Dell's 24-inch 2405FPW LCD monitor is real
It was bad enough that we had to face the rumors that
Dell was coming out with a 24-inch
widescreen LCD monitor just two days after we finally succumbed to temptation and ordered the
2005FPW, their 20-inch widescreen
LCD, but today the 2405FPW went from rumor to reality. And as you'd expect, it's a monster of a display. The 2405FPW
has the same resolution as the 23-inch Apple Cinema
Display (1920x1200), but has a faster pixel response time (12ms vs 16ms), a built-in 4 port USB hub (the Cinema
Display has two USB and two FireWire ports), and a 9-in-1 flash memory card reader. Say what you want about their PCs
(and believe us, we have), Dell does it up right with their displays. We're crazy in love with the 2005FPW and expect
to be insanely jealous when Ryan breaks down and buys the 2405FPW. Should be out next month, no word on pricing.
[Thanks, Ed and David]

I'm guessing an Arm & Leg
The rumor is, around a thousand.
awcrap!
I just got the 2005FPW three days ago and now this!
The only complaint (minor) is that the usb hub is usb 1, kinda a buzz kill.
But the LCD is perfect, no dead or stuck pixels.
Not a bad deal for $550.
I wonder if the 2405FPW's hub is usb 2?
Hrmm....
Anyone else notice that the monitor in this picture is showing the default background from Mac OS X?
Oh. My. God.
I love my Dell 1900FP, but 1280x1024 is so 2002. This, I fear, must be mine.
The price point really isn't so bad when you take a look at the others in that category.
Looks just like Apple's original 13" (or was it 14"?) display with that base.
It seems heretical to say it, but with a native resolution of 1920x1200 and the USB and FireWire hubs, could this be the perfect (if slightly fugly) display for the Mac mini?
I've had (as have many others apparently -- search http://www.neowin.net for the FPW2005 thread) issues with the FPW2005. I certainly hope that they've ironed out the backlighting problems when they release this screen.
Sigh--how to convince my S.O. that we now need a 24" LCD and a 20"?
anyone know if my radeon9800 pro that came w/my dell a year and a half ago can support two of these bad-boys? (i got 2 17" LCD now)....
pete,
How did you get the 2005 for under 600 dollars? I havent been able to get it down below that all important mark!
(around xmas, I heard of people getting this monitor for under 500 bucks after some crazy rebates... wish that were still true)
-Brendna
Look more cloesly at the side portion, the breaks in the plastic resemble card reader slots. Possibility?
The only thing I kind of disklike about the USB hubs, is while they are cool on the monitor for jamming in a USB drive and running, it is kind of a cracked out place for putting anything longterm. (e.g. A keyboard)
Ignore my last comment about the card slots; I bet reading the desciption a little more throoughly would be a better bet next time, sorry.

$1199
I {> my 2005 FPW, which cost me 554 shipped, but I might be ebaying it for this bad larry. Only problem is my 9600 might have trouble pushing the pixels for anything beyond just desktop use.
To the guy above,if you want to keep up with how to get dell stuff cheap with rebates, keep an eye on http://techbargains.com/. Every couple of days they post the latest Dell goods. They up date the site every couple of hours on other stuff, so just scroll down to find the last Dell stuff, or wait a day or two for the latest. I remember seeing the 2005 for the crazy price and just couldn't spend the money at the time.

