Sirius announces partnership with Microsoft to launch video in 2006
XM may have the MLB, but we're seeing the scales tip the other way much more quickly these days: Sirius has officially announced their plans to go video in 2006 (totally beating XM to the punch) in partnership with Microsoft; they will apparently "use software" from them, but we're assuming this is going to mean they'll be using CE.net or Windows Mobile on their video-ready devices. This just after Sirius got the NFL, Ford, Eminem, and Howard Stern? It's looking rough for XM, man, looking rough.

Actually, Sirius does has the NFL - XM just has major league baseball.
Sirius has the NFL, not XM. XM has MLB.
Imagine if they could stream in a live video feed from the studio of Howard. I'd drive my car off the road during the morning commute.
XM's toast. Sirius has Mel Carmison (sp?).
Mel Karmazin... and Howard... and live streaming video. Sounds like Sirius is getting serious. I've got my planned purchase this year. Just hoping Sirius does a portable unit like the one for XM that was recently released.
Cool down man, It's only tech. It's not life or death.
Swiss Cow...
I never knew a cow could be that big of an ass. You must have been getting poked by your cattle prod while you were writing that extremely rude comment. If you don't like what you read here, please leave, and don't let the barn door hit you on the way out.
the swiss cow may be abrasive, but he is right. with mel "satellite radio is a failed business model" karmizin siri is continuing the trend of management by press release and doing non-economic deals. ever notice how empty HOV lane on the highway is- that is why video in the car is a niche.
Sirius is getting all this attention because of Stern, but it's not necessarily the better company. I know that means nothing (Beta vs. VHS, etc), but XM is by no means a dead commodity - by last count, it had over 2 million more subscribers. Mel doesn't really mean anything at this point, although the hype they're generating is rather impressive.
Funny Americans,
willingly to even pay for RADIO
Klaus, du bist ein arscheloch.
Their first programming will be kids tv stuff. This will not be just niche stuff. Why would I want to risk/hassle/mess with DVD's in the car when I can put the Disney channel on?.
Judging from how my kid loves Sirius's kids radio programming - I am looking forward to this!
Sebhelyesfarku, du bist nicht gut! :)
Hey, I have XM and tried Sirrus last year. It sucked then and still sucks. Ya, it's got NFL (which this Cali Steelers fan really wanted this year!), but that's ONE thing. Stern? Who cares about an old man with a potty mouth. I graduated high school fifteen years ago, I don't need childish stuff on my radio.
I agree that these announcements, especially the Ford deal, is BIG. XM needs to do something or they take a risk losing their lead. I really don't want to invest in radio equipment (three tuners) but if I have to, I will it it means I get the better in the end. Hope XM realizes there's others like me on their system and this will encourage them to get moving and stop thinking their two-headed baby isn't going to do it!
I still think XM has a better chance of taking Sirius over than the other way round. Hope they don't lose the focus with the video to mobile tangent...making great audio content is the only way to keep this concept flying - and profitable one day. Remember there is already a 10 year old satellite radio system up there called Worldspace (same technology as XM Radio) which is a perfect example of technology driven and creatively crippled - 1.2 billion dollars and a few hundred thousand subscribers at best. World Space is living up to its name....no epg, and a very peculiar idea of how to make passionate international programming.
do you understand how long its going to take for that to even work..do you even understand how far behind siruis is behind in technology from xm? its sad ...call me or email me when i dont have to mount a boom box into my car...now im looking at a boom box and a tv thats gonna be soo choppy because sirius is going to take forever to work on it with mircrosoft..im sorry i dont see this being big
Your getting excited about VIDEO!!
First of all, at the 2004 CES Sirius announced that it would launch video in mid-2005 with about 4 and possibly up to 8 channels for children.
Now at the 2005 CES that got moved back to mid-2006 and now only 2 or 3 channels for children. When is it gonna get rough for Sirius? At the 2006 CES when they announce video for late-2007 with only 1 channel for children?
Rough for XM? I don't know what planet this site is on, but MLB on radio blows NFL out of the water hands down. There are FAR more MLB games, FAR more adverts, FAR more listeners (football is for WATCHING folks). Sirius HAD to sign Stern, or they'd be dead.
Sirius's technology, and chipsets, are 18 months BEHIND XM's....wake up! Video? big whoop, where are they going to get the bandwidth? Who's going to fork over hundreds of MORE dollars to get video equipment when it's far more convenient and cheaper to have the kids watch a portable DVD player?
Again, I don't know what all the hype is about....it's just hype....and apparantly this site is anti-XM. There's room for BOTH satellite services.

*****Live video.... How "small" is this unit going to be. Would you have to have a SUV to trailer this unit around!! Way to go Sirius, you have done it again. Get your radios smaller first. Baby steps! *********Opie and Anthony, party rock!
