Close up shot of the Xbox 360's controller
The leaked Xbox 360 pics keep on coming this afternoon. The latest is a close up shot of the new console's controller that gives us a good look at that little silvery thing in the middle, which besides sporting the Xbox 360's logo, is also supposed to be some new kind of button or something or other (if we knew exactly what it was we'd tell you).

Questions for those in the know...
Is that a headphone jack in the bottom?
What's with the 4 numerical marks outside that spherical XBALL?
Very interesting...
Utills @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
how is it powered?
plus...what is the range?
since a crap controller could completely wreck all games then i guess they best make sure it doesnt lack precision or doesn't lose power during a game!
EastCoaster @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I guess that answers the question if the headset is wireless or not.
Snooch @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Got mine yesterday. Awesome.
pseudogrey @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
What in the world is that silver button? I love the way it looks but is it some sort of trackball or something? Maybe that's what the numbers are in the corners? Man what a great day to be an internet geek like me....keep the leaks comming lol
joeyjoejo1200 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
The silver thing is OBVIOUSLY the selector for what controller you are, since the controllers are wireless they will need to address themselves, and the jack at the bottom is for charging.
Ry @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
My 2 cents:
The plug at the bottom is probably for the headset, who knows what it will run off of (ie- bluetooth, regular band RF, IR maybe?)
The numbers around the silver "X" logo are possibly to select which controller is which player (read: frequency). Odd it would only have 4 channels though, what with all the RF signals around that could cause interference.
Alex @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
please please be a trackball
rusty @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
i like it in general, but that grey plastic used for the thumbsticks etc looks really tacky.... a rubberised finish would look a lot better.
that button is really interesting what with the numbers printed around it.... can't imagine what it does!
Andy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Could the silver thing be some kind of gyroscope? So that, as an additional way of moving, you can tilt the controller? Maybe the digits round the edge are for calibrating it.
Noddy Jnr @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I figured out what the silver button and the 4 numbers are......If you remember the nintendo wavebird controller has differant frequency numbers so that if there are 4 players it knows which controller is which player.......This will be the same...4 controller ports ...4 numbers.... simple.!!!
pseudogrey @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
The X in that silver ball also looks slightly translucent. Could we have a nice glowing "X" in our hands when we play? That would look cool as hell when playing Xbox at night with eh lights off.
Alex @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#11 - very very intersting idea
Hawk098 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Well that would sure put a frown on Nintendo's face if it was.
Squishy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM

That sounds very reasonable.
I think you might be right.
I'm wondering what type of battery life this thing will have since it's wireless.
darx @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
12, I believe you are right.
Jason @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
The button is for instant "XBOX LIVE" connection. You press it and you are taken to your XBOX LIVE menu.
reddsoda @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Yes, the gyroscope would make driving and flying games very interesting. Seems to be the next logical inclusion into controllers as we have digital, analog, and feedback. Hopefully that's what it actually is...
Pancake @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#18 - I am thinking it is a Live Button of some sorts. Maybe a SUPER button. lol
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#12 and #17, that doesn't really make sense.
Look at the Xbox 360 pic. Notice there are only 2 controller ports?
Alex @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
they are wireless controllers. are you dumb retro?
mattharvest @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I'll tell you what the silver thing is: its just an indicator. That's why the numbers are there: there will be an LED beneath each quarter of the X, so that one of the four slices will be lit to indicate which remote is which.
DanAmpX @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Now that's more like it. I literally threw a fit at the first XBox for not having an input jack for the headset. Have you seen the module? Its TINY and 35 bucks. But I had to get it anyway, thats great that it just has the jack right there, thats what I expected the first time 'round. This is looking good.
I don't know much about wireless controllers, but if you can set what frequency each controller is, couldn't say the first player take over the 2nd player and make him lose or something and then quickly switch back to win... lol.
Spiza @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Here's a question for all you xbox360 fans. Are you going to be happy if you get this xbox that only plays dvds if the ps3 plays the next dvd format? With all the hd crap microsoft has been spouting, their system will be the one that can't play hd movies. What a joke.
js @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
IT IS WIRELESS
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Yeah, but there isn't a built-in reciever inside the xbox. :D
You have to plug in the recievers, and there are only 2 slots.
js @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
no someone who was at the launch party has comfirmed that the reciever is built in and the attennea is at the rear of the console
brian @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
RETRO - the slots you are talking about are for memory cards dipstick :p lol
Taha @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
DanAmpX,
If they have a system for the wireless controller like the Nintendo WaveBird, then if another player switches his frequency to yours, the game will automatically pause and pop up a message telling you to change your frequency back to the original setting.
Rechain @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#21 Look at the Xbox 360 pic. Notice there are only 2 controller ports?
Yea, the to ports on the consoles is to the memory units...
The controller is wireless...

retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Ohhh....
So then how many controllers would it come with?

Just realized that. I really have to look at an image before I post something. :P
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
So, if only one, how would you have multiplayer? ?_?
Sam @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Number 18 is right, this has been confirmed (I don't remember where) in quite a few different media outlets. This silver button will take you directly to your Xbox Live home page.
Rechain @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Lol Retro :D

UPS! 2 post with the same text from me...sorry
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Really, how will you have multiplayer if only one controller is built in and you can't plug in controllers?
brian @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
RETRO, only one controller comes with the console - duh. the wireless receiever on the console will recognize at least up to 4 controllers!!!!!!
NorthDakotaAssociate @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
The silver Xbox logo is a button for the HUD (see J.Allard's GDC presentation). The 4 green numbers surrounding the Xbox logo are for identifying which controller yours is when you have 4 wireless controllers being used at the same time (how else would you know if you're controller is "plugged into" port 1)
Handsome Jon @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Ok, so if we have 8 xBoxs in a room for Lan play.... I wonder how each xbox is going to know which controllers to 'listen to.'
any ideas?
retro#2 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I don't understand.
If it only comes with 1 controller, will I need to buy another console if I want to play a multiplayer game? If I want to play 4-player multiplayer, this means I have to buy 4 xbox consoles (since each includes 1 controller)?
NOT FAIR. MS SUCKS.
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Oh. So it can recognize more than one. Hopefully it won't take to long to find the signal and connect to the Xbox. :|
brian @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Handsome jon (43) i'm sure microsoft has already thought about this

retro #2 - consoles have always came with 1 controller. you just need to get more controllers. you dont need 4 xboxs for 4 people to play. jeez
