Maybe barely pocketable if you're rocking the XXXL cargo pants, Mitsubishi just announced the PocketProjector, a tiny DLP projector that weighs just 14 ounces and has a resolution of 800 x 600 (which is plenty good for all your non-high def needs). Should be out in July with a retail price of $699.
That's good, I can't wait to see a review on how good that thing performs. A projector which you can easily carry around and stowaway everywhere was missing until now.
I wonder if that's the start of even smaller projectors to come?
Just make sure you got a solid case for it. I could see that easily breaking in my throw crap in my backseat lifestyle. but otherwise... ME WANTS IT!!!
Get a small case that lets you slot in one of these and a Mac-mini. Maybe a third slot for an expansion (external) hard disk. Put a handle on top of the case and you have a media center on the go.
Someone Needs to combine this with a PDA and a virtual keyboard...and have a totally ultimate portable presentation machine. Maybe the tech isnt quite there yet for the virtual KB, but that would be SO DOPE.
kalahari surfer: If it's DLP (which I thought was a Samsung propietary technology, but I could be mistaken), then expect to see a 1024x768, or possibly even higher, version for somewhat more money. They've already got DLP devices running at 1280x760, which is a higher total number of pixels, so it should be hard to get to 1024x768.
This is perfect, just what i have been waiting for. Now i can have this projector mounted to the roof of my car for display on the rear hatch. And 20khrs, that's nutz, will easily last the life of the vehicle, heck life of the user (20khrs ~= 55 yrs @ 1 hr/day)
Since this thing uses LEDs for a light source shouldn't the lights last for many, many years? I'll give up some quality for a projector that never needs a new light.
$700 PLUS no need to ever the lights just made a great deal an incredible deal. I'll get one this summer.
You might want to check out the two other LED-DLP projectors that were developed alongside the Mitsubishi version. According to the article, the Infocus LED projector is estimated to be ~$500!! I already have an Infocus X1 ($800), but this may make a fantastic second projector for consumers.
Looks great! I already use a portable projector but this seems to be the next level. I use the IRMA Bluetooth device http://www.infrablue.co.uk so I can make my presentations wirelessly from my PDA (HP IPAQ 4150). Now I cam make notebook free really mobile presentations.
Yea, the LED version of this little guy is going to crush the non HD market. $699-$799 retail and a 20,000 hour bulb life! God know what the bulbs will cost, but they can't be more then the projector so its not a bad deal!
This product seems to be strong for people who like longevity(lamp life), but weak for contrastlumination minded consumers. Personally, the mere idea of a portable TV or tiny mobile presenter is incredible! To round out this thought, I will buy one to find out, if it can handle a Movie from my car, and hopeful i will be able to pipe the sounds thru my car speaker system. But if not i will promptly return it.
I spoke to Mitsubishi, and they said that it was going to be delayed until the first week of December. I also heard that it is going to have 205lux of brightness, which I have read is horrible. http://www.mitsubishi-presentations.com/proj_pocket.asp is the page on the projector.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

I really want a small projector but 800x600 does not cut it for demos though. Gotta have at least 1024x768 these days.

These guys say they have the tech for matchbox sized laser projectors.
Actually what I'd like to see is a projector that uses DLP that uses inexpensive (<$20) projector bulbs. Does anything like this currently exist?

DLP is Texas Instruments proprietary tech.

A little less than six inches square, and two inches thick. Should stack perfectly atop a Mac mini!
There's already a 1024x768 version out from Viewsonic a long time ago:

The Mitsubitshi one doesn't mention how bright it is though, which is a major factor.

It uses the Luxeon K2 LED(s) by lumileds.
Did this thing reach the market? Any shops where I can buy one? Never heard of it again...
