Motorola lists phones that won't get Jelly Bean, offers $100 credit to buy a phone that will
Back in September, Motorola Mobility announced that some of its handsets from 2011 and later wouldn't be making the jump to Jelly Bean. In an effort to smooth things over with exiled customers, the company pledged that it would offer a $100 rebate to those who trade up to a select Motorola smartphone. Today, the Google-owned Android maker has released a list detailing which phones qualify for this promotion. If you're among the many who purchased a Droid 3, Droid X2 and Photon 4G, it looks like an official update to Android 4.1 is out of the question. It should be noted that this offer doesn't affect your wireless contract's terms and conditions (read: ETF may still apply). However, if you're just aching to pick up a Motorola phone that released in 2012, then why not score a $100 credit for your troubles? Motorola CLIQ 2 gets 1.1.30 update, brings fixes and new apps to your slider
Whether it was the honeycomb keyboard, the FWVGA display or that new phone smell, the intoxication of owning a new CLIQ 2 masked the unpleasant odors within this device. Thankfully, a new update from Motorola promises to clear the air with improved battery life, fewer instances of apps crashing, and better haptic responses when typing. The list of improvements is substantial, so you'll want to check the source if you stand to benefit. After completing the OTA install, users will notice four new applications await, including: Lookout Mobile Security, MobiTV, Motorola's Family Room, and UNO. That's a lot to swallow if you're just wanting your phone to work properly. Even if you'd prefer doing without the added bloat, we're guessing CLIQ 2 fans will still want a whiff of this frozen yogurt laden with toppings. [Thanks, Carlos]
Motorola updates Motoblur and Media Link client for Macs and PCs
A couple of changes for Motorola this morning. First up is a new version of Moto's Media Link iTunes sync software. Media Link version 1.5 is available now for Mac users or March for the beige box bunch. More importantly, perhaps, is a new version of Motoblur with enhanced location, messaging, music, and gallery features. The new Connected Music service features streaming lyrics and a social aspect that lets you follow the tracks your friends are listening to. Connected Gallery unites your photos and videos with your friends' online albums from sites like Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, and Picasa. Aloga, meanwhile, is a Motoblur-integrated location-triggered push platform that provides third-party publishers with information about your location, identity, and social relationships. The idea is to offer users non-intrusive information about places, events, or bargains for the "channels" they select. Look for the new Motoblur to arrive on "recently announced devices" like the Cliq 2 and Atrix 4G. Full detail in the press release after the break.
HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Motorola Cliq 2... fight!
HTC's ThunderBolt along with Motorola's Atrix 4G and Droid Bionic might be taking the overwhelming majority of the attention here at CES over the past few days, but remember that both companies have introduced some other models that are expected to be serious midrange breadwinners for their respective carriers. One of the most obvious head-to-head matches would be the HTC EVO Shift 4G taking on the Motorola Cliq 2, both launching this month on Sprint and T-Mobile, respectively. %Gallery-113461%
Motorola Cliq 2, first hands-on
So, now you know what Motorola's Cliq 2 is all about, but how does it feel? Much like a cheaper, curvier Droid 2, to tell you the truth -- as you'd expect when the device comes saddled with very similar specs. It's pleasantly weighty like the Droid, and similarly stylish, though the capacitive touchscreen didn't respond quite as readily to our touch, though that could be the effect of the hefty MOTOBLUR UI layer rather than an issue with the digitizer. The keyboard's actually a bit more tactile, with domed soft rubber keys, and the hexagonal honeycomb arrangement felt refreshing compared to the some of the buttons we're used to. We didn't have loads of time with the unit, but it could be a decent alternative to the T-Mobile G2. Motorola launches CLIQ 2 on T-Mobile
Motorola's CLIQ 2 and its crazy honeycomb sliding keypad just stepped into the limelight at CES and surprise, surprise looks exactly like the pic we saw a couple weeks back. This set packs a 1GHz processor, 5MP shooter, WiFi calling, a hotspot for up to 5 devices, and a 3.7-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) display. The jury's out on exactly how that keyboard is going to behave while pounding your digits against it in a messaging frenzy, but a hands-on will sort that real quick. Motorola Cliq 2 pictures hit the outside world?
What, you didn't forget about the Cliq series, did you? The followup to Motorola and T-Mobile's slider's been long rumored -- we heard a few morsels of information back in September -- and now CellPhoneSignal has a few pics of what it claims is the Begonia, aka Cliq 2 (for T-Mobile, naturally). The keyboard here is, well, interesting, to say the least, and there's also apparently a five megapixel camera on the back. We're not really sure how our thumbs feel about the layout, but if this is legit, we'd reckon they'll get to try it out themselves sooner or later. Motorola 'Begonia' is T-Mobile's Cliq 2, features WiFi calling?
We've been tossed a few scraps of information in the past few hours on T-Mobile's upcoming Cliq 2 -- codenamed "Begonia" -- and though we don't know much, what we do know is enough to be a little excited about. Here's what we've got: Android 2.2 with Blur Keyboard design is said to be "interesting" -- in a good way -- described as "one solid piece" without any gaps between keys. The Cliq's is pretty decent, and with both the myTouch 3G Slide and G2 in the mix now, they've got a lot to live up to 3G hotspot support, something the G2 will lack at launch WiFi calling, which we've heard a little about recently Word is that the Cliq 2 is slated for a November 1 launch, though it's not clear how it'll be positioned -- if we had to venture a shot-in-the-dark guess, it'd be priced to go head to head with the myTouch 3G Slide.
