Socket OrganizeIT - Barcode utility for the really organized
Remember the John Cusack character from "High Fidelity?" The guy who was so obsessive about keeping his record collection organized that it became a metaphor for his life? They've finally come out with a program just for him. Socket OrganizeIT Suite is a CD/DVD organization program that includes a Palm or Pocket PC-compatible barcode scanner and software that can retrieve Web-based data associated with items in your collection. The idea is that, if you have a few hours to kill, you can scan your barcodes and build a database that you can reference as needed. We can think of a few uses for the program, but at $299, it seems a little steep for anyone who doesn't have a massive collection (and the time to scan it). For $40, the Mac-only Delicious Library does many of the same things, also works with games and books, and can use any iSight-compatible camera as a scanner if you don't want to shell out $175 for the developer's Bluetooth scanner.
