The Nintendo DS now comes in black and white... in Japan

Not sure exactly why they think they're sticking it to Sony by "strategically" releasing two new colors for the Nintendo DS for the Japanese market on the same day that the PlayStation Portable had its big North American launch (it'd have made more sense to roll them out Stateside, too) but Nintendo made good on their promise and introduced new white and black versions of the DS yesterday.
Ooooh! White to match the earbuds from the Sony PSP!
Lame. Gimme DS-SP.

maybe these will make mario 64 play differently and interesting yet again.
The white one looks very cool. It will go nicely with my Etymoics.

Is this Nintendo's answer to the PSP? No new games, no price break, just a couple of new colors in Asia? How hard is Sony laughing at this.

Compare the sales numbers of the DS and GBA SP combined with the PSP over the last few months and Sony is probably not laughing very hard.
I think the reality is Nintendo doesn't need to be making panic moves. They've still got the GBA SP, which remains the top-selling handheld system, and they've got the DS, which is kind of oddly placed in the market but I guess sort of fits in between the GBA and the PSP. In any case, they still have a large majority of the handheld marketplace. (That could still change over time, but I'm just saying there's no need for rash, desperate moves on Nintendo's part right now.)
i wouldnt call releasing games... or even game dates, could be considered "rash."
i like the black one, but it attracts dust.
the white version is perfect to be added along with Apple products, i.e iMac, iBook, mini mac and the iPod.
Nintendo could've released these versions in the US as well but they didn't. I just want to know what they're thinking about right now and what their plans are. Their silence is kindda scary and promising at the same time!
I guess E3 is less than 2 months away. I can wait.
Nintendo has been releasing multiple colors for awhile (See GBC, GBA, GBA SP, Gamecube) and it's been very successful for them. They likely have more colors in the works for a few months from now and it'll probably come out in the US eventually too. I don't see this as a direct response to PSP at all.
After going through 3 PSPs I'm never buying another Sony product again. One of them, straight from the box, had a huge gash on the screen. Dead pixels on the other two. I waited months for this and now I'm returning the message that Sony is sending all of us, a big "SCREW YOU!" Maybe I'll look at the DS, but right now I'm too upset.

No the answer is the Game Boy Evolution. It is rumored to come out soon, have the same form factor of the GB Advanced and hardware similary powerful to the Game Cube.
The Nintendo DS is not a successor to the Game Boy as Nintento officially stated. The Game Boy line is the competition to the PSP.

You know what happens to powerful gaming systems when they are released with no direct competition...
Look at Dreamcast and how the current generation consoles destroyed it...

Of course this isn't a direct competition to PSP. How could it be, when PSP has been out in Japan for months now. Heck, it's not even in the same country. UNLESS Nintendo is anticipating a large fraction of americans to look at this news and make an import order. No? Then there's no way this was done to "stick it to Sony".
Still looks like ass. WTF was Nintendo thinking when they released such an unappealing design? Straight from Fischer-Price.

P.S. To #14 the "rumored" new gameboy could never have Gamecube graphics as the PSP being as powerful as a PS2 costs $400 to make and a handheld with Gamecube graphics would cost even more, violating Nintendos policy of keeping handhelds affordable.
It is probably a marketing coincidence. I don't think it stole any of PSP's thunder which is cool. It should just give the Nintendo marketing team more push to develop better ways of promoting their product.
Even if... Game Boy Evolution is much more hardware advanced and overall a better peice of hardware as far as battery, screen, form, etc, that doesnt mean they are going to change their gaming taste does it? Because quite frankly, I've had enough of every form of Mario that can be concieved, I'll stick to my PSP with GTA, and Twisted Metal for the most part, thanks.

I was looking to pick up a DS this weekend (PSP will be bought in December after a price drop), but then I read this article and I really want a black one. Does anyone have any info on when these new colors will be released stateside? (importing is not an option)
