NextWeb offering WiMax VoIP service

You know how people have been talking about how you could use WiMax to create a wireless phone network? Yeah, well it's starting to happen, at least sort of. The final certification for a WiMax standard is still a few months off, but a company called NextWeb is teaming up with CommPartner to rollout a wireless VoIP over pre-WiMax network that'll deliver phone service to small- and medium-sized businesses in several cities in Northern California beginning next month. It's not mobile VoIP, since they're using a fixed broadband wireless connection, but once the mobile version of WiMax gets going, it's pretty easy to imagine people using cheap WiMax gear and WiMax-enabled handsets to roll their own citywide wireless VoIP networks. The carriers are going to LOVE that.
