, but the chef is really in control of the cooking process. Until now, no one has used technology to really change the way we cook.

Smartypans bridges the gap between delicious food and cooking.

This is the stuff of sci-fi movies – seriously. Smartypans do a lot to change the way you cook. The technology is in preorder right now, but it allows at-home chefs to:
  • Connect to an app with a microcontroller.
  • Measure all ingredient weights in real-time
  • Measures temperature settings in real-time
And it uses an 800 mah LiPo battery to power itself. The battery is rechargeable, too.

So, cooking will look something like this:
  • Start up the Smartypan
  • Connect to the accompanying app
  • Choose your recipe
  • Use your voice to say:
    • Adding chicken
    • Adding onions
    • Adding peppers
    • Adding mushrooms
When you say the ingredient, the pan will weigh each ingredient along the way and track all of the nutritional data, too. If you're trying to lose weight or get jacked like The Rock, this is an awesome feature.

You can follow recipes precisely and even share them with a friend to make the perfect recipe each and every time.

Every recipe will be calculated to precision, a timer will alert you when your food is done, and if the temperature gets too hot, you'll be alerted about this, too. If you find yourself burning food often or not being able to get the recipe just right, Smartypans will do the trick.


2. Sous Vide

I'm not sure whether to call Sous Vide a technology or a technique (it's kind of a hybrid between the two), but I do know it provides the utmost flavor with meats and vegetables. When you cook, you subject your food to very high heats to cook the food quickly.

Chicken's internal temperature needs to be something like 165 degrees, but we cook it at 350 degrees or higher because, let's be honest, no one has the time to babysit food all day.

Sous Vide takes all of the difficulty out of cooking to make it as simple as possible.

And you'll be cooking food using water not the air that's in your home oven. A Sous Vide oven will be needed, and these are water ovens. I know, a water oven sounds odd, but it works, and it works really well.

Think of this as a form of slow cooking that uses sturdy plastic bags to protect the food and trap in flavor.

It's different, but it improves:
  • Flavor
  • Ease of cooking
  • Nutrient retention
Normal cooking over a hot flame will degrade some of the nutrients in the food you eat, but Sous Vide keeps many of these lost nutrients intact.

I eat a lot of chicken (can you tell?), so I am going with the previous example. Add the following into your bag:
  • Chicken
  • Spices
  • Onions
  • Whatever else you like
All that's left to do is vacuum seal the bag, set your Sous Vide oven to the right temperature (146 degrees I believe), place your bag inside of the water, and close the oven up. It's that simple – and it takes 30 minutes or so.

Tender, filled with flavor and nutrient-rich chicken is the result.

3. Lynx Grill

What grill do you own? If it's not the Lynx, you're living in the Stone Age. I'm not even exaggerating here – this grill will talk to you. It sounds crazy, but it's truly revolutionary, and this grill has been around for a few years, too.

This is a smart grill, and it's so simple to use that even a five-year old can make the best food in town.

Don't get me wrong, this is an expensive piece of cookery, but this high-tech grill is Wi-Fi-enabled, voice-activated and practically cooks your entire meal for you.

The Lynx has blended the everyday barbecue with the technology you would find in your smartphone, and added cooking into the mix to make your life a lot easier.
What can this grill do?
  • Follow each food's instructions
  • Tell you when to flip food (through voice)
  • Tell you when the food is done
Everything is made so simple that even a person cooking for the first time couldn't mess up their food unless they walked away from the grill.

The included app has a slew of recipes available. All you need to do is select a recipe on your Android or iOS device, and send it to your grill via Wi-Fi. The grill will then ask you a few questions, like how many burners you want activated, and then it will start to warm up.

After a few minutes, the grill will tell you to put the food on the burners and instruct you the entire way to cook delicious food each and every time.

But wait, you can even tell the grill to activate. If you put scallops on the grill, just tell it what you're cooking, and the grill takes care of the rest. Say "scallops' status," and the grill tells you the exact time, down to the seconds, that the scallops have left to cook.

Temperature sensing probes allows you to make the perfect burger, meat, vegetables and any other food.

The grill learns your preferences, and the included recipe database is updated through user recipes. Worried that you like medium-rare a little differently than other people? A "less rare" command will help the grill learn your commands to "teach" it your personal preferences.
