The Economist endorses open WiFi standards

It's always nice when a conservative magazine like The Economist sides with the little guys instead of big business. In a recent editorial about neighborhood WiFi networks, the magazine comes down clearly on the side of openness, declaring that Broadcom and Atheros are hurting communities by not allowing network operators access to detailed info about their chips. Do we think the companies will listen and provide the APIs that developers need, since the message is coming from The Economist and not, say, Slashdot or 2600? No. But at least it makes it a more mainstream issue, which certainly shouldn't hurt.
