Toyota promises helper bots by 2010
Toyota already has a humanoid bot of its own that's capable of wrassling with both Sony's QRIO or Honda's Asimo, but now the company is promising to have a line of helper robots that can serve tea or take care of the elderly available within the next five years.

Will people never learn? Hasn't everybody learned from Terminator, The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Westworld (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000707044824/), etc. that helper monkeys/robots eventually turn on their masters?

It reminds me of a Cyberman. (Doctor Who fans will get it).

Not too long ago Toyota revealed a robot that is capable of playing simple melodies on trumpet. I don't know the particulars of how it does this. Being a brass musician myself I'm not exactly thrilled that now even something that takes me years to learn, and master will soon be capable for a robot to play. Still I doubt we'll be seeing them play with the London Symphony Orchestra anytime soon.

have fun on the robot reservation, suckers!

I too would like to welcome our new robot overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a noted TV personality, I could be useful in rounding up others to toil away in their underground sugar caves (sorry ChronoZaga, I had to complete the line, despite the complete irrelevance of sugar caves to robots)

Just FYI guys, the robot holding trumpet is currently being shown in Toyota pavillion in Aichi Expo. Believe it or not, the robot has a diaphragm, so it is really playing music, not just pretending.
hesh @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
p.s. where's my robotic real doll
NoBullet @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
Playing an instrument and creating new original music are two different things. I dont think robots have gotten that far yet.
strider_mt2k @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
No need to pretend when you're packing your own diaphragm!
ebrake @ Dec 19th 2005 12:16AM
helping the elderly my ass.. that robot's sleeping with me!
