Motorola i930 coming to Nextel soon, very soon?
We've been hearing about the Motorola i930, Nextel's way overdue Windows Mobile-powered smartphone, for literally years now, and it looks like we might finally be getting close to a release. Nah, Nextel hasn't confirmed anything like a date or a price (unlike last May, when they seemed pretty sure it'd be out before the end of the year), but the phone did just score that oh-so-necessary FCC approval, something which usually (but not always) means a release is around the corner. In the meantime we can all just grumble about how this phone is probably going to be instantly out of date as soon as it hits retail.

Does anyone even use Nextel anymore, other than construction workers, or truckers?
Just curious...
Brandon @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
I use Nextel. I will be working for my fathers trucking company in Dallas beginning June 1st and almost all 40 drivers and my family have Nextel phones. It will be very convienent to be on the cheapest plan and just walkie talkie all day. I'd say Nextel has the smallest percentage of "normal" users though.
Awesom-o @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
I realize you're being a little sarcastic, but many people use Nextel in the business arena. My friend works in an architecture firm, and their whole company uses Nextel and LOVES it. They use Blackberries, and they use the "Push To Talk" all the time.
I'd use Nextel also, but either their phones suck, or if they're cool, like the Blackberries, they're too damn expensive for the Data fee.
BigDog @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
Construction workers and truckers. Also the FBI, DEA, Secret Service, Homeland Security and many of the largest municipal law enforcement agencies across the country. When cell phones fail in a crisis, Nextel ensures law enforcement and public safety can communicate.
TheZodiac @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
not to mention some of the more advanced features of the phone will suck the innevitable shnak due to t he shittyness of iDen bandwidth contraints.
Done.

Yea #4, like how those Nextel devices FAILED the NYC Fire and Police Departments on 911!?
jamal @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
i dont see why all you people have a deep seeded hatered for nextel. if people want it then damn let them have it. i have the i860, and all i can say is that its leapes and bounds above the sprint shit i had to put up with for a year. i think that they are really flexible in what you can do with them, and even if the features are a bit outdated, the phones are produced mainly for big buisness, so dont complain about the camera sucking or whatever, most buisnesses dont allow camera phones of any type anyway. And also as a customer, i would have wished that they merged with something a lil more respectable than sprint, but its not that big of a deal. All i can say is that im happy the 930 is finally comming out, and maybe itll be the push nextel needed?

I have noticed alot of slamming of Nextel on these boards before, and taking into consideration Nextel's past history that is not surprising. However, this year has shown the world that Nextel is recommitting themselves to the regular consumer market by releasing 4 new phones with the features needed to get regular joe's interested. Considering that Nextel uses the iDEN infrastructure and therefore can only sell handsets made by one manufactuer says alot about how difficult it must be to have a supplier with a tight monopoly on Nextel's needed hardware. Yes, I know that iDEN phone's still lack all the features of the competition but the 3 new phones and this new i930 show that Nextel's making a huge effort. Come on lets face facts most of those gee-whiz features that other companies offer usually work as well as a Pinto after a car wreck. Have you ever tried the radio on Verizons system, it's horrible. Nextel started with that simple innovative radio feature that works easily and has a great quality of service and now that Sprints with them I think we will see great strides in Nextel's Data speeds. So lets chill with the Nextel bashing and see what they do next!
P.S. Commentor #7 check your facts! During 9/11 Nextel was not the only provider that had a service blackout going and since 9/11 Nextel has implemented a new service that allows government handsets top priority on the Nextel network so no more blackouts. Also, NYC police and firemen were also using Motorola's regular 2way radio's and they failed also because of the massive amount of debris floating in the air no radio signals would be able to penetrate a cloud of such materials cover so large an area no matter who made them.

Trust me #9 I know what I am taking about because I was in the middle of the whole thing from a telecom engineering perspective. The problem is Nextels over promise of its network/service capabilities to agencies that try to rely on it in extreme emergences (Fire, Police, etc). Yes all mobile operators had issues on 9-11 but the very service that these agencies relied on was the slowest to respond. Slowest with the Cows and Picos. Slowest to bring the experts that really knew the network. On that day, others lead and Nextel followed. Far behind. Facts you say? How about a front row seat. Can you say the same? I think not!
sk @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
External Pictures and Internal Pictures of i930 were kept temporarily (until 7/03/2005) unaivailable at FCC site. So hope the phone will be releasing around that time.
charlie @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
I wish you people would stop bitching if you like nextel like i do then great if not to bad if you dont like nextel write a letter or send a email or better yet go to them and tell them in person! Have a great day!
Marcus @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
The only feature that I like about nextel is the walkie talkie. Besides that I have horrible service and have to pay for every feature that would come standard on any other phone service. You have to pay for ringtones and wallpapers while other service providers allow you to get them free. Nextel needs to cater to the average user not just the businessman. Nextel has one camera phone that I know of and i930 has been on hold for what seems like forever. Other phone services have tons of camera phones among many other features. Nextel needs to give more for their customers dollar.
Royal @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
I dont like all the hate on nextel all my people have them and we all get great reception. plus we have the best media system with the java apps, and i have the application loader for my computer so whhile my boys have to cancel their plans when they lose their phones and search for signals in their base ment. i am chilling with my nextel chirpin people just for the fun of it
Marcus Wyatt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
Hey guys, i work for Nextel. The 930 is not coming out!!!! Sorry. Nextel is not coming out with it because of the merge with Sprint!!! Sorry.
Justin @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM

