Moz: Bigmouth Strikes Again strikes again with the iPod
We're pretty sure there's nary a person 'round Engadget HQ who hasn't
had a long, tempestuous, withdrawn Smiths and/or Morrissey phase—and if ever there was a person you couldn't accuse of
being irrelevant, it was the man who put the "M" in the Manchester music scene. Which is why it should come as no
surprise that he's apparently changed his lyrics from the 1986 track "Bigmouth Strikes Again" from "And her walkman
started to melt." to, you guessed it, "And her iPod started to melt." on his Live at Earls Court album. Um, that's all,
you may all go on
obsessing and tattooing his face on your chest with your day.
P.S. - How long do you think before they redub that Joy Division song with "satellite radio, live transmission/Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the satellite radio"?
[Thanks, Robyn]

should joy division, nay, new order change those lyrics in performance, ian curtis will surely spin in his grave yet again.
tr @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
nice to see mozzer switching it up again. i mean, he has a history of concert lyric changes. anyone remember the additional verse in the brixton academy performance of "some girls are bigger than others"? oops...kinda outed myself as a smiths aficianado, haven't i? ;)
and R.I.P ian curtis. i believe a week from tomorrow will be the anniversary of his death.

All the streets are crammed with things
Eager to be held
I know what hands are for
And I'd like to help myself
You ask me the time
But I sense something more
And I would like to give
What I think you're asking for
You handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil

Ballmer and Gates are on your side
But you lose because Steve Jobs is on mine.
?
Sure. Why not.

When Placebo covered Bigmouth Strikes Again (it was a B-side on Nancy Boy) they updated the lyrics, to "Discman" and "Megadrive". First instance makes sense, but I dunno why they replaced 'hearing aid' (in the original) with Megadrive...

#6, A bit of trivia..."Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video ever shown on MTV.
Oh, and Morrissey rules...

Manicured Noise put the "M" in Manchester.
sorry.

Too bad you can't actually download the original on iTunes. Does anyone know why the Smiths catalog is still not available?
narco @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Placebo has the worst cover songs ever. Including this Smiths song, they also did really bad covers of Depeche mode and Kate Bush.
And the Smiths were great, but Morrissey's solo stuff is just alright. Most of it sounds like a Smiths cover-band to me -- you know, it's just not RIGHT. Viva Hate was good, though. I used to hate Moz cos I thought he was a pompous a**hole, but then when i figured out it was all an act, it was highly amusing.
Also, if you want to hear a band that sounds a lot like Morrissey, check out the song "You should all be murdered" by the band "Another Sunny Day."

He started swapping out the lyric for "ipod" well over a year ago - get with it

HAPPY MONDAYS put the "M" in MADCHESTER.
And yes, I said MADchester.
Morrissey? Who the hell is he? The poster child for post-manic-stress-chaos-I want my mummy-I'm so depressed I can't make sense of anything-I wish the world would go away-disorder-disorder?
I hope you all go jump of a bridge.........
The rest of us are happy with our rEal Madchester scene...... gimme more E and Charlie........

Satellite Radio? Yeah, right, and Crispy Ambulance are going to be No. 1 in the charts.
M in Manchester, good lord, the thought of it.

Even in that picture from the 1980's, good old Moz is wearing the white headphones. The man is most definitely 20 years ahead of his time.
Ryan Block @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Art,
Don't know if that was sarcastic, but I photoshopped iPod headphones from the ads, and drew in the cords.
Best,
Ryan
Gil @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Morrissey put the M in iPod. Wait.. I mean You're The One For Me Fatty. Oh wait, that doesn't make sense either.
Gil @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
It would be more impressive to photoshop Morrissey into a set of oddly floating ipod headphones.
RobotDan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Erm... How about Joy Division's hit "She's lost the remote control?"
Tom @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
When Placebo covered Bigmouth Strikes Again, they changed the line to "Her Discman started to melt".

narco, you're totally calling out ryan with your another sunny day reference. he's got mad field mice flexis.
narco @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Awesome. Honestly, who in their right mind DOESN'T have everything the Field Mice released, let alone the entire Sarah Records catalog.

Ryan Block @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
I don't have the WHOLE Sarah catalog because collecting became too expensive, though I did once manage to get a 45 record Sarah lot on eBay for the tune of something like $350. I wouldn't be surprised if Mike does have the whole collection, however, including Sarah 1 (aka Pristine Christine) + all the zines. Mike can we play Saropoly? I still can't believe I paid $40 for Burning World.
Best,
Ryan
mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
i totally may still have a second copy of saropoly lurking around. narco have you checked out the long blondes (see http://www.longblondes.co.uk)? they're more dolly mixture then sarah. also, ryan if you got the golden dawn 7"s then you're set. and if you broke the blueboy ones. and btw, when it comes to the sea urchins, cling film is my jam.
narco @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
I have not checked out the long blondes, but I dig Dolly Mixture. I got into them during my Damned obsession (weren't they all their girlfriends or something? What self-respecting girl would actually go for someone like Captain Sensible???). I wouldn't mind finding a copy of the George Hamilton's Dead single -- that's right up there on my must-have list next to the Meat Whiplash 7" on Creation. Ahhh... if the world were free from bills and tech, then my record collection would have tripled by now.

odd i was just e-mailing someone about how great the meat whiplash single is... and yeah, one of the dolly's is married to captain sensible.