So it is like 600 dollars less than the apple display, yet it uses a superiour panel. Yea im running towards that "cinema" display.
the 2005 has usb 2 not usb 1, I don't know where you got that idea.
Damnit....I just bought the 2005FPW too. I got it for $549 on the Dell Small Business website. You just gotta keep an eye on them because they switch it up a lot. I love my 20"...and I span it with my 15" Powerbook with no issues at all.
the 2405 has built in composite, component and svideo too. How cool.
Looks pretty swank. I work at a video production house, and I want to know... will the component support HD signals, or only SD? For that kinda coin, we'd love to get one or two of these for use as cheap HD monitors. Avid's promising HD-thru-DVI for their new Adrenaline HD cards. I'm already henpecking my bosses to buy a couple of 2005FPWs as edit suite computer monitors. I have one at home, and it's FANTASTIC. When it came down to $550, I almost bought another on principle. I might sell my 2005 in and get this puppy instead. After giving Dell a couple months to iron out the requisite backlight and dead pixel problems. However, I can't reccommend the 2005 enought.
YEAH...This was the only gift I wanted for valentines day! Now I just hope my Radeon 9600m with only 64mb of memory can power this thing playing WoW.
I have an IBM T42 and I tried running my laptop on one of my schools Sony 23" widescreens. It seemed to work ok with the modded ATI drivers giving me the option to run at 1920x1200, but I only had my VGA cable with me, so everything looked kind of crappy. I am hoping this was just the VGA cable not being able to support such a high res signal. I might go back and try it again, but last time someone needed to use the editing station and my notebook tests were deemed less of a priority by the lab staff.
Has anyone been able to run at this res with only 64mb of vid mem with any success beyond normal desktop use?
Thx
mabye someone can help me out with this, i have a 21" Planar LCD right now, and I am wondering if the widescreen 24" will actually have a larger vertical size thank mine, the native width resolution is larger yes (by 320 pixels) but the native height resolution is the same...
Dell is slowly killing me... I know i am going to be thinking about the 24" every time I look at my 2005fpw. Plus it has component video in... ugh..
Only saving grace is that I got my 20" for $450. And just like #8 i am going to have a hard time convincing my SO to allow me to get another expensive toy.
This monitor uses the same LCD Panel as the Samsung SyncMaster 24xT. Its not out yet but will be introduced at the CEBIT show in Germany. Now we just have to see which one has the better control chip, features and price of course.
Good thing I bought the 2001FP almost 6 months ago. If I waited any longer, I would have caved and spent almost double the amount for the 24 inch version.
For the most part, I am extremely happy with my 2001FP. Crisp display, easy to use, and very small footprint compared to my old 19" CRT monitor