TRUE @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
if you dont like them dont use them who cares Ive seen cingular they suck my friend has them and dont even dare say tmobile is better only verizons the best i seen a video nextels walkie talkie vs the others horrible ,yeah you can say there expensive but you got to take into concideration that theres free incomming so what is a 1000 mins without free incomming when your a worker? NOTHING,people get t-moblie cingular cause there broke and cheap, and My friends on the 100 min plan with cingular and his bills like a $120 a month cause theres no free incomming.
joeblownextelrep @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
# 7, the only phones that even remotly worked during 9-11 at ground zero were nextel phones. That is a LARGE reason why LARGE government agencies, and LARGE corporations use them. As far as service goes, one thing to say to all the people who have problems with nextel, Nextel is on an independent network, not connected to OTHER companies, yes this does mean less coverage area, HOWERVER, THIS ALSO MEANS NO ROAMING CHARGES!! can anyone say the same about any of the other companies?? just use your t-mobile, sprint or other phone and ROAM over to another providers tower!! enough said on that.
Treat you phone well and it works better. I get calls every day from customers who dont turn their phones off, and they get errors. all phones connect to a network if there is service on the phone(and try to connect if there is not), the information in the phone needs to be refreshed from time to time, POWERCYCLING REFRESHES YOUR PHONE.
Coverage is limited with nextel, yes nextel is a big cellular provider, however, understand that being one company on an iden network makes it alot harder to cover all areas, as opposed to 7 - 10 companies on the gsm network!! (back to the no roaming)
Nextel provids some of the most versitile plans available from any cell company. from our free incoming to direct connect only plans. we range with many different plans, if you have a problem with your plan PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND DIAL 611(nextel customer care). We the nextel care agents will gladly change your plan to something that better suits your needs. And if price is the problem, what is worse paying an extra 20$ a month for 800 free incoming minutes over the 500 free incomin minutes, or paying 260$ in overages, doesnt take a genius to get the picture.
SERVICE ISSUES?? well again 611 from your phone, we have a trouble shooting guide that has the solution to 90% of the problems you could ever have. 10% would require a transfer to the tech department to have a network ticket issued. IF this is the case be thankful that we are willing to do our best to get the job done properly, and done RIGHT, as quickly as possible. We understand its an inconvienience, yes, BUT also be aware that NO cell company let alone nextel can go without issues. Nextel has some of the best customer care, for any company, and the goal of the company is to have a wait no longer the 2 MINUTES, yes ITS A GOAL, that doesnt mean that your going to get service as fast as that. BE PATIENT, THE CALMER YOU ARE WITH US THE MORE WILLING WE ARE TO HELP!! this is true with anything in life. would you go to your doctor, and scream at him because u were waiting 45 minutes in his office.(not bloody likely, because u would be out a doctor).
sure we are not doctors, but alot of reps that you speak with are well educated. I know atleast 15 reps in the center i work in, who have college diplomas, or are university students. Treat us line humans, and we will get the job done, and alot of times are willing to do more then just get the basic job done!
the i930 (to kinda stay on topic) may be due to come out, however as a rep we have not recieved any info on it yet, but this is not a new thing, however, we usually get info on phones a few months before they come out(2-3 months) for some things, and we get weekly updates from nextel.
ALSO note for anyone who has a problem with my post, I am not saying nextel is the best choice, hell for some it COULD be the worst choice, this is all dependent on individual needs. and dont think that i agree with every thing nextel does,or that i am trying to sell the product, this is not the case,(besides i get nothing for selling nextel except another person calling in to find out how to download a ringtone perhaps. (job security)) however a little education is good to have, on how the company works befor you make up your mind that they are the worst company around.
PS. if there are any questions about nextel or how to do something feel free to ask away, and i can do my best to answer. or better yet call customer care at 611 from your nextel phone or 1-800-639-6111(now that is a job security plug)
MaJoRCoke @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
Well nextel is primarily a business phone. My whole company and every client we work with has one. Also i am from new york city, 80% of people around this area that i ever would communicate with have a nextel. Push to talk is the wave of the future....
Also i dont know about the walkie talkie working at ground zero. I was in the city when the sand nigs hit us and nextel was down too. I not sure if it was down right by ground zero tho.

All I have to say is...My phone was the only one working during Hurricane Katrina, while other companies like t-mobile, sprint, and verizon were nothing more than paperweights.

#7 As a firefighter that was there that day, I can personally vouch for nextel and tell you WE WERENT USING NEXTEL. WE WERE USING OUR STANDARD 800mhz RADIOS. So before you go being an idiot and invoking that day in a rant about nextel I'd check your sources if I were you.
Sean @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
People talking about Nextel because they cannot get Nextel. If your credit was good you know you would have it. Also if you knew what you were talking about you can do your own ringtones for free without downloading anything. Nextel allows you to create your own ringtones and wallpapers. Look at the other companies "walkie talkie" all of them bout Nextel has delays who wants a walkie talkie with delays in it. People complaining about the i930 not having bluetooth but half of you don't have anything else bluetooth and another quarter doesn't know how to you it anyway. Now I will say one thing bad about Nextel and it is not them it is Motorola there phones are not that well put together. As the new ones come out they are getting better but the i95 and down was some of the worst phones ever made. The i860 is a great phone so the i930 can only get better.
