Will you be able to use the PlayStation Portable as a cellphone?
They were showing off a mock-up for a cellphone-like
attachment for the PlayStation Portable at E3 last May, so maybe this shouldn't exactly come as a shocker, but
buried at the bottom of this story about how Sony is increasing production of their new portable game console, is a
little teaser from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO and president Ken Kutaragi about how they might be adding a mobile
phone function to the PSP in the near future. It's hard to imagine anyone who already owns a cellphone wanting to make
calls with a PSP instead (we won't even touch the issue of battery life), but maybe they'll swipe a page from Nokia's
N-Gage playbook and introduce a way for people to compete head-to-head over a cellphone data connection. Or
something.

i doubt there will be any PSP cellphone anytime soon, unless the agreement between SONY and SONY ERICSSON does not exist anymore, i've read about it a while back @ brighthand.com, on why sony has never made any palm powered phone, this is the same reason why they would NEVER make any sony PSP cellphone. Competition between their own division, SONY and SONY ERICSSON!
Yeah, that's why I think they're more likely to offer some sort of wireless gaming add-on rather than something for making phone calls. Or they could just get Sony Ericsson to make the phone module and work around that obstacle.
I smell N-Gage...
It sounds like that Playstation portable will be too bulky, unless there was some kind of ear bud attachment with mouthpiece. I am not holding it up to my ear! And I could see them making the same mistake as Nokia, don't just throw it together unless it is going to be quality...
Well I'm rooting for Nintendo, so I hope Sony goes fullsteam ahead with it's Convergence plans.. lmfao
a PSP based cell phone? let me guess... 75 minutes standby... 9 minutes talk time. impressive.
Nah. My Treo 650 would get jealous and kick it's ass.
I think it's a cool concept; I don't understand why any sony fan wouldn't support this. I have a treo 650 btw and it doesn't do everything well (the camera bites and sound quality issues plague this phone even with the patch the audio captured when in video mode is absolutley unforgiveable) I'd love it as an extra feature. It would even be greater if there were room for a sim card of some sort and I do here they are trying to simulate a sim card with their memory sticks. This would be great as a world phone alternative. Play the psp on the plane; check email etc make calls when u get off the plane. I'd do it; I wish you guys would be a little more open minded. The fact that Apple is rumored to integrate it into future ipods (rumor) and this agreement with motorola is definitley the reason Sony is considering such a thing.
If it's sony I'm for it; i remember back in the early 90's when the sony psx was just a rumored add-on to the super famicom/super nintendo; remember that port on the bottom that was never used!? Remember Nintendo pulling a fast one on sony and making an agreement with Phillips. Remember 1995 NOS (ninth of september)? I do; The playstation became a reality and videogaming has never been the same!
I think Sony is going to gangbust the portable market; I've got two psp's on pre-order already; i'll make it three if this cell phone thing is a reality.
I don't think Sony wants to swipe any pages from N-gage's playbook. Tapwave's playbook would be a bit better. The PSP with a modified Palm OS that would allow classic console emulators would be very cool. (If they ever get past the terrible battery life issues.)
Man, I was JUST saying the PSP should hook up with some Cellphone hardware in a comment last week! Clearly what we need is LESS junk in our pockets, not more. A little cellphone hardware in a handheld could save carrying a cellphone. Unfortunately, I kinda doubt Sprint will support it, even if it does reach US shores(the best phone stuff always stays in Asia!). But man, if it did, I got unlimited Sprint Vision service so I could be playing online ALL the time! Just picture an MMORPG you can play well in line at McDonalds!
Of course, I also said that in about 5 years, there will be no more hand-held consoles. Just cellphones with 3D accelerators and games you can play across cellphone platforms. Your only question will be then; what cellphone design is best for gameplay?
Heed my words, mere Mortals! The Great Karnack has Spoken!
i want to join so, because the interest i have in it.