FINALLY! I also bought a 2001FP (about a year ago), and have had my eye on the apple widescreen displays for a while now as an upgrade. It would be nice to have a firewire hub(like the apple) - but the memory card reader is a great addition!
I have a couple of gripes with the 2001FP, but for the price it's worth the gripes. Also dell is very good about dead pixels- and even do advance swap stuff without too much fuss...
Extremetech has a review up www.extremetech.com Price is quoted at 1200 dollars not including rebates coupons or discounts that they always run
Ugly, is the only comment that comes to mind.
Joey Geraci -
I just tested the hub last night with a usb 2 thumbdrive and it picked it up as a usb 1 device.
I'll check again tonight with other usb 2 devices, but the only other thing I can think to check is to see if i plugged the hub into a usb 1 port on my pc (bonehead maneuver).
Can any other 2005FPW owners confirm the "usb 2-fulness" of the hub?
Why aren't usb hubs version agnostic anyway? dammit. grrr...
whewy that is ugllyyyy....i'd pass it up for the apple cinema display anyday....being that it's 24" shouldn't its rez be more than the 23" cinema display? but faster pixel response is nicee....still, my money goes straight to the cinema display...who can deny its gorgeous clean thin simple aluminum body w/ a stand w/o extra fuggly stuff? btw, to anyone thinking that the wall is the same as the default one on mac os 10.3, they're wrong...it looks like it, but trust me it isn't (i have it on my mac right now...) ;)
Not good enough. I bought the 23" wide screen Sony and then returned it. This size display should have a much higher resolution. As they are the pixels are just too hugh and uncomfortable to look at. My notebook is 1600x1200 (0.19mm pitch) on a 15" display. Why can I not buy a desktop LCD display with this size dot pitch?
To all of you saying this thing is "ugly" - sure, it doesn't have the cool aluminum simplicity of a CinemaDisplay, but in trade, you get a *gasp* adjustable stand you can comfortably rotate (great for vertical shooters in MAME) and shell out much less dough. The screen on the 2005 is so clear and bright, I don't notice the industrial design anyways.
Now, add the Dell "Sound Bar" and it's ugly as all hell, I'll agree with you then.
I did some calculations and it turns out the dot pitch is about 0.275mm. A bit larger than the 23" Cinema Displays', but it does seems like it'd be better for casual use, and at at least not any worse.
Bonehead update:
I mis-plugged. The hub is usb 2.
duh
I have the 2005 FPW and love it.
It's spec's beat the Apple in every catagory, except it has 4 USB 2.0 ports instead of 2/USB 2/Firewire.
Here's the spec's on the 2005:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2005FPW/English/about.htm#Specifioications
I have been using it for 2 months and it works flawlessly.
It has VGA, DVI, Composite and S-video inputs.
If the new one works as good as this then it will be a big hit!
I have no backlight problems at all and neither do most owners.
For accurate, up to date info on Dell and their often changing coupons and deals, check out:http://www.xpbargains.com/dell_coupons/
Terrific site, almost bought the 2001FP for 681.00, then saw a Dell 25% off deal that can be combined with a stackable 45$ off. Unfortunately, the stackable $55 off coupon had already maxed out on 2000 uses. Guess it pays to get up early.
I appreciate all of your advice and comments on this thread, but now dammit, I am re-interested in the 2005WP. I'm just really leery of the much documented back light and pixel problems. Do you think they have ironed that out yet? If you check out the Dell 'Outlet', they have FAR more 2005WP than anything else. For several days, how many 2001FP have been in Outlet inventory ? 0. I think that's very telling.
Peace
I'm not sufficiently screen wise to know this - it seems assumed this 24" will run off a Mac. The Dell site says "compatible with Windows XP, (and one other, I forget which)" Are we sure this Dell is Mac friendly? Some monitors (Like the big Samsung) list a seperate "Mac" resoultion in the fine print, which is a lower resolution than the WIndows res, and I assume looks like crap since it must somehow be interpolated.
I also got 2 2001fps around 6 months ago (around $510 each shipped). I'm thinking of getting the 2405fp and slapping it right in the middle of the other two for some wicked ass surround gaming. Need another graphics card, of course, but as it is now, all FPS games get split right at the crosshairs, which makes playing impossible.
Dell really hit a home run with this screen.
It may be ugly compared to the Apple - but there are just too many other things that make it great.
1) It is high res and HD ready and has all of the proper ports to support it. (So is the Apple, but an extra inch on a widescreen LCD diagonal translates into a good bit more space)
2) It has a built 9-in-1 card reader.
3) 12ms response time - that is bar none the best we've seen in an LCD of this size.
4) The price. The 23" Apple is $1799 ($1599 with student discounts). The Dell is supposed to be ~1100. Plus we all know how liberal Dell is with coupon codes to get 10-20% or more off.
Honestly, I love the design on the Apple - but this Dell is just too well equipped and featured to pass up - especially when you consider that you're paying $600-800 less for a bigger, faster display with the same res and more features.
WOW...Once again Dell slays the competition. At an introductory price $1079.10 and USB2 and firewire ports this is all WINNER!

Michael Dell if your reading this (LOL) send me one for my positive indorsement.
Hey 42:
I'm in a similar situation - got two Dell 2001FPs. Wondering what the dimensions of this are so if it goes in the middle, will it be physically taller than the other screens?
Anyone any ideas on exact dimensions including Bezel?
I hope you bought yours because they just took them off the site within the last day and say they are not going to offer them anymore. Too bad - I was going to order one today :(
what are the viewing angles for this one ? 2405 fpw (dell) I learnt from http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html that the viewing angles are 170 degrees.
I just bought this monitor and I love it. The only thing is that I have it on a Micron desktop and I may not have the best driver and or video card for it. Its a bit on the blurry side. Not real bad just barely. I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX card. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure whether you still interested to exchange your monitor to 2405fpw. It is a huge monitor that is excellent for individual and family ofcourse. In fact, I just got mine a month ago. When I did some research. this kindly gentleman gave me 1-800-526-1744 # and I got only $780. Gosh!! It is weird. But this company neilson distribution only sell overstock. So if you are still interested but out of budget. Dont call dell.! do some shopping first!
On my XP machine, with a VIA USB 2.0 card, only half the USB ports work on the 2005FPW. They seemed to work when it was connected to my Mac G5. It shows up as a generic hub. Doesn't say 2.0, even though it is in the 2.0 slot. Any updates to the hub driver or anyone else seen this?
