DVB-H going nationwide...maybe

Nokia 7710 DVB-H

This is sort of a straggler from earlier this week, but we got a chance to check out a demo of Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld, or DVB-H, at the Nokia booth at CTIA earlier this week. There was no way to actually watch a live DVB-H broadcast there at the trade show, but Nokia and Crown Castle has been testing DVB-H television broadcasts in Pittsburgh, PA since October of last year, and Crown Castle just announced plans to create a new subsidiary called Crown Castle Mobile Media which is charged with creating a nationwide DVB-H network. They're one of the few companies that actually has the bandwidth to do this (they own chunks of 5MHz spectrum across the country), and if they can pull it off then the carriers might have a competitor for their own 3G-based streaming video plans. Assuming that there even enough people who want to watch TV on their cellphones in the first place, that is.
