Nintendo Revolution: more to come?
Who are we to let wildy unsubstantiated rumours fly without passing them on to all you eager gamers out there? The
latest and greatest in speculation is that Nintendo isn't quite finished talking up its
Revolution console yet. The
NintendoOn video was a proven fake, yes — but was it also marketing ploy? And what is up with all this right/left brain
mumbo jumbo? Did Nintendo make a feint with the video, planning to hit us up with something crazy later this week? The
truth is out there, people, but for now we've got only questions. Talk amongst yourselves.

the fake is so obvious, that's ridiculous.

I was thinking about this last night (that's what I do in my spare time, think about game consoles), and the conspiracy theorist inside me was thinking some of the same things hinted at up top. I will say that if it turns out the "On" system is basically real, I will hereby pledge to immediately recall any and all of the negative ions I've been throwing Nintendo's way this week. (Ok, ya got me; that should be positive ions, but "negative" just sounds so much more... negative.)
I will also say that this would be one of the coolest stealth marketing campaigns ever, short as it's been. I still maintain that one person could not have made that video, and especially not without Nintendo's help.
Anything short of that, though, and my disappointment will remain steadfast. They're the ones who have been hyping how revolutionary this system's gonna be (that's it's freakin' *name*, for god's sake), they'd better deliver. And no, playing a bunch of old games doesn't count as "revolutionary".
Christian Gloddy @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Of course there's more to come. They haven't even shown us the controller yet.
seb @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I wish this would be true. A wonderful marketing step, but i somehow doubt that nintendo is this kinda cool..: (
Still hoping to be wrong.. Revoluschaaaaan
btmnky @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
That video *does* look too well-done to be the work of just one artist....
I'm holding out for something that we don't even know about coming out....they managed to keep the new GBmicro a secret, so why not something bigger?
Chris @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I just had a thought... If it's true that the Revolution won't have high definition, then maybe the reason is because it won't be using a TV at all... Maybe they really will have some kind of VR headset.
OMG.... remember the stories about Nintendo licensing some kind of gyroscopic technology? This can't be real, can it?!? That video WAS fake, right??
Justin @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Obviously the conroller will be very different, otherwise they would have shown it along with the console.
renamc @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
geez. You don't do this to Mr. Ballmer, do you? engadget.
Portach King @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Wonderful. I was disapointed to by the lack of new information Nintendo provided in regards to the Revolution, however it was still very exciting. I can't wait to hear more and I pray that this isn't rumour.
Acastro @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I hope that an HMD be the REVOLUTION
Jay MacLean @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Quite clearly fake, her hand can't support the entire "console", especially at the angle of her wrist.
MooMix @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
As cool as it seems I for one hope Nintendo does NOT do something like this. I just can't see it being cool for all that long.
Besides, what is the point of going through all that trouble trying to save space (super small sized revolution) and then having this HUGE + UGLY head set holder thing for the VR glasses?!?!
Also isn't there a lot of speculation that the Revolution will only be a few times faster than the Gamecube? Is a single 2.5 GHZ chip really fast enough to make something like this really work well? Perhaps, but I'd say this is either fake or the Rev will be several times faster than we think it is. (or just have a really kick ass video card?)
Mark @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I'm beginning to wonder if a VR goggles interface for the Revolution could be real.
If you think about it, the technology is here today and could be pulled off affordably. Imagine a Metroid game where in certain levels/rooms, you put on the goggles and do a walk-through. Otherwise, you play most of the game while looking at your standard TV set/video monitor.
This bonus interactivity would require that you have, say, 6X6' of cleared floorspace. The Revolution console beams signals to the goggles wirelessly, and receives feedback from the goggles to determine your distance relative to the virtual space as seen in the goggles.
The images are seen in 3D through the goggles.
I'm not saying that an entire game would use this interface (at least not initially in the Revolution's lifespan in the market). I'm saying that some games could have this VR interactive element put in for certain levels or points in a game (like the Metroid example I just described).
MooMix @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
That is so obviously fake looking.
madhobo @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I doubt that there is more to come from Nintendo. They got blown away in this round from what I can see, and I used to be a Nintendo fanboy for a full decade. As awful as it sounds I kind of wish they would pull a Sega and make games for the other systems - oh man, Nintendo games on other systems. That would be fantastic.
Anyways, I really doubt Nintendo made the video. Here's a thought for all of you conspiracy theorists: Who says the conspiracy has to be at Nintendo? If you think the video is "too professional" for an independant artist, why does it have to be Nintendo who did it? Ever heard of corporate sabotage? Perhaps Sony put it out as it got everyone all hyped up and expecting the world from Nintendo, and then Nintendo comes in with an under-performing, not all that interesting system when people were expecting stuff from three generations ahead. It'd be brilliant. Microsoft IS known for their aggressive business tactics...
Joey Crack @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I never saw the video. Even though it's reportedly fake, I'd like to see it. Any links?

