Pentax debuts the 645 Digital medium-format camera
Pentax is joining the small-but-growing number of camera-makers who produce
medium-format digitals, with the rollout of their 645
Digital at the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo. The camera boasts a new Kodak CCD that captures a whopping 18.6 megapixels.
No word on pricing yet, but as with other cameras in this class, if you have to ask, you should just forget about it
right now.

Good for Pentax 645 owners who already are in that system. It means those lenses are still good invenestments. Me? I have an EOS 1Ds Mark II, and at 16.7 megapixels, I'll be able to make better photos. Why? Because 35mm lenses have to be sharper than medium format lenses. I think the 1Ds Mark II pretty much makes medium format irrelevant in their current incarnations. Having a much more flexible lens selection makes for a lot more dynamic photos. And while the Canon costs a lot, $8,000 at this point, it's a whale of a lot less than a medium format outfit.
