JVC's new LCoS-based D-ILA flat-panel TVs
Still waiting to see whether they'll roll these out over here, but JVC is making for their new line of
LCoS-based (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) D-ILA
TVs (which also happen to be
HDMI-capable). Neither LCoS nor HDMI
are huge yet here in North America, but in Japan it sounds like HDMI is really taking off, and despite
numerous problems with LCOS technology, JVC seems to be
forging ahead with it and, from all we can tell, have been pretty successful with it.

I think the editors have been sleeping. D-ILA TVs have been available in the US for like over a year!

I really don't see what is so great about HDMI? Who actually uses the speakers on the tv? And how many computer have an HDMI output? I'll take DVI anyday.

I think the editors know the JVC HD-ILA TVs have been available in the US for some time now. I think they are saying that the next generation of them is being intro'd in Japan. I was hoping they would have some more specifics. The link provided is in Japanese, which I unfortunately do not speak/read. So, what is special about the next gen?
I am thinking about buying one of these sets, but the reliability of them seems to be in question. The picture is awesome on the one that I have seen at Best Buy. Very bright and clear without being too edgy. Mostly noticed on skin tones, which seemed to be smooth and consistent. Not the case for some other sets.
I also wish they would bring a smaller HD-ILA out. 52" is just too big for my living room. I would love to see a 42-46" version.

Official JVC U.S. Comment: JVC introduced our HD-ILA rear projection HDTVs (using our LCOS-based D-ILA chips) in July 2003. In fact, the U.S. is the ONLY market where they are available. They roll out into the rest of the world market later this year. The line expands here in the U.S. this spring.

the tv is a good tv. if i was in the market for a 2500 dollar tv I would consider this tv. One of the problems I have with tv is that it is only 1st gen when DLP is about to release its 4th gen chips.

The only gripe I have with the JVCs are that they are a monitor. Put the HDTV tuner in them already!

Official JVC U.S. Comment: In answer to "ecirwin" above -- You can read our press release about our new HD-ILA line at: http://www.jvc.com/press/press.jsp?item=445
As for reliability, we (JVC) have used the technology in professional front projectors since 1997. Our proprietary version of LCOS (D-ILA) overcomes the problems other have had with the technology. And it's strictly our technology -- we make the chips ourselves in our own plants.

"And how many computer have an HDMI output? I'll take DVI anyday."
HDMI is an extension of the DVI spec, so you would want an older and inferior spec?

Word on avsforum.com is that, although other manufacturers (Sony and others) have had major problems with LCOS defects, JVC's D-ILA version of LCOS is stable and ready to go. LCOS may be first-gen, but JVC has been making D-ILA for a while now.
