Sony promises one million PSPs in stores on launch day
You might not have to worry quite so much about not being able to get your hands on the
PlayStation Portable when it goes on sale here in exactly
23 days, Sony says they're going to boost production so that they'll have a million consoles actually in stores on
launch day.
[Thanks, Uber-Review]

I really don't want or need a PSP, but I'm thinking of buying one just to piss off all the moronic Nintendo fanboys constantly talking about "innovation". I've seen that f---ing plumber for over two decades now.
What's that birth control pill box looking thing?
bump
" I've seen that f---ing plumber for over two decades now."
LOL, haha,
man..UK date is still April 29th? by this time japan will have Gen 2 PSP,
#1: "I've seen that f---ing plumber for over two decades now."
Clearly you're a communist. Who doesn't like Mario?!
You're doing what to the plumber? For shame. Remember, crack kills.
k-balls:
The plumber is a mascot like Mickey Mouse, Ronald McDonald, etc.
People are rooting for Nintendo because the company has played the most major role in shaping the video game experience in all its unique forms. All sony and Microsoft have done is repackage it to better target an adult audience. [I do recognize the importance of this] Nintendo is a toy company which has been around for a hundred years. Their playful attitude offers a great deal to the evelotion of video games.
I found the speed and graphics of the last generation of video game systems to be incredible. Game environments were so rich that it almost became distracting. Aside from network gaming, further imporvements to video game systems need to be more creative and Nintendo has always been the company to push this element.
@JChan,
That thing is the UMD, or Universal Media Disc. It's the format of choice for the Sony PSP. It's sort of like a mini-DVD inside a plastic shell. If you turn one over, you'll see that there's a little window for it to actually be read. Sony and their crazy formats.
No gapless playback?
I'm getting a DS.
". . .further imporvements (sic) to video game systems need to be more creative and Nintendo has always been the company to push this element."
You only get credit for pushing if you win. Nintendo hasn't been "winning" for many years. Innovation like what Apple has done is what I look for from Nintendo - not klunky, unappealing bricks like the DS.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Senor Plumber. But it seems that in order for a Nintendo game to work, he needs to be in it. Not exactly a formula for variety or "innovation".
"You only get credit for pushing if you win."
Not true at all. Nintendo pioneered Analog Joysticks(on a home console that is), They were also the first to offer 4 controller ports as standard. With all this heavily copied innovation, The N64 was clearly second to the PS.
Nintendo and Apple are very similar in a lot of ways. They both make decisions that seem like suicide and yet continue on course, even without a leadership position in the market. I see Nintendo becoming a niche specialty brand. , just like Apple did. And what is so wrong about that?
Bob. I agree completely. Nintendo could use a great 'fashion' designer to make the franchise popular with cooler aesthetics. Also yes, good point their games have depended on long established icons. I don't really care though, Warioware was brilliant...the first one anyway which fetishized the most basic action in games and abstracted more complex life actions with intuative button combinations. There really was no need for a sequal.
Still, I can't think of any other company [even outside videogaming] which is as rebelious as Nintendo to consistantly challenge the norm, or the obvious [safest] advancement within the market. This type of characteristic will never sell as much as the 'more and faster' attitude. I support Nintendo because I value their effort to force change, wether it catches on or not...for me it is about the experience.
"People are rooting for Nintendo because the company has played the most major role in shaping the video game experience in all its unique forms."
I'm not. I'm rooting for them because they are the last true video game company left making video game consoles. I don't pretend they're all that influential anymore.
It will be a sad day when the only console manufacturers in the industry are massive electronics and computer conglomerates. And relative n00bs to boot. I don't even care whether Nintendo innovates; the video game industry should be run by video game people. Not by Microsoft and Sony.
I honestly couldn't even tell you the last fun game I played that was developed by either Sony or MS. Seriously. (I'm playing GT4 now, and while it's impressive, I wouldn't really call it "fun" in a Katamari Damacy sort of way.) These guys know how to make franchises that sell, but they don't know how to make fun games. Nintendo does, innovative or not. They grew up as a company on video games. Microsoft grew up as a company on operating systems. Sony grew up as a company on transistor radios. Which would you rather have in charge of your interactive entertainment options?
and btw, I know Katamari Damacy was developed by Namco, I was just using it as an example. (Namco's another of the old-timers - wish they still made more games like that.)
May be sad but I see Nintendo going the same way as SEGA did....
... but then I could get some of those decent niche games on my XBox! Who knows? Maybe the plumber will get a chance on a decent system that is not just aimed at kids with quirky control pads and the like. Nintendo failed it's original youths like me by not growing up as I did!!!!
great news...that lifts a bunch of weight off my shoulders.
"I honestly couldn't even tell you the last fun game I played that was developed by either Sony or MS. Seriously."
Uh, genius, you do know that individuals actually develop the game? They aren't coded by some giant supercomputer called "Sony" or "Microsoft".
And this is the really interesting part...Sony AND Microsoft actually go out and HIRE so-called "videogame people". Gosh, I'm sure there are even some people who used to work for Nintendo but now work for (or with) Sony or Microsoft.
Face it - you are merely trying to justify being a "brand slave". Sad, but true.

#14, i agree completely. Nintendo f-ed up by not growing up as their core fans did. They should have produced more mature games as their core fans matured. Instead they tried to capture the new generation of young gamers and force us, now, older games to still play Mario-style games. This allowed Sony to step in and fill the void.
