TimeTrax turns iPod into a satellite radio time shifter
Just in time for CES, TimeTrax are showing off a new docking station and software suite that will allow users to record satellite radio programming on their iPods. TimeTrax allows one to schedule recordings ahead of time and record them directly to their iPod. It also grabs the artist and song info available from satellite and embeds it as metadata in the song files. To help get the thing to market and not piss of Sirius or XM, err, to help dissuade people from sharing the content, TimeTrax embeds the serial number of the software into each recorded program. No Mac version is in the works, however.

This is obviously a very cool gadget, but why does it have to look like a 7th grade shop project? Who is nailing this to their desk?

Since the XM Direct box isn't the prettiest thing in the world to begin with (it's intended to be mounted under a vehicle dash or in the trunk), I'd say that doesn't look too bad. But my comments about TimeTrax are... first, you're limited to 16 characters each for artist/title info, resulting in some nicely cut-off names... Second, I don't consider putting the radio ID in the ID3 tag embedding it in the file, because ID3 tags are easily changable. Unless someone can prove me wrong, I believe that's all they're doing to prevent distribution/file sharing.

BE CAREFUL WITH THESE GUYS -
FOR A $35.00 SOFTWARE PRODUCT WHY DO THEY REQ "ONLINE INTERNET ACTIVATION" AND WHY DO THEY RECORD AND SAVE YOUR IP ADDRESS IN THEIR REGISTRATION CODE?
SOME THING SMELLS HERE - COULD BE A FUTURE LIABILITY PROBLEM TO ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO SUBSCRIBES TO THEIR TIVO LIKE SOFTWARE.
THANK YOU,
MAX