13: two things. one, that *she* is actually a he. *the* he. shigeru miyamoto creator of mario, zelda, and donkey kong.
second of all, while im not saying this is real (the hair around the HMC doesn't quite look right), if the console/base station were hollow underneath, it could be possible for someone to hold it like that.
the real big thing tho is this: in the videos we see one controller docked to the console when not in use. how would you ever stack multiple controllers on it?
Ryan Meyers @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Hmm, what is the use for the revolution if the headset already takes in DVD's. As I remember from the video of this, a DVD went into the top of the helmet. What is the use of the revolution then?
Portach King @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Just to address everyone above complaining that the photo is fake. Of course it is, it was hardly anything to do with the piece written and makes no claim to be real at all. It's a joke image made for the piece basically asking "Have Nintendo been keeping something from us?"
Jay @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Yes I definentaly agree the Nintendo ON video looks way too good for any one or even any amatuer group of people to create, I think this was a stunt pulled by Nintendo. I, like many Nintendo fans was disapointed to see that Nintendo didn't bring a functional console to E3, and also that there didn't appear to do anything revolutionary, I'm hoping that they will pop out of nowhere tommorow with a functional console and the most amazing User Input devices ever, I don't want to call them controllers I think they will be much more than that. I'm hoping....

leojsoap @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I can't say I'd want to play games like that, after seeing the video, and I say the video is a fake, or a really crappy intro
in the race I think xbox will pull a dreamcast, without the stopping of hardware, M$ will just throw more money at it and hope the next gen will take off, PS3 is pretty good, but in the end, a graphics upgrade, with a likely hefty pricetag (think PSP) Nintendo might end up underpowered(keyword: might) but with a new take on controllers, having that could put them ahead of the normal controller consoles
Portach King @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
"I'm hoping that they will pop out of nowhere tommorow ..."
Don't get your hopes up. I mean, as I said I'm really praying for something like this too, but, Nintendo is as predicable as clockwork when it comes to annnouncements and I wouldn't be expecting anything else new to be revealed at all this week as regards to Revolution.
SlickRick @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
NO ONE has *PROVEN* that the video is fake. All I read is IGN "it's fake" and Engadget, "yes, it's fake" but NOBODY says WHY. This video needs to be explained. What gives? Even if the video is not the actual next console, I think it was made by Nintendo, or some other corporation with some money to throw at it. It's just too well conceived and produced to be a fake.
noname989 @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Can anyone point me to the fake video? The Googles they do nothing!
Will Millar @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
You guys are forgetting - in the Nintendo ON movie, a DVD goes into the helmet and reads it. The official revolution console has a DVD slot and there are pictures of DVDs going into it.
nothanks @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Check out the video 4:40 into it. It shows two devices hooking up to the headset -- the Gamecube and a slim box with a question mark on it, which looks very familiar to the console revealed at E3.
Of course, at 4:35 into the video we see the headset hooking up to a monitor and... is that a microwave? Oh, a TV.
Anyway, if Nintendo ends up "punking us" (as Aries said), then hell yes. I think the video screams fake at the end when that shitty Mario comes out, but the spot-on texturing and camera work of the N64 castle? Awesome.

"I just had a thought... If it's true that the Revolution won't have high definition, then maybe the reason is because it won't be using a TV at all..."
It will have high definition. Don't you remember some of the first revolution articles on IGN stating so? They said it'd support high definition AND the ability to plug straight into a computer monitor.
David @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Those of you that are pessimistic about Nintendo coming up with a surprise for everyone... including mr. 'female wrist expert'... there's nothing predictable about A revolution! The video is ridiculously accurate and would have taken at least a month of hard work to have so perfect... and now Mr. Mario pops out with one on his head... hello?? How is a corporation going to fake out its customers before releasing their product? You think they're planning on using reverse psychology by getting you pissed at them so you can go purchase their system? Think about it, there's something they're keeping from everyone, this is not a time to say that Nintendo is your best friend that you knew all your life so you know how he thinks!
Eric @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Okay enough about the fake pic of Miyamoto holding the Nintendo On, it's SUPPOSED to be fake guys. Someone did it here as a joke. It has no bearing on whether the Nintendo On is real or not, its just a crappy picture made on purpose.
That question mark box had me thinking too, and the brain comment, and the monitor hook-up and the absolutely crappy Nintendo conference. All us videogame fans must HOPE its all a big lie. Oh and the fact that Gamespot and IGN and all these sites don't have dedicated sites to the Nintendo Revolution but they have them for Xbox 360 AND Playstation 3 for the last few weeks....makes ya think...
Portach King @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
The photo is not real. It's not meant to look real. It is a joke. I've said all this before. Guys, it's just a doctored photo to accompany the headline

w0rstnitmr @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
There very well might be more to come.
The video was released before E3 and Ninty's conference. Throughought the conference, Reggie and Satoru made references THAT MATCHED THE VIDEO.
I.E. Right-side of brain, 512, etc.
Plus the conference seemed somewhat lighthearted: as if they knew something the rest of us didn't. AND take a look at IGN. Normally during E3 they'd be buzzing with info. But they're not. Maybe they're partners.
Now, before you completely throw this info away. Do me a favor. Point your browswers to:

I'm afraid that the VR headset would be just too costly for those who enjoy player multiplayer with friends in one room. It doesn't seem feasable and co=ordinating with nintendo's gaming for everyone policy... VR sets are a no go I'd suspect