There's always the arguement that it doesn't matter if a game is childish... as long as it's fun...blah blah. BS, I say! I grew up on Mario, and it's still fun at times, but now I want games like HL2, Halo, GT4, Splinter Cell, etc. Nintendo doesn't have much to offer there so my money will go else where.
In addition, the current mentality of younger kids is that they want to be and act older. Therefore I don't think the current generation of younger kids are into Mario type games as much as my generation was. They are convinced by the media (Sony, MS, etc) to want more realistic and mature games.
Well of course Sony and Microsoft have "video game people" create their games, it couldn't be any other way. No one needs to be told this, the fact of the matter is, the people making the game are not the people funding the project, that is where Sony and Microsoft often come in, and they have ideas for where they think the project should go. That in itself generally styfles creativity.
It seems it has become to expensive to takes risks anymore; games are less and less original, most being based on existing franchises, all it takes is one look at EA to see the future of gaming. Its all based on existing franchises and the money to own said franchises (NFL anyone?)
The fact that there is still a gaming company with the mantra that the people want originality and creativity is almost a godsend for some of us. Who else but nintendo, and a few other companies (like namco, ah katamari damacy) strives to revolutionize an industry that, whether or not it knows it, bases itself on keeping itself interesting and new: no one wants to play the same game over and over again (although mario party still does not seem to just die, strange).
Nintendo takes risks, always has and probably always will, and for this, I, like many others, beleive that they should be rewarded with better sales than what they receive. This is one reason why the world has so many die-hard nintendo fanboys, which are unlike any other group in the world. Nintendo tries new things, something very few companies are willing to do, the industry needs more of this.
to #17 some basic english grammar classes should help you out. to the topic at hand, ill be surprised if there are actually this many PSPs in the US, itd be nice, but surprising. sony doesnt have a great track record here
Got to see a PSP this past weekend. It was MOST impressive. It has potential to be a gameboy killer for sure. It's also the first media device I would consider.
Hopefully it's greatest effect will be to substantially bring down Memory Stick prices.
I also hope Sony will release inexpensive UMD burners.
everybody critisizes nintendo for being all kiddy or whatever, but where the heck are kids going to get games that appeal to them? so many little kids love video games but don't want to play a lot of the difficult, complicated games that we like.
how the heck is the next generation of gamers going to get into it? and do you really want an 8 year old playing resident evil? (oh..yeah..that's a gamecube game :-)
"What's that birth control pill box looking thing?"
That's the disc that the PSP uses - so all the games & movies will come on a disc that looks like that.
I actually bought two PSPs here in Japan on it's release date (freezing cold, 3 hours, standing in line.) One had some dust or something under the LCD. The other one had a stuck on pixel. I kept the one with the stuck on pixel. So I guess my point is that these type of problems may be fixed now. That's one advantage of a later release.
On the other hand, I really love my PSP. It is a great piece of hardware. I haven't played any games on it for about a month, but I always watch video clips on it while I am riding the train. It's screen clarity and smoothness of play are excellent. Well, I personally think Sony has a winner this time.
So the psp won't get pregnant? Awesome. "ummm, I think I'm pregnant" is the start of some bad times.
But anyway, I would have bought one of these if it came out a few years ago when I was actually into handheld gaming. I might consider it if they come out with grand theft auto, grand turismo and soul caliber (wifi multiplay anyone?). But until then, my $180 or so will be going towards beer.
mmmmm... Beer
Both GTA and Gran Turismo will be released on the PSP.
I think it all comes down to how the device feels in your hands. I’ve played both machines and the PSP wins hands down. In terms of comfort, style and gaming utility (e.g. positions of buttons etc) the PSP is far superior to the DS. Both machines in my view will have, in time, a decent roster of games so for me the PSP is the one to get (although I may still buy the DS as well just for the chance to play Mario Kart wifi!).
#22 makes a pretty good point. The current hardcore gaming fans seem to forget that they were once kids, and that kids like and play video games. The change in content and graphics means that many kids are disenfranchised when it comes to purchasing games, these days.
How many of the PS/2s big games are rated M? How many are rated E? I think you'll find the numbers are inversely related between the PS/2 and Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't necessarily make games for kids...they make games that don't EXCLUDE kids. Big Difference. Mario Sunshine is a damn good platformer, for example...but it can be enjoyed by old and young alike. Mario Kart Double-Dash is a great multiplayer game, regardless of your age. Nintendo has games for an older audience, they just don't focus on them, sometimes to the exclusion of all else.
The announcement that 1 million PSPs will be in the stores is a Good Thing (tm). It means, hopefully, that PSPs will be available for anyone who wants them. I originally was planning on getting one at launch, but Sony's recent announcements make it sound like a sucker's game for early adopters, so I'll wait a while before buying in.
This is news? Its been known for months that would be a million PSPs at launch. They're still sold out at every store that takes pre-orders. Don't expect the situation to improve quickly, either; the US will only receive monthly shipments of 400,000-500,000 units throughout the summer. By the time Sony gets their new manufacturing plant up and running in August, allowing them to crank out 2m units a month, the PSP will launch in Europe.
Bottom line: If you haven't pre-ordered by now, be prepared to 1) wait, 2) pay an exorbinant amount of money on eBay, or 3) be at Wal*Mart at midnight. They don't take pre-orders so you may be able to find one.
